Chapter 13 - Chapter Thirteen – The Cost of Being Seen

(Lyra POV)

The palace changed overnight.

It wasn't loud. There were no open confrontations, no shouted accusations. That would have been merciful.

Instead, doors closed more quietly. Assignments shifted without explanation. Conversations stopped when Lyra entered a room. Even the air felt different, tight,

cautious, judgmental.

Being noticed had a price.

Aria found her in the linen corridor, face pale. "They're talking," she whispered. "Not just omegas. Guards too."

Lyra folded a cloth with deliberate care. "About what?"

"You," Aria said. "About why the Alpha intervened. About what you are to him."

Lyra's fingers stilled for just a moment.

"I'm nothing," she said evenly.

But the bond stirred in protest.

The horns sounded just after midday.

Low. Formal. Ominous.

Lyra was in the inner courtyard when the gates opened. She didn't need to ask who it was, every guard snapped straighter, every servant froze.

An Alpha had arrived.

Not just any Alpha.

The banner bore the sigil of the Northern Pack.

Power. Wealth. Old blood.

Whispers spread like wildfire.

"He's unmated."

"He's here for negotiations."

"They say he's looking for an omega."

Lyra's wolf went utterly still.

(Kael POV)

Kael watched the arrival from the upper stairs, his expression carved from stone.

Alpha Rhydian dismounted with practiced ease, tall, broad-shouldered, his presence commanding without effort. A dangerous kind of calm radiated from him.

Darian leaned close. "Council invitation. You couldn't refuse it."

Kael didn't respond.

Rhydian's gaze swept the courtyard, and paused.

Just briefly.

On Lyra.

The bond snapped tight like a wire pulled too far.

Kael felt it immediately.

His wolf surged forward, furious.

Mine.

Rhydian smiled.

(Lyra POV)

She felt it then.

Not the mate bond.

Something else.

Attention.

It slid over her skin like a blade, not possessive, not gentle. Assessing.

Predatory.

Her instincts screamed.

Rhydian approached Madam Elthea first, exchanging formal words, but his eyes kept drifting back to Lyra. Measuring. Curious.

When his gaze finally met hers directly, Lyra did not bow.

She didn't even look away.

The courtyard seemed to hold its breath.

Rhydian's brow lifted slightly.

Interesting.

Later, during the formal welcome, Lyra served wine under Elthea's watchful eye. Every step was controlled, every movement precise.

Rhydian accepted his glass from her hand.

Their fingers brushed.

The reaction was immediate.

Kael's control fractured.

The bond exploded, hot, violent, undeniable.

The glass in Kael's hand cracked.

Silence fell.

Rhydian's eyes flicked up, sharp and knowing. "Ah," he said softly. "So that's how it is."

Kael stood.

The room tensed.

"She is not for negotiation," Kael said, voice low and lethal.

Rhydian smiled wider. "You haven't claimed her."

A pause.

A dangerous one.

"Be careful," Rhydian continued calmly. "Unclaimed omegas draw interest. Especially ones with spirit."

Lyra felt the weight of it then.

She wasn't just being watched anymore.

She was being considered.

That night, Lyra couldn't sleep. Once again.

Always the bond throbbing restlessly. Kael's presence pressed against her awareness like a storm held back by sheer will.

This was no longer about survival.

It was about choice.

About power.

About who would decide her fate.

And for the first time since the rejection, Lyra realized something terrifying and exhilarating:

She mattered.
