Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: New Mission, A Little Girl Seeking Help Late at Night

However, she quickly concealed her emotions and glanced at Jasper Thorne.

She slowly walked over.

"Grandpa Thorne, are you all right now?"

Jasper Thorne's face lit up the moment he saw Jane Sterling.

"I'm fine, Grandpa's fine now. I really have you to thank for this."

Jane looked a little hesitant. She didn't want anyone else to know about the Soul Revival Talisman.

Seeing Jane Sterling hesitate, Jasper Thorne, being a sharp old man, quickly nodded and gave her an understanding look.

"Don't worry. Grandpa won't tell anyone. This will be our little secret."

Hearing this, Jane Sterling finally relaxed and broke into a grin.

"Thank you, Grandpa. When you're discharged, I'll treat you to some barbecue."

Seeing Jane Sterling's adorable expression, Jasper Thorne clutched his stomach, wanting to laugh out loud, but he nearly pulled at his wound. He grimaced and frowned.

Drew Thorne quickly stepped forward. "Grandpa, you haven't recovered yet. Don't move around."

"I'm fine... Little girl, this grandson of mine is very rich. You can fill in whatever amount you want on that check."

Jane Sterling was now completely at ease. 'In that case, I won't hold back.'

She picked up the check and thought for a moment. 'I probably shouldn't be too greedy.'

'After all, I did this good deed voluntarily.'

So, she wrote "10,000" on the check.

After writing it, she coolly tore the check from the book and turned to hand it to Drew Thorne.

"This much will do."

Drew Thorne looked at the number on the check, then looked back at Jane Sterling in disbelief, his expression complicated.

"Are you sure this is all you want?"

Jane Sterling nodded. "Yes. Is something wrong?"

'I have to move out of my family's house, and I already have a place to stay now.'

'But that courier station has no furniture besides the shelves.'

'I have to buy some furniture for myself, and the ten thousand can be my pocket money for the next three months.'

'Once the three months are up and I'm back at school, I can find another part-time job to support myself.'

Jane Sterling was not a greedy person; she knew better.

Looking at Jane Sterling's clear and composed expression, Drew Thorne was momentarily stunned.

By the time he came to his senses, Jane Sterling had already said her goodbyes to Jasper Thorne, slung her small bag over her shoulder, and walked right out of the hospital room.

Jane Sterling reached the hospital entrance and was about to hail a cab to go back to the courier station.

Just then, Drew Thorne came running up from behind her.

"What is it? Is there something else?"

Drew Thorne paused. If his grandfather hadn't told him to get the young woman's phone number right after waking up, he wouldn't have chased her all the way down from the 34th floor.

'This girl isn't tall, but she sure walks fast.'

"Um... can I get your phone number?"

Jane Sterling froze for a second.

"Our transaction is over. Why do you need my number?"

Drew Thorne frowned.

"In any case, you saved my grandfather. Ten thousand can't possibly express our gratitude. He really likes you and said that once he's better, he wants to personally treat you to a meal."

Jane Sterling had a sudden realization. 'Oh, so that's why.'

She knew she had the kind of look that older people found endearing, so she took out her phone, and they exchanged numbers.

Drew Thorne noticed a large crack on Jane Sterling's phone.

It had been cracked when she dropped it during her argument with Charles Sterling in the hospital room.

After discreetly saving the number, he watched Jane Sterling get into a taxi.

Drew Thorne stood there, looking down in thought for a moment. Then, he took out his phone and made a call.

"Assistant Wyatt, buy the latest model phone and have it sent to the hospital room."

Meanwhile, Jane Sterling received a ten-thousand transfer on her phone.

She saw the transfer on her phone and was instantly overjoyed.

'Wow, the ten thousand arrived so quickly! This is great!'

Gleefully, Jane Sterling got out of the taxi near Aethelgard University and went to a nearby food stall to get some takeout.

Afterward, she returned to the courier station. It had been tidied up a bit and no longer looked as desolate as it had during the day.

The small path in front had been cleared.

While she was at the hospital that afternoon, Jane Sterling had found a moment to buy a small bed.

The bed had now been delivered to the entrance. However, the courier station was invisible to outsiders.

So, Jane Sterling had to bring a dolly out from inside the station and, huffing and puffing, push the bed, which weighed over a hundred pounds, into the loft.

Utterly exhausted, Jane Sterling washed up quickly and collapsed onto the bed.

Drained by the mental and physical stress of the past two days, Jane Sterling was completely worn out and fell asleep before long.

In the middle of the night, while Jane Sterling was sleeping soundly, she suddenly felt the air around her drop by several degrees.

In the sweltering summer heat, this could be considered quite refreshing.

She let out an unconscious sigh and was about to turn over to go back to sleep.

But then, she suddenly remembered—this strange feeling was somewhat familiar.

She jolted awake, a shiver running through her body.

'This icy feeling... There's no air conditioning here. Could it be the presence of something... not human?'

This gave Jane Sterling a very bad feeling. She clutched the thin summer quilt, not daring to turn around.

'It's the middle of the night. I'm afraid that if I turn around and see something gory, I'll be scared to death on the spot.'

[DING—]

[You have received a new task]

[Please deliver the item on the table outside the courier station to Villa 369 in Aethelgard.]

[Task Reward: 2,000,000 M Coins + 10,000 cash]

The task notification rang out in Jane Sterling's mind at that precise moment, and she was suddenly overcome with excitement.

'This pays way more than the last task!'

'The task must be a bit harder, too.'

The thrill of earning money washed away her fear.

Jane Sterling thought to herself that whatever had come to the courier station wasn't a ghost—it was her personal cash cow.

She threw off the quilt and got right out of bed.

The courier station was vast and empty in the darkness, which was still a little terrifying.

Jane Sterling mustered her courage, turned on all the lights, stood in the middle of the courier station, and shouted at the top of her lungs.

"Whoever commissioned this task, come on out! Stop playing spooky games!"

Jane Sterling felt she was being braver than she had ever been in her life.

'I don't want to share a space with a ghost. Otherwise, I'll be scared every time I need to use the bathroom at night.'

After she finished speaking, Jane Sterling scanned the area around her.

Sure enough, a rather cute-looking girl walked out from behind one of the shelves.

The girl froze when she saw her, too.

"How can it be a girl my age? Is she even reliable?"

The girl muttered to herself. Jane Sterling sized her up and scoffed when she heard her words.

"*I'm* not reliable? And I suppose a ghost like you is?"

Initially, she'd had a pretty good impression of the cute-looking girl in front of her.

She hadn't expected the girl to open her mouth and say something like that. Wasn't this a direct challenge to her abilities?

Hmph.
