Chapter 64 - The Insolvency of Flesh

Auditor Vane did not run. He could not.

The air in the Sixth Sector had ceased to obey the laws of physics. Where gravity had once crushed everything toward the bone floor, there was now only a terrifying, localized suction—a hollow vacuum created by the sudden deletion of Alaric's mass.

"This is an illegal transaction!" Vane screamed, his voice cracking as he scrambled backward, dragging his ruined leaden suit through the soul-ash. He fumbled at his belt for an emergency distress flare, his stone-grey fingers slick with cold sweat. "You have no assets! Your knight erased his own registry! You are an un-collateralized husk with forty-one days to live!"

Kaelen took a single step off the edge of the ship's quarterdeck.

He didn't fall. He walked on the empty air, his boots leaving faint, violet-black ripples of liquid debt in the void. His black coat billowed around him like a shroud of ink, its crimson lining glowing with a dark, suffocating intensity that swallowed the ambient light.

"Forty-one days," Kaelen repeated flatly. His voice carried no anger, no theatrical fury—only the icy, absolute finality of an execution sentence. "That is more than enough time to collect your principal."

Vane finally managed to spark the flare. A streak of blinding silver light shot upward, piercing the dark chasm toward the higher heavens—a direct distress call to Lord Lucian's Executive Suite.

"The Syndicate sees this!" Vane shrieked, grinning manic, terrified teeth as the silver light flared above. "The Board of Directors is watching! If you strike a Senior Auditor without a balance sheet, they will issue a Sector-Wide Liquidation!"

"Let them watch," Kaelen whispered.

He reached out his bare hand, closing his fingers into a tight fist.

SNAP.

The silver distress flare in the sky didn't detonate—it shorted out. The light turned a sickening shade of bruised violet before condensing into a tiny, dense droplet of dark ink, which fell silently back into Kaelen's open palm.

Vane's breath hitched in his throat. "What... what did you just do?"

"I shorted your call," Kaelen said, stepping directly in front of the Auditor. "Your distress signal was sent on borrowed bandwidth. I just bought the rights to your signal's transmission, foreclosed on the frequency, and redirected the cost to your personal soul-bank."

[SYSTEM NOTIFICATION]

[Forced Asset Seizure Initiated]

[Target: Senior Auditor Vane]

[Collateral Seized: Voice, Authority, Divine Exemption]

Vane opened his mouth to scream, but no sound came out. His vocal cords had been forcefully liquidated to cover the cost of the intercepted signal.

Panicking, Vane thrust his iron-bound ledger forward, attempting to channel the raw, authoritative gravity of the Executive Suite to crush Kaelen's heart. But Kaelen didn't even raise his rowan cane. He simply reached out with his left hand and grabbed the iron ledger by its spine.

The violet-black ink pulsing beneath Kaelen's skin bled directly into the iron pages.

SZZZZT!

The iron book began to rust, rot, and dissolve at a terrifying speed. The ancient parchment pages, filled with centuries of defaulted soul-contracts and corporate executions, crumbled into useless black dust that blew away in the heavy wind.

"You spent four lifetimes relying on their rules, Vane," Kaelen murmured, his amber eyes completely hollow, staring straight into the Auditor's horrified face. "You thought the system was a shield. You forgot that the system is just code. And code... is just debt."

Kaelen shoved his hand straight into Vane's chest.

There was no blood. Kaelen's hand passed through the charcoal-grey wool suit and into Vane's stone torso as if it were water. When Kaelen pulled his hand back, he was clutching a glowing, pulsating sphere of solid silver ore—Vane's Core Divinity, the condensed physical weight of his rank as a Senior Auditor.

Vane fell to his knees, his eyes wide, his stone skin rapidly drying out, cracking like parched earth. Without his divine core, the crushing weight of the Sixth House's remaining gravity turned on him. His leaden suit felt like tons of iron, collapsing his ribcage and pinning him to the gray dust where Alaric had vanished moments before.

Kaelen looked down at the silver sphere in his hand.

[CORE ASSET OBTAINED: Senior Auditor's Authority]

[Value: 50,000,000,000 Points]

[Options:]

[1. Convert to Lifespan (+120 Days)]

[2. Absorb Asset into Core]

Kaelen didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.

CRUSH.

He squeezed his fist, shattering the 50-billion-point divine core into glowing silver dust. He didn't add a single day to his ticking clock. Instead, he channeled the raw, stolen energy directly backward—letting it wash over the ghost ship's iron hull, repairing the cracked deck planks, reinforcing the sails with silver thread, and stabilizing the ship's trajectory through the dense abyss.

He left himself with forty-one days. He left himself on the exact edge of death.

Behind him, on the deck of the ship, Seraphina watched him walk back.

Her hands were still trembling, her holy white robes stained with dark blood and gray soot. She didn't look at the dying, stone form of Auditor Vane crumbling into dust behind Kaelen. She only looked at Kaelen's face—at the horrifying, beautiful, broken boy who had just thrown away 120 days of life just to keep his vessel moving forward.

"You didn't take the time," she whispered, her voice cracking as he stepped back onto the quarterdeck.

"Time is a derivative," Kaelen said, his voice flat, emotionless. He picked up his split rowan cane from the deck, leaning on it heavily as his legs gave a sudden, violent shudder from the physical backlash. "If I extend my life with their currency, I am playing by Lucian's rules. I don't want his days, Seraphina."

Seraphina closed the distance between them in a flash. She didn't hug him this time. She grabbed him by the lapels of his black coat, pulling him down until his cold, ink-stained face was inches from hers.

Her dark eyes were wild, unhinged, filled with a frantic, desperate flame that burned hotter than her holy starlight ever had.

"Then take mine," she snarled, tears spilling over her blood-smudged cheeks, leaving pale tracks on her skin. "I told you, Kaelen! I don't care about the Third Heaven! I don't care about the Saintess lineage! Take my lifespan! Burn my soul! Convert me into a short-position! Just... don't leave me alone in the dark like he did!"

She gestured wildly toward the empty patch of dust below the ship where Alaric had deleted himself.

Kaelen looked down at her. For a brief, flickering second, a shadow of deep, human pain crossed his amber eyes—the pain of a boy who had watched everyone he ever cared about turn into numbers on a ledger.

He gently reached up, his cold, ink-stained thumb wiping a tear of blood from beneath her eye.

"Not yet, Seraphina," Kaelen whispered softly. "Your light is the only thing left that Lucian cannot price. I won't let him buy it."

He turned away, looking past the collapsing bone pillars of the Sixth Sector, down into the deep, swirling vortex of the Seventh Layer below—the gateway to the Higher Heavens.

Above them, deep in the dark sky, a final system notification flashed in pale, cold gold text, reflecting off the tears in Seraphina's eyes and the dark ink on Kaelen's neck.

[NOTICE FROM EXECUTIVE SUITE]

[Senior Auditor Vane: Liquidated.]

[Sector 06: Defaulted.]

[Lord Lucian has authorized the deployment of the 'Seven Arch-Auditors'.]

[Days Until Total Account Termination: 41 Days, 02 Hours, 11 Minutes.]

Kaelen gripped his rowan cane tightly, his jaw locked. "Set course for the Seventh House, Seraphina. Let's go meet our creditors."
