Chapter 48 - Chapter 47: The Guardian's Burden.

The Nakano safehouse had never felt so heavy.

It was 6:22 a.m.—dawn light barely creeping through the blinds. Haruto sat alone at the kitchen table, hands wrapped around a cold mug of tea he hadn't touched. The room was quiet except for the soft hum of the refrigerator and the occasional creak of the building settling.

Miya and Yuki were still asleep in the next room. Kris had left before midnight—said she needed to "check on some contacts." Rin had departed at sunrise, promising to return with more archive fragments from old clan records.

Haruto stared at his open palm.

No scars. No veins. No purple glow.

But he could still feel it.

A faint pressure—not a heartbeat anymore, but an echo. A whisper of what had been. Like a wound that had healed over but still ached when the weather changed.

Haruto closed his hand.

The pressure eased—just a little.

He hadn't told the others yet.

The visions hadn't stopped completely.

They were quieter now. Less violent.

But they still came.

Last night he had seen his sister again—not dying this time.

Smiling.

Handing him the black stone pendant he had lost long ago in the Purge.

"You kept your promise," she said in the dream.

Then she faded.

He had woken with tears on his face—silent, no sound.

He hadn't cried since his rebirth.

Until now.

The door to the bedroom opened.

Miya stepped out—hair messy, eyes tired but sharp.

"You didn't sleep again."

Haruto looked up.

"I slept. A little."

She sat across from him.

"You're lying."

He didn't argue.

Miya reached across the table—took his hand.

"The pressure… it's still there, isn't it?"

Haruto nodded.

"Not the core. Just… echoes. Memories. The divine voice said they'd fade. They haven't."

Miya's thumb traced the faint golden scars on his palm.

"You carried a god inside you. You fought it. You won. It's okay if some scars stay."

Haruto looked at her.

"I keep seeing her. My sister. Not dying. Just… being. Smiling. Like she's proud."

Miya's eyes softened.

"She would be."

Yuki appeared in the doorway—rubbing sleep from his eyes.

"Morning therapy session?"

Miya shot him a look.

Yuki sat down anyway.

"Dreams again?"

Haruto nodded.

Yuki leaned back.

"You know… I used to dream about my parents. Before the Gates took them. After a while, the dreams changed. They weren't nightmares anymore. Just… memories. Good ones."

Haruto looked at him.

"And?"

Yuki shrugged.

"You learn to live with them. They stop hurting. They start helping."

Miya squeezed Haruto's hand.

"She's part of you. Always will be. Use it. Let it make you stronger."

Haruto exhaled—slow, steady.

The pressure in his chest eased a little more.

He looked at them both.

"I'm not going back to being alone."

Miya smiled.

"You never were."

Yuki stood.

"Come on. Training starts in twenty. Kris and Rin are coming back with more intel. We need you sharp."

Haruto rose.

He felt the golden scars warm—soft, reassuring.

The abyss was gone.

Nox was gone.

But the Guardian remained.

And the echoes… they weren't enemies anymore.

They were reminders.

Of what he had lost.

Of what he had chosen to protect.

He followed Miya and Yuki to the courtyard.

The sun rose higher.

The city woke.

And the Shadow Wardens prepared for whatever came next.
