Chapter 43 - Chapter 42: The Severance.

The golden rift inside the Kyoto shrine had widened into a full doorway—soft light spilling out like liquid sunlight, warm against the cold night air. Haruto stood at the threshold, chains retracted, breathing slow and controlled. Miya and Yuki stood one step behind him. Kris and Rin waited at the outer torii—blood runes glowing faintly on Kris's arms, frost blades hovering around Rin.

The divine figure waited inside—silhouette brighter now, edges sharper, as if gathering strength for one final act.

Haruto spoke first.

"You said the third path requires sacrifice. Show me."

The figure raised both hands.

The light inside the rift shifted—forming a pedestal of pure gold. At its center floated a shard: small, triangular, glowing with the same golden hue as the figure itself.

"My last fragment. The catalyst. Touch it. Speak the words. Sever the core."

Haruto stepped forward.

Miya grabbed his wrist—hard.

"Wait."

Her voice cracked.

"There has to be another way."

Yuki stepped beside her.

"We can fight it. Suppress it longer. Find another relic. Another ritual."

Kris crossed her arms—voice rough.

"She's right. Severance is clean, but it's castration. You'll lose half of what makes you you."

Rin's golden eyes were steady.

"The price is too high. We can contain him. Seal the core. Bind it."

The figure's voice echoed—calm, but urgent.

"There is no time. The core reaches 7.2% as we speak. In minutes, partial control begins. Nox will speak through him. Act through him. You will have to fight your friend—kill him to stop it."

Haruto looked at the shard.

Then at his team.

The heartbeat surged—painful now.

Purple light flared in his eyes—ten seconds this time.

He saw it again.

Himself—eyes fully violet.

Standing over Miya's body—sword through her chest.

Yuki frozen in ice—shattered.

Kris bleeding out.

Rin broken.

Cities in flame.

The vision snapped.

Haruto staggered.

Miya caught him.

Yuki steadied him.

The purple faded.

But his breathing was ragged.

"I saw it. Me… killing all of you."

Miya's grip tightened.

"That's not happening."

Yuki's voice was hard.

"We won't let it."

Kris stepped forward—blood runes flaring brighter.

"Let me try something. Blood pact. I can bind the core. Bleed for it. Take some of the weight."

Rin shook his head.

"Your blood magic is powerful, but Nox is divine. It would consume you."

Haruto looked at the figure.

"Open it. I'm ready."

Miya's voice broke.

"No."

She stepped in front of him—blocking the rift.

"You don't get to decide alone."

Yuki joined her—ice wall forming behind them.

"We're not letting you walk in there and come out half a person."

Kris smirked—dark.

"She's right. You're not the only one with skin in this game."

Rin's blades hovered.

"We fight together. Or we die together. But we don't sacrifice one."

Haruto looked at them—all five.

The heartbeat pounded—louder.

Purple light flickered in his eyes again—longer.

He felt it.

Control slipping.

Nox's voice whispered.

"Let them die. Or let me in."

Haruto's voice cracked—first time.

"I… can't lose you."

Miya stepped closer—hand on his cheek.

"You won't. We'll find another way. Together."

Yuki's ice wall thickened.

"We buy time. Suppress. Train. Research. Whatever it takes."

Kris cracked her knuckles—blood dripping from her palms.

"I'll bleed the fucker dry if I have to."

Rin's blades spun.

"We stand with you."

The figure watched—silent.

Haruto looked at the shard.

Then at them.

The purple light faded.

He exhaled—shaky.

"Okay."

He turned to the figure.

"We need time. We need options."

The figure dimmed.

"Time is short. The core reaches 8% in hours. Partial control begins. Nox will fight from within."

Haruto nodded.

"Then we fight back."

He looked at his team.

"We seal him. Or we purge him. Or we sever him. But we do it together."

Miya smiled—tears in her eyes.

"Together."

Yuki nodded.

"Together."

Kris cracked her neck.

"About time."

Rin's blades retracted.

"Agreed."

The figure's light softened.

"Then prepare. The rift remains open. The shard waits. When you are ready… speak the words."

The light faded.

The rift dimmed—but did not close.

Haruto looked at his team.

The heartbeat came again—slow, defiant.

He placed a hand on his chest.

"Not yet."

He looked at the sky.

"We have hours. Maybe a day."

Miya took his hand.

"Then we use them."

They turned back.

The shrine stood silent.

The rift waited.

The core waited.

But now it faced five hearts.

Not one.

The Guardian was not alone.

And the Sovereign… would not rise easy.
