A city is like a giant machine. Some parts never sleep, always roaring with revelry.
But other parts do fall asleep as the night deepens. The areas around hospitals are usually like that. As long as there aren't any commercial districts nearby, they generally quiet down after midnight.
Xin Huohuo was standing on the rooftop, her legs starting to go stiff, when she finally saw a furtive black shadow appear outside the hospital's back door.
Ordinarily, a normal human wouldn't be able to see such things. But she'd been hanging around Black and White Impermanence for too long. Even without developing a Yin Yang Eye, she had become exceptionally sensitive to ghosts and other supernatural beings. Plus, with them constantly drawing on her eyelids, she could now see everything she was and wasn't supposed to.
The black shadow was small and thin, with an ordinary face, a true reflection of his appearance in life... Ma Kai! It was him, no doubt about it!
