Chapter 1 - Orpheus Flowers

Orpheus Flowers

Age

23

Height

5'9"

Heritage

Bastard son of Vaemond Velaryon and an unnamed First Men woman (a whore). She died in childbirth. Raised in an orphanage in the Reach after his parentage became known when he was five.

Appearance

Dark brown skin, strong features, and striking violet-purple eyes that mark the Valyrian blood he carries. His hair is pure white, worn in thick twisted locs piled high, with a short white beard and mustache. A string of pale iridescent shells hangs at his throat. He favors practical traveler's clothes: a cream scarf, light shirt, dark sleeveless vest, leather belt, and a light wrap at the waist. A simple bandage is often wrapped around one forearm. In his left hand he frequently carries a small white sea-bird that seems unusually calm around him.

Origin / Backstory

In his first life he was born in the deep bayou outside New Orleans. His grandmother came from a long line of voodoo queens and told him he had the talent; he listened, learned the roots and the old ways, but never practiced seriously. Music was his true devotion. Jazz, country, the old songs and the new ones he lived for the nights under the stars with a trumpet or guitar in his hands.

He died young. The next thing he knew, he was a newborn in the Reach in the year 88 AC. At five years old the truth came out: he was a bastard. An orphanage took him in. The knowledge of his previous life never faded. He carried an entire library of music and voodoo practice in his head, along with an unnatural gift for both. Over the years the town he settled in began earning a quiet reputation as a place of music. Orpheus made his living singing songs no one in Westeros had ever heard, crafting instruments, brewing potions, and selling tobacco to Essosi traders (Westerosi mostly turn their noses up at it).

Now, in 111 AC, he has decided the time has come to stop hiding the other half of what he is. Tonight is his first public working woven into a street performance.

Skills

Musical Prodigy

Voice, resophonic guitar, and trumpet are his primary instruments. He can play almost anything he puts his hands on, but these three are extensions of him. His repertoire ranges from the old jazz and country of his first life to original pieces that sound both foreign and strangely familiar to Westerosi ears.

Potion-making

Taught by his grandmother's lessons and refined in this world. He is already better than most hedge-masters at practical mixtures (hangover cures, restorative tonics, subtle stimulants).

Tobacco craft

His primary steady income. He grows, cures, and blends leaf that sells well across the Narrow Sea.

Weapon Style

Prefers a staff as his main weapon, backed by a few small throwing daggers kept close against his body. He is not a knight and does not fight like one; he uses reach, timing, and the staff's ability to channel power.

Abilities Practitioner of Voodoo

Spirit Work

Communion with the Restless

senses, calls, and bargains with lingering spirits, shades, and the recently dead. Strong enough practitioners can compel answers or minor service.

Spirit-Riding

temporarily allows a spirit to partially inhabit his body (or a willing/weakened host) for heightened senses, strength, or knowledge.

Grave-Tied Power

draws residual strength from places of death, old battlefields, or tokens taken from the dead. The longer the connection, the stronger the working.

Curses & Hexes

Lingering Afflictions

slow curses wasting sickness, compounding misfortune, persistent nightmares, gradual unraveling of health and luck.

Mark of the Spoken Word

a curse spoken and sealed with blood, spit, or a personal item clings to a name and can be triggered at distance.

Echo Curses

voice-based hexes that lie dormant until the victim hears a specific sound, word, or Orpheus's voice again.

Proxy Work

links through belongings, hair, blood, or carefully made figures; harm done to the proxy transfers.

Dream-Sending

Pushes nightmares, visions, or compulsive urges into a sleeper's mind. Clarity and invasiveness scale with how well he knows the target.

Voice of Compulsion

Laces spoken commands with spiritual weight so listeners feel an unnatural urge to obey, fear, or freeze. Greatly amplified when using the Hex-Ring Staff.

Protective & Counter

Wards of Bone and Iron

temporary barriers against lesser spirits, weak curses, or scrying.

Curse Reflection

with preparation, catches an incoming hex and turns part of it back.

Spirit Shield

calls minor spirits to form a short-lived defensive presence around himself or an ally.

Equipment

Hex-Ring Staff

A tall staff of rare Westerosi wood topped by a smooth wooden circle. Four iron rings sit fixed along the lower curve of the circle (two on each side). The wood itself carries a lingering dark resonance residual voodoo power that never fully sleeps.

Core Abilities

Magic Channel

draws in and focuses ambient magic, the wielder's own power, and the residual dark energy in the wood. Workings performed while gripping it are stronger and more efficient, but still exact the same personal cost.

Voice Amplification & Distortion

the circular head acts as a living resonator. Spoken words, chants, or commands can be projected far beyond normal range. The four rings shape the voice

– deepened into rolling thunder

– split into a layered chorus

– thinned into a cold whisper that seems to come from inside the listener's skull

– twisted into unnatural, unsettling tones

The staff can hold and replay a short phrase or command for a limited time after it is spoken.

The Four Rings

1.Sonic / Compulsion Ring

strengthens the voice's power to command attention and plant simple directives. Listeners find the words harder to ignore or forget.

2.Illusion / Glamour Ring

lets the amplified voice carry false sounds and sensations (approaching feet, crackle of fire, the presence of something unseen).

3.Binding / Marking Ring

leaves a lingering magical imprint on those who hear the voice. The mark can later be used to locate, weaken, or reopen a channel to the target.

4.Shadow / Hex Ring (elemental-tinged) draws on the residual voodoo edge inside the wood. Sharpens curses and spirit-tainted workings and gives them a faint elemental flavor drawn from darker spirits.

Instruments

1. Trumpet

2. Resophonic guitar (black-bodied with a bright metal resonator cone)

Tonight is the first time he intends to let the two halves of himself—the musician and the practitioner share the same stage.

Thássala

Status

Wild dragon

Location

Deep swamps of the northern Reach, a short distance from the growing music-town where Orpheus Flowers lives

Year

111 AC

Age & Size

Still considered young by dragon standards, though already formidable. Roughly the size of Sheepstealer, perhaps a little larger through the shoulders and length. Continues to grow steadily. Local legend claims she is of Vhagar's blood—either a distant descendant or the result of a long-forgotten clutch—but no one can prove it.

Appearance

A long, low-slung, aquatic-built dragon the color of deep teal and sea-glass. Her scales are smooth and slightly iridescent, designed more for water than open sky. The head is elongated and crocodilian, packed with rows of needle-sharp teeth. A frilled, spiny crest runs from the crown of her skull down the length of her neck. Her wings are broad and powerful but often kept half-folded when she moves through the water. The tail is long, muscular, and edged with flexible fins and spikes that help her steer and propel herself through the marsh.

She spends most of her time half-submerged. When she does take to the air it is usually at dusk or in heavy fog, her silhouette low and heavy against the sky.

Temperament & Behavior

Wild and unclaimed. No rider has ever successfully approached her, let alone mounted her. She shows no interest in people and has never attacked the nearby village or its livestock. The smallfolk regard her with a mixture of awe and quiet superstition rather than fear.

Thássala keeps to the deepest, wettest parts of the swamp. She uses her fire hot, rolling, and sustained rather than explosive—to heat the water around her preferred resting places. The result is a series of warm, steaming pools and channels that never freeze in winter and stay unusually mild even in the colder months. Fish and certain rare plants thrive there, and the warmer water is one reason the local people leave her in peace.

Abilities

- Excellent swimmer; more comfortable in water than most dragons.

- Fire is dense and heat-heavy rather than wide-ranging. She can keep a large body of water at a near-boil for long periods without exhausting herself. The color of it is a the dragon breath is a dark murky green

- Extremely difficult to track once she submerges. The warm water and heavy mist she creates further hide her presence.

- Has never shown the classic territorial aggression of other wild dragons. She simply wants to be left alone in her swamp.

Local Reputation

The village calls her "the Warming One" or simply "the Green Lady of the Marsh." Travelers and singers who pass through sometimes leave small offerings of fish or salt at the edge of her territory, more out of respect than necessity. She has never taken them, but the offerings are always gone by morning. No one has tried to claim her in living memory.
