Lucy Summers's hands, hanging at her sides, clenched into tight fists. Her heart hammered against her ribs, threatening to leap from her throat.
The more than ten years of familial affection she had known suddenly seemed like a complete joke.
Lucy Summers pursed her lips, her gaze on Mrs. Summers turning sharp. "If I give you a hundred thousand, you'll agree to disown me? We cut all ties and go our separate ways?"
Mrs. Summers nodded almost without hesitation. "Yes. Consider it payment for all the hard work we put into raising you over the years."
A sudden chill washed over Lucy Summers.
'This is for the best,' she comforted herself. 'Now I can leave without any guilt.'
"Alright." Lucy Summers nodded. "I'll figure out a way to get you the hundred thousand."
"When will you have it?" Mrs. Summers pressed, her voice filled with excitement. "We need it urgently."
