Sometimes chasing people wouldn't make them stay in your life.
I'd made the move to follow her out.
To show her I could be patient. To prove to her I cared.
I wanted to care.
She didn't smile. Her eyes held mine in a deadly stare; nothing like the sweet cupcake she'd been inside the room.
"How is he?"
That had been the innocent question she'd found a way to turn into a big deal.
Why did she have to act like I didn't have the right to ask that simple question?
Like I had no right to know.
But I had every bloody right.
The exchange that followed in the next few minutes escalated really quick.
"You don't make it easy, you know?"
"Was it supposed to be easy?" she snapped.
I stifled my anger at her tone and stepped closer.
She peeled away from me like I irritated her—like she couldn't stand me.
"I'm sorry I can't massage your emotions today. Let's wait for next year, and maybe I'll be able to tolerate you a lot more—to give you access to my son."
