Liam Linden searched for an hour. From the village entrance to its very end, he looked high and low, but there was no sign of Faye Vaughn.
The sky grew dark. At the base of a wall, an old yellow dog let out a few lazy barks.
Faye Vaughn, tired of hiding, squatted down. She stroked the old yellow dog's head and whispered, "Shh, don't bark."
As if it understood her, the old yellow dog actually fell silent.
Faye Vaughn muttered to it, "I have no choice. He has to get worried, or he'll never realize how serious this is."
The old yellow dog lifted its head to glance at her before slowly lying back down again.
Faye Vaughn grew bored of hiding. It was getting a little cold as night fell, so she decided she might as well go back inside.
She had just gotten back to her room when she heard the old yellow dog from next door start barking frantically, its yelps sounding pained and desperate.
