Chapter 158: The Golden Pass
Kian Voss let out a low whistle, turning the signet ring over in his gloved fingers. His eyes practically sparkled with "Loot-Fever."
With this ring, he hadn't just secured a new ally; he had unlocked a permanent extraction point. He now held the digital authorization to use the House Nightingale private lifts and breach Spire-tier transit gates. In the logic of the Hive, this wasn't just jewelry—it was a Master Keycard.
Lady Nightingale clearly wasn't a minor player; she was a scion of a Spire-lineage. Her family's industrial assets likely spanned half the Hive. This ring would open doors that even an Inquisitor's badge might struggle with.
Kian blinked, and the Tactical Cogitator displayed the item's codex entry:
[Unique Relic: Signet of House Campella]
Composition: Master-crafted Adamantium alloy. Virtually indestructible.
Features: Integrated Micro-Vox Terminal. Encrypted Biometric Link to House Campella industrial networks.
[Lore]
This ring was forged in the foundries of Mars, sanctified by a Tech-Priest Dominus, and later blessed by a High Cardinal of the Ecclesiarchy to carry the Emperor's light. It was held in the family shrine for years before being gifted to the Lady upon her ascension to adulthood.
[Soul-Bonding Active]
Due to the weight of centuries of prayer and service, the item possesses a faint Empyrean Essence. If fused with your soul-fire, the item will return to you in the Sanctum upon biological failure.
[Extraction Perk]
Acts as an 'Encoded Transmitter.' Grants safe passage through House Campella checkpoints and unlocks "Luxury Extractions."
Kian tucked the ring into his secure pouch, then looked at Lady Nightingale.
"My Lady, once we hit the Mid-Hive, do you have a 'Safe Zone' to retreat to? I'll be honest—we're a squad of regulars who were drafted by force. Before we ascended, the Mid-Levels were already sliding into a riot. It's not as bad as the zombie-fest up there, but it's far from peaceful."
Nightingale shook her head, her expression weary. "My family has dozens of manufactorums and estates in the middle tiers, but we rely on the Enforcer Corps for security. If the Hive is in revolt, my personal guard is likely already overrun. I have nowhere to go until my father's private militia can reach me."
"In that case," Kian said, leaning against the elevator wall, "you stay with the Voss Guard. We'll be your iron shadow until the 'Cavalry' arrives. We can keep you breathing—for a price."
Nightingale smiled faintly. "Then I am under your protection. And rest assured, Sergeant... once this 'Audit' is over, I will see to it that my father pays a One-Million Scrip bonus to every man in this elevator."
The air in the lift froze. Twenty soldiers stood paralyzed, staring at the Lady with wide, disbelieving eyes.
Ash, still lying on the floor with a scorched chest-plate, sat up with a violent start despite his injuries. "HOW MUCH?!"
Kian let out a dry bark of laughter. "Calm your hearts, you beauties! The Lady said a million! To a Spire-Lord, that's just rounding error on a wine shipment. To a bunch of dirt-shufflers like you, it's a ticket to a new life.
"We're 'Brothers of the Lift' now! And brothers don't lie to each other, right, My Lady?"
"Indeed," Nightingale chuckled. "Brothers do not lie."
The atmosphere in the elevator shifted from "Survival-Horror" to "Ecstatic Celebration." The soldiers began chatting with a manic energy, already planning how to spend a million scrips in a Hive that was currently burning down.
Kian, meanwhile, turned his attention to his personal "Red-Tier" loot: the Bolt Pistol and the Chainsword.
The Bolt-weapon was the iconic engine of Imperial destruction. Unlike a standard autogun, it didn't fire simple lead slugs. It fired Bolts—0.75 caliber, self-propelled, mass-reactive explosive shells. Each round was a miniature rocket that accelerated in flight and detonated inside the target's body.
[COGITATOR SCAN: MK. XI MARS-PATTERN BOLT PISTOL]
Ammo: 15mm Mass-Reactive.
Penetration Grade: 6 (Highest Tier).
Trait: [Shield-Breaker] — Ignores 50% of the target's physical armor value.
Note: A Lasgun at full power is only Grade-5. This hand-cannon is a tier above "Military-Standard."
Kian had four magazines, five rounds each. It was an "over-sized" pistol, its design prioritizing firepower over ergonomics. He had to hold it with both hands just to keep the weight steady. It felt like holding a brick made of pure violence.
Then there was the Chainsword.
It was a standard-issue "Solomon" pattern, featuring monomolecular-edged teeth that spun at thousands of rotations per minute. At full speed, it could chew through plasteel plating or turn an Ogryn into a red puddle.
Kian tested the weight. Five kilograms. It was too heavy for a normal man to swing with any speed. A sword from the ancient 3k era usually weighed less than two kilos; anything heavier was a club. This confirmed the rumors: Imperial Commissars were bio-augmented "super-men." They had to be, just to carry their own gear.
Kian took off his tattered grey jacket and wrapped the weapons in the fabric. He couldn't walk around the Mid-Hive with these in plain sight. An unlicensed man carrying a Bolt Pistol was a "Kill-on-Sight" target for any Enforcer patrol.
He walked over to the elevator's master console. The interface was high-tier: a glowing tactical map displayed three primary zones—the Upper Spire, the Mid-Hive, and the Underhive. Each zone was divided into hundreds of sub-levels.
Kian noted that the elevator had access to nearly half the floors. Most importantly, his finger hovered over the lowest setting.
"House Nightingale Private Transit: Sump-Level 0."
A grin spread across his face. "This isn't just a lift... it's a tactical teleporter. I can do a raid in the Spire and be back in my brewery for dinner in ten minutes."
He looked at the glowing runes, realizing that the "Voss Logistics" network had just gone global.
