The note beneath the city rose through the open gate.
It entered the plaza through Martin's boots first. The stone quivered, the hanging bells swayed without being struck, and every Sairren above them spread their wings at once.
Mireva spun toward the gate. "Back from the balconies. Clear the lower lanes."
Her order traveled upward in clipped chirps. The wardens moved immediately, guiding unarmed Sairren through doors and across the suspended bridges. The red markers above them remained, but none of Martin's party raised a weapon in their direction.
Something scraped against the other side of the gate.
The first creature dragged itself into the plaza on six black limbs. Bronze rings surrounded its long throat, each one vibrating as its jaw opened. Silver resonance clung to its Dark Force core, but the pattern had been wound backward until it resembled a knot.
