Chapter 31 - Chapter Thirty-one – The Bond Speaks

The bond did not fade when the corridor emptied.

If anything, it grew louder.

Lyra retreated to the narrow chamber she had been assigned months ago, bare stone walls, a single window, a bed too small to stretch in without brushing the cold. She shut the door behind her and leaned against it, finally allowing herself to breathe.

The moment the latch clicked into place, the control she had been forcing cracked.

Heat surged through her chest, sharp and insistent, spreading outward like a living thing. Her wolf paced inside her mind, restless, agitated, circling the same truth again and again.

He is too close.

Lyra slid down the door slowly until she was seated on the floor, knees drawn up, fingers digging into the fabric of her sleeves.

This wasn't desire. Not entirely.

It was recognition.

The bond tugged at her awareness, pulling her thoughts back to the Alpha, his voice, low and controlled; the way his presence had filled the corridor, shutting down threat without effort; the split second where his control had nearly broken.

She had felt it.

His struggle.

That frightened her more than the bond itself.

Lyra pressed her palm to her sternum, as if she could physically hold the sensation in place. The bond responded immediately, pulsing beneath her touch, warm and heavy.

Too responsive.

Her wolf lifted its head, ears pricked.

He is not denying it anymore.

Lyra closed her eyes.

She had spent her life surviving by standing alone. Needing no one. Allowing nothing to tether her too tightly. Bonds, of any kind, were vulnerabilities.

This one was becoming impossible to ignore.

Across the palace, the Alpha stood at his window, hands braced against stone, breath measured.

The bond was loud.

It had never been like this before, never so intrusive, so aware. It pressed into his senses relentlessly, drawing his focus toward her with a pull that defied discipline.

He had felt her step closer in the corridor.

Had felt the bond surge like a demand.

His wolf was furious at the restraint he'd imposed. Furious at the distance he now forced between them.

This is a mistake, he told himself.

And yet, when he closed his eyes, he saw her exactly as she had stood, steady, defiant, unbowed even under challenge.

Unclaimed.

Unbroken.

Dangerous.

The bond responded sharply, tightening like a wire pulled too far.

He exhaled slowly, forcing control back into place.

But control no longer silenced it.

It answered.

Lyra shifted on the floor, suddenly acutely aware of the quiet. Of the way the bond seemed to hum beneath her thoughts, threading through her awareness like a second heartbeat.

She didn't fight it this time.

She listened.

And for the first time, she felt something unfamiliar bloom alongside the tension.

Longing.

Not for safety.

For presence.

Her wolf stilled, attentive.

He is listening too.

The realization sent a shiver through her.

She had felt him turn away in the corridor, not out of rejection, but necessity. The bond remembered. Replayed. Amplified.

Lyra rose slowly, moving to the window. The palace sprawled beneath her, lights glowing like distant stars.

She wondered where he was.

The bond answered with a sudden, sharp pull, directionless but intense, like gravity without coordinates.

Lyra sucked in a breath.

This was dangerous.

Because it wasn't just her instincts anymore.

It was connection.

Across the palace, the Alpha straightened abruptly, tension rippling through him. The bond surged in response, reacting to her awareness, her curiosity, her attention.

He clenched his jaw.

She was reaching.

Not deliberately.

But instinctively.

And the bond was answering both of them.

"This cannot continue," he murmured into the empty room.

The bond pulsed in response.

Not agreement.

Challenge.

Lyra pressed her forehead to the cool glass, pulse racing, wolf restless but no longer frantic.

The bond had spoken.

Not in words.

But in truth.

It wasn't going to weaken.

It was going to demand.

And soon, very soon, one of them would have to decide whether to answer it.
