Chapter 16 - Her Nights

3:30 AM.

[Withman's home]

Hira is still tossing and turning on the bed-rolling from one side to the other, then back again. Sleep refuses to come. Wired earphones are plugged into her ears.

The song plays on. It's her favorite, yet she can't fall asleep.

She can't stop thinking about Geone's words.

"My enemy has enemies too."

The question won't leave her mind.

Hira suddenly yanks the earphones out, restless, sitting up on the bed.

"How dare he. What does he know? Nothing... nothing.

He thinks everyone has a perfect life like him.

But he doesn't even have humanity... asshole!"

Her eyes burn with anger and a strange, unbearable pain.

She closes her eyes and leans back again, lying on the bed.

The moment she opens them, tears spill from the corners of her eyes. The tears slide down her skin and trail along her ear.

She puts the earphones back in.

"I .hate .him."

She closes her eyes again.

Suddenly, a loud noise erupts from outside. She immediately pulls the earphones off.

Jhoooonnnnn!!!!!!

The sound roars, and her door shakes violently.

She runs and opens the door-and a glass hits her forehead.

"AAAAAAHHHHH!"

She collapses onto the floor at once.

One hand clutches her head; her vision is blurred.

Her parents are still screaming at each other.

Two broken glasses lie nearby. Another glass is in her mother's hand-it looks like it might shatter too.

Everything feels unclear to Hira. Her parents' shouting and fighting merge with the echo of her own scream.

They don't even notice her.

Her father shouts at her mother,

"Stop this now. Living with you has become impossible."

Her mother, Mrs. Whitman, hurls the glass in her hand. It smashes against the table. She screams,

"Go... go! I want a divorce too."

She storms out from the kitchen and grabs Mr. Whitman by the collar.

"Because of you, this is my life now.

Marrying a disgusting man like you has turned my life into hell. I should never have married at all."

"Why did you do this, huh? Why? A toxic woman like you can't live with anyone!"

Their struggle doesn't stop.

Hira's throat tightens.

She moves her hand away from her head and looks at it-blood covers her palm.

With great difficulty, she presses her hand against the wall beside her. Red blood stains the white wall.

Using every bit of strength she has, she stands up. Her body feels like it's about to collapse to the ground, yet she forces herself upright.

Clinging to the wall, she somehow makes it into her room.

As soon as she enters, she manages to shut the door. Even the sound of the door disappears into the chaos of shouting.

She sinks down beside the door, leaning against the wall, sitting on the floor-lifeless.

Her gaze drifts to the window. Her brown eyes seem darker, deeper.

The tears she tried to hide finally escape, spilling freely.

Blood and tears race down her cheeks, soaking into her dress.

Hira stares blankly at the window. For some reason, she forgot to lock it tonight.

Yet it feels as though an invisible glass blocks the cold outside from entering.

She doesn't feel cold at all. Instead, a sudden heat spreads through her body.

She looks down at her dress.

Seeing it stained with blood makes irritation crawl through her skin.

Something feels wrong... unbearable. The heat intensifies. It becomes too much.

She starts pulling at her dress desperately.

With violent force, she tears at it.

A sleeve rips apart.

Her breathing grows heavy, rapid. She keeps tearing,

harder and harder.

In an instant, ignoring the rough wall behind her, her body crashes onto the floor.

Tears pour endlessly from her eyes. She curls in on herself, shaking, her sobs breaking into faint, fractured sounds.

Her knees draw up to her stomach.

Blood from her head spreads across the floor, mixing with the water of her tears.

That sound-her pain-gets trapped within the walls of her room.

Even it never reaches her own ears .
