Jiang Zishi's head spun, his eyes red with agitation. He confirmed, word by word,
"Chi Yun'er, are you saying that since arriving here, you've reported every cent and every ration ticket you've spent to your parents, without missing a thing?"
Chi Yun'er nodded obediently, fidgeting with her index fingers in a helpless and bashful manner. "I have to report not only my reasons for spending the money and ration tickets, but also the things they mail back to me."
"If I don't write to them, they'll assume I still have money and ration tickets, so their monthly package won't be on time. They'll also send less money and fewer tickets and things."
She then added with a look of feigned cleverness,
"But I'm pretty smart, you know. I spend every last bit of the money and ration tickets my parents mail me each month!"
Jiang Zishi continued to ask through gritted teeth, "So, in the letters you wrote, did you mention my name?"
