Chapter 127 - Choosing the Next Partner

A short while later—

Peter was kicked out of the room holding a stack of documents.

"Brat! Go by yourself! I'm not accompanying you anymore!"

Lorelei's fury practically increased her cup size by two levels.

She was even beginning to question her own charm.

"Uh… Lorelei?"

"Get lost!"

Peter withdrew his hand awkwardly from the door.

His instincts told him—

If he lingered any longer, he might become a human ice sculpture.

"What kind of construction is this anyway… the League's rooms aren't even soundproof. Must've been some shoddy contractor…"

Shaking his head, Peter walked out of the residential area alone.

Whitney would probably sleep until noon. He decided to pick up the Pokémon Egg by himself first.

Then he'd fly back to Sinnoh and continue traveling.

The Kanto Daycare was located between Cerulean City and Saffron City—a considerable distance from Indigo Plateau.

Although Rufflet had learned Fly, it was still far too small to carry a person.

So Peter stepped outside to look for transportation.

"Hmm? Professor Peter? You haven't left yet?"

Peter turned around.

It was Professor Oak's student—Professor Cerise.

Future Pokémon Professor.

Father of Chloe.

Thinking of Cerise inevitably led to memories of Goh.

Ah yes.

Goh.

The so-called "co-protagonist."

The red-and-white Poké Ball sniper.

The human bug.

But what made him so frustrating wasn't his ridiculous capture rate.

It was this—

He caught Pokémon endlessly.

Never trained them.

Never bonded with them.

Just collected them like trophies.

As if they were objects.

And worst of all—

Despite Ash constantly helping him, Goh once said:

"I never planned on helping Ash achieve his dream."

That line alone left scars across the fanbase.

And Cerise's indulgence wasn't unrelated.

What began as a respectable research lab eventually turned into Goh's private zoo.

That said—

Cerise himself was still a decent man.

And at this point in the timeline, he wasn't yet a full-fledged Pokémon Professor.

In fact—

He was technically Peter's junior.

"It's Professor Cerise. What a coincidence," Peter smiled. "I'm heading to the Kanto Daycare first before leaving."

"In that case, would you like to travel together? I'm returning toward Vermilion City, so it's the same direction."

Cerise released a Swellow.

Peter nodded gratefully.

"To be honest, I was just worrying about how to get there. I'll trouble you for a lift."

"It's no trouble at all. It's my honor to discuss research with you."

And so—

Peter caught a free ride bird.

-----

An hour later, they arrived at the Kanto Daycare, nestled within rolling mountains.

It was a specially designated conservation zone, managed carefully year-round.

Each year, starter Pokémon, rare species, and countless entrusted Pokémon were raised and bred here.

Through deliberate genetic selection—

Many exceptional and rare Pokémon Eggs were produced.

-----

At the front desk stood an elderly couple.

After presenting the League authorization documents, Peter was led into a climate-controlled incubation room.

The ceiling was constructed from transparent reinforced membrane—allowing sunlight in while shielding against harsh weather.

Eggs rested in individual incubation slots, partially submerged in nutrient solution.

Chansey walked around with stethoscopes, monitoring the health of each Egg.

Near the front rows stood Larvesta, Magcargo, and Ponyta—Pokémon with Flame Body—accelerating the hatching process.

Peter whistled softly.

"Professional. Kanto Daycare really lives up to its name."

He was guided to the Normal-type Egg section.

His eyes scanned the list.

System information projected silently before him:

Tauros (Egg Form)

Ability: Intimidate

Talent: 478 / 490

Egg Moves: Endeavor, Curse

Kangaskhan (Egg Form, near hatching)

Ability: Scrappy

Talent: 466 / 490

Egg Moves: None

Zangoose (Egg Form)

Ability: Immunity

Talent: 443 / 458

Egg Moves: Disable, Double Kick

Munchlax (Egg Form)

Ability: Gluttony

Talent: 390 / 390 (Perfect)

Egg Moves: Double-Edge, Fissure, Counter

One by one, he reviewed them.

Only the Munchlax truly impressed him.

Perfect talent.

Inherited Fissure—a terrifying move.

In reality, OHKO moves like Fissure, Guillotine, Sheer Cold, and Horn Drill didn't guarantee instant knockouts. Rather—

Fissure distorted terrain, trapping opponents.

Sheer Cold froze foes solid.

Guillotine and Horn Drill inflicted catastrophic wounds.

But against evenly matched opponents, landing them decisively was rare.

Thus, they functioned more as high-risk, high-damage ultimate techniques.

"Have you chosen, young man?" the elderly caretaker asked kindly.

Peter cradled the Munchlax Egg.

"Almost… I'll take one more look. If nothing better appears, I'll choose this one."

It was excellent—

But Gluttony wasn't ideal for competitive battles.

If it had Thick Fat instead—

He wouldn't hesitate.

As he continued scanning, murmuring softly to himself—

"Zigzagoon… Miltank… Lickitung… Meowth…

Pidgey… Eevee… Igglybuff… Spearow… Farfetch'd…"

Then—

He froze.

"Hmm?!"
