Chapter 61 - the meeting

The café near the Thames was quiet.

Rain had started falling outside, tapping softly against the glass windows. Inside, only two people sat across from each other.

One man the world believed had died five years ago.

And the man who had gone to prison for that death.

Krish Verma stared at the newspaper on the table.

The headline still felt unreal.

"VED OBEROI ALIVE?"

Krish slowly pushed the paper toward him.

"You want to start explaining now?"

Ved Oberoi leaned back in his chair.

His expression was calm, almost controlled.

"I never expected the photo to go public this soon," he said.

Krish's eyes flashed with anger.

"That's your problem?" he snapped. "I spent three years in prison for killing you!"

The words hung heavily in the air.

People at nearby tables glanced briefly before returning to their conversations.

Ved lowered his voice.

"I know."

Krish laughed bitterly.

"You know?"

"Yes."

Krish stood up suddenly, fists clenched.

"You disappeared, Ved! Everyone believed you were dead. The police found your blood. The weapon. The witnesses."

His voice dropped.

"And Kashvi testified against me."

Ved's eyes flickered slightly at her name.

Krish noticed.

"Oh don't look surprised," Krish said coldly. "Your wife made sure the court believed I pulled the trigger."

Silence stretched between them.

Finally Ved spoke.

"You didn't shoot me."

Krish's jaw tightened.

"No," he said quietly. "I didn't."

The rain outside grew heavier.

Ved leaned forward slightly.

"That night at the wedding… there were two shooters."

Krish froze.

"What?"

"One of them was meant to miss," Ved said calmly.

Krish stared at him.

"And the other?"

Ved's eyes hardened.

"The other one wasn't part of the plan."

The meaning landed slowly.

Krish sat down again.

"Wait," he said slowly. "You're saying someone else tried to kill you?"

"Yes."

"And Kashvi—"

Ved interrupted quietly.

"Kashvi thought she controlled the night."

Krish's expression darkened.

"But she didn't."

Krish rubbed his forehead, trying to process everything.

"So you're telling me… I went to prison because of a plan your own wife made?"

Ved didn't answer.

The silence said enough.

Krish exhaled sharply.

"That woman destroyed my life."

Ved's voice remained steady.

"She also saved yours."

Krish looked up.

"What?"

"If the second shooter had aimed two inches differently," Ved said calmly, "the bullet would have hit you instead of me."

Krish's expression changed completely.

Shock.

Realization.

"And you're just telling me this now?"

Ved's gaze shifted toward the window.

"I didn't have proof five years ago."

Krish leaned forward.

"And now?"

Ved reached into his coat and placed a small flash drive on the table.

"I do."

Krish stared at it.

"What's on it?"

Ved's answer was simple.

"The truth about that night."

Krish looked at him carefully.

"And what do you want from me?"

Ved met his eyes.

"Nothing."

Krish frowned.

"Then why meet me?"

Ved stood up slowly.

"Because the wrong man paid for someone else's crime."

He pushed the flash drive closer to Krish.

"And that ends now."

Ved turned and walked toward the café door.

Krish called after him.

"Ved!"

Ved stopped but didn't turn around.

Krish's voice came quieter this time.

"What about Kashvi?"

A pause.

Then Ved finally replied—

"That depends on her."

And with that, Ved Oberoi stepped out into the London rain, leaving Krish Verma alone with the truth that could destroy everything
