Part II: Invulnerability
The void energy that manifested wasn't defensive barrier or counter-attack.
It was absorption.
Divine consciousness taking the combined assault—the golden manifestation, the suppression fields, the phase-locked countermeasures—and consuming them. Not deflecting. Not blocking. Integrating the incoming energy as fuel rather than threat.
The attacking core-bearers felt their power draining. Felt their manifestations being drawn into void that had no bottom. Felt the horrifying recognition that they weren't fighting opponent—they were feeding predator.
"Cease fire!" the commander screamed. "Disengage! Fall back!"
But the absorption continued. The vessel's crystalline structure pulsing with integrated energy, growing brighter as it consumed attack that should have destroyed it. Not harming the attackers—Kaelen's awareness still regulated power toward nonlethal outcomes—but demonstrating capability that made resistance meaningless.
When the absorption concluded, when the attackers had exhausted their manifestations and stood gasping in depleted states that would take days to recover from, the vessel remained absolutely unchanged. Undamaged. Unaffected. Demonstrating what Kaelen had tried explaining but pride had prevented understanding.
Mortality's weapons couldn't harm transcendent consciousness.
"Your countermeasures are insufficient," the vessel said. Its tone carried no mockery, no triumph. Just divine certainty. "Phase-locked energy beams assume target operates on principles your technology was designed to disrupt. But divine consciousness doesn't follow those principles. Exists beyond categories your weapons presume. You're using tools designed for problems I no longer represent."
The commander stared with expression caught between horror and dawning comprehension. "You're... not even damaged."
"No. And continued assault will achieve identical results with increasing casualties as your forces exhaust themselves against invulnerable target." The vessel moved forward. "I am extracting Lucian. You lack capability to prevent this. Choose whether acceptance occurs peacefully or through demonstration that requires medical intervention for survivors."
"We can't just—" The commander struggled with theological programming that made surrender incomprehensible. "Family doctrine requires—"
"Family doctrine is obsolete. Divine resurrection has occurred. Binding suppression has failed. Reality has changed and doctrine hasn't adapted. You can acknowledge transformation or die proving point that serves no strategic purpose." The vessel's eclipsed eyes reflected consuming darkness. "But make the choice quickly. My patience is inherited from divine consciousness that thinks in centuries. But Kaelen's tactical awareness recognizes inefficiency in extended negotiation when outcome is predetermined."
The commander looked at her exhausted forces. Fifty elite warriors reduced to depleted shells. The most sophisticated countermeasures the Families possessed proving useless against threat they didn't understand.
She lowered her weapon. "Extract your brother. We won't interfere further."
"Wise decision." The vessel moved past the defensive position without slowing. "Communicate to Family Council that continued resistance is futile. I seek coexistence, not conquest. Partial manifestation rather than full resurrection. Compromise that preserves civilization rather than razing it. Those who accept transformation survive. Those who persist in theological denial die proving unnecessary points."
The vessel ascended the Golden Tower's internal architecture. Three floors. Direct path to detention facility where Lucian waited in medical restraints with extraction scheduled for dawn.
Family forces throughout the tower had received stand-down orders. Priests who'd supervised Lucian's detention evacuated. Security personnel withdrew to safe distance.
Everyone recognizing that resistance had become suicide without accomplishing objectives.
The vessel reached Lucian's chamber at 2247 hours. Seventeen minutes from first engagement to complete objective achievement. Two hundred hunters, one hundred fifty mercenaries, fifty elite core-bearers—all incapacitated or forced to withdraw without the vessel sustaining any damage.
Overwhelming force demonstration complete.
