"That smells amazing..." Faye Vaughn rubbed her nose and mumbled quietly, "You're waking up my cravings."
Liam Linden glanced at her. Though her eyes were still a little red, she looked much better—not as sad and melancholic as before.

In the little time they had left, he wanted to cook as many delicious dishes for her as he could.
"We're out of eggs. I'll go borrow a couple from next door," Liam Linden said, quickly jogging out of the house.

Back then, that beast of a stepfather used to beat him and his mother. To protect him, she had done everything she could to find someone to send him here.
The villagers here were kind and down-to-earth, and they were especially good to him, this little boy from out of town.
They weren't wealthy, but they were far from stingy, giving him the candy and cookies they normally saved for themselves to coax a smile out of him.
