"Tite probably never expected Zubizarreta to bring out this kind of hidden tactical weapon and use it without holding anything back."
"And it has been perfectly integrated with the strengths of the Spanish players, forming a very intelligent mismatch defense on the pitch."
"Some fans may not fully understand what mismatch defense means. Zubizarreta's pyramid staggered defense is quite different from ordinary versions."
"In Zubizarreta's pyramid defensive system, once the staggered structure is activated, players adopt diagonal positioning and are always ready to shift. This creates local numerical advantages, often turning situations into multiple defenders against one attacker."
"And the reason it's called 'staggered' is not about misaligning the defense, but about disrupting the offense."
"By creating these localized advantages, the pyramid defense cuts off connections between attacking players, forcing them out of sync. The attackers become isolated and lose support, leaving them in a passive position."
"From Brazil's last two attacking sequences, both Neymar and Jesus were separated by Spain's pyramid structure. That is exactly why Brazil have struggled to create a final shot."
"That's football. No matter how beautiful your build up is, if you cannot turn it into a shot or a goal, it counts for nothing. Only goals win matches."
Derek Rae was clearly enjoying himself.
When such an extreme defensive system was displayed on the pitch, it carried a distinct modern football elegance.
Watching the match, Klopp could not take his eyes off Zubizarreta.
Beside him, Krawietz understood that look immediately. Klopp had looked at him the same way back then.
"I need to call Mike," Klopp said, pulling out his phone.
Krawietz handed over his own phone, already dialing.
"Boss, I know what you're thinking."
Klopp laughed.
"Great minds think alike."
...
Play resumed. Brazil's final surprise had been shut down by Spain, and from that moment on, time was on Spain's side.
As long as the clock ran out, Spain would eliminate the five time champions Brazil and advance to the semifinals.
"Spain's final form in this World Cup has now taken shape!"
"For a tournament like the World Cup, every team prepares new tactical systems."
"But they do not reveal everything at once. They unveil their ideas step by step as the tournament progresses."
"From the first group stage match, we saw Spain's traditional possession game, then the sudden emergence of vertical short passing, then their well drilled counterattacks."
"And now in this match, we see the pyramid system. I believe that in the remaining knockout matches, Spain will build around defensive pyramids and rapid counterattacks, combining the two into a powerful new style."
"This Spain has completely redefined its traditional identity. But change is not necessarily a bad thing."
"In fact, progress only comes through innovation. Hierro's coaching staff has brought us real surprises!"
"And this new Spanish midfield has been extremely effective, especially Leo Lin, who has provided tremendous tactical support for this counterattacking system!"
67th minute!
"Brazil make a substitution. Firmino comes on for Jesus. A direct replacement."
"Firmino from Liverpool is a very complete player, but in this tournament he has been behind Jesus in Tite's selection order."
As Firmino stepped onto the pitch, Leo Lin was waiting near the halfway line. He quietly reached out, and the two shared a subtle high five.
As close friends at club level, Leo Lin wanted Firmino to do well. Just not in this match.
After Firmino came on, Brazil adjusted their attack. They began playing more direct long balls toward him, trying to make use of his strengths.
It was the simplest and fastest approach, but also the hardest way to create goals.
Because he was facing Spain's veteran center back duo, the elite pairing from Barcelona and Real Madrid.
"Sergio Ramos and Piqué. Both highly experienced, mentally strong defenders."
"They have played in countless big matches. Against Firmino, they position themselves one in front and one behind, working together to shut him down completely."
79th minute!
"Another long ball from the back toward the front."
"Firmino drops to act as a target, but Ramos gets there first and heads it clear!"
"Ramos has been outstanding today. I would give him a perfect ten."
"Busquets controls the ball in midfield, dictating the tempo with calm possession."
"He passes to Thiago. A long ball to the right again, looking to exploit space in behind."
"Marcelo cannot keep up. David Silva collects it on the wing and drives forward!"
"A high ball toward the far post!"
"Chance!"
David Silva's cross is excellent, heading straight to the far side.
But Asensio's diving run is just a fraction short.
One touch would have been enough to score.
"So close!"
"Asensio was just a step slow. He looks fatigued."
On the sideline, Hierro makes changes.
"Spain are making substitutions. Iniesta replaces Asensio. Saúl comes on for Busquets."
"Isco replaces David Silva. Three changes at once!"
With fresh legs, Spain shift their counterattacks from the right to the left.
Iniesta moves into the left midfield role, taking over David Silva's function.
Play resumes. Brazil begin sending frequent long balls into Spain's penalty area.
Even if it is just hopeful play, one goal would keep them alive.
Marcelo pushes forward aggressively, almost playing as a left winger.
84th minute!
"Neymar again, one against two on the left!"
"He cuts inside. It is tight, but he gets through!"
"Neymar has been excellent in the second half!"
"He drives toward the box. Ramos steps across to cover."
"Neymar!"
"Fake shot, cuts again, adjusts, then shoots!"
"Piqué gets a crucial block!"
"The ball rebounds to the edge of the box. Saúl controls and turns!"
"Coutinho presses hard, but Saúl breaks forward. He is quick and full of energy!"
Saúl had been waiting for this moment. Waiting for the chance to release Leo Lin.
Leo Lin had already started his run, but Paulinho was tight to him.
Diego Costa suddenly dropped back and set a screen.
On the sideline, Xavi tensed. This was one of the counterattacks he had designed.
Just one step away.
Leo Lin curved his run around Diego Costa.
That screen gave him the space to break free.
Saúl made his decision. With the outside of his foot, he played a diagonal pass to the left.
Not to Leo Lin, but to Iniesta, who had drifted wide.
"A long ball to Iniesta. Costa is central. Isco on the right!"
And in the most dangerous channel between them, Leo Lin surged forward with long strides, finding space.
Iniesta swung his left foot.
A signature curling cross into the channel.
Leo Lin rose high.
Powerful and dominant.
He drove off the ground with both feet, his body lifting into the air, meeting the cross at its highest point like a pair of wings in flight.
"Boom!"
A crushing header that killed Brazil's last hope.
