Chapter 87 - Chapter 87: Diamonds Hidden in the Ice

The air inside the Orpheus Jewelry Exhibition Hall was unnaturally cold, the kind of cold that crept beneath fabric and settled deep into bone. Even before stepping inside, Dean Thurston had sensed something strange. Gotham in April was cool, yes—but not freezing. Yet every guard stationed around the exhibition wore heavy down jackets beneath their uniforms. Their collars were thick, cuffs padded. It wasn't fashion. It was necessity.

Now, standing in the center of the hall, Dean understood why.

A massive block of crystal-clear ice towered over three meters high in the middle of the room. It shimmered beneath white exhibition lights, refracting beams in cold blue hues that danced across the walls. Embedded at the heart of the ice, like a treasure preserved in time itself, was the legendary Hope Blue Diamond.

The diamond glowed.

It wasn't merely reflective brilliance. It felt alive.

Cold air hummed from concealed chillers installed along the walls. The temperature wasn't quite freezing, but it was close—cold enough to preserve the ice for hours, possibly days. The entire exhibition room was barely ten square meters, making the towering ice structure feel even more overwhelming.

And this was where Kaito Kid had declared he would strike.

---

The Calling Card

Barbara Gordon stood confidently before Director Orff and Biska of the Smithsonian Museum. Her red hair framed her face as she explained calmly,

"Kaito Kid's calling card referenced Tarot symbolism. Specifically, The Star and The Fool."

Dean admired the way she spoke—not arrogantly, but with quiet certainty.

Brock leaned against the wall, muttering under his breath. "Kids these days…"

Dick Grayson crossed his arms proudly. "Told you."

Jim Gordon, Commissioner of the GCPD, was less amused.

"Barbara," he warned, his voice firm but strained, "you promised not to interfere."

"I promised not to interfere with official operations," Barbara corrected smoothly. "I never promised not to analyze patterns."

Dean couldn't help but smile slightly. She was precise—like a lawyer building her case.

Barbara continued.

"The Tarot reference suggests transformation and unexpected movement. Kaito Kid is signaling that he won't simply steal the diamond—he'll change the environment around it."

Director Orff frowned. "Change… the environment?"

Dean finally stepped forward.

"The ice," he said quietly.

Everyone turned to him.

"If I were a magician," Dean continued, "and I wanted to steal a diamond sealed inside ice, I wouldn't break the ice. I'd make the ice disappear."

Silence fell over the room.

Biska's bodyguard—a tall woman in tactical gear and sunglasses—shifted slightly but said nothing.

Jim's expression darkened. "Explain."

Dean walked closer to the ice block, studying it carefully.

"It's too clean," he murmured. "No air bubbles. Perfect clarity. That means this wasn't frozen quickly. It was constructed carefully."

"And?" Jim pressed.

"And that means the ice itself is part of the illusion."

---

The Cold Wind

Dean remembered the cold wind he had felt at the entrance. It wasn't just chill—it was directional.

He glanced toward the ventilation system.

"What if the temperature suddenly rises?" he asked.

Director Orff blinked. "Impossible. The chillers are industrial-grade."

"Industrial-grade machines fail," Dean replied calmly. "Or they get sabotaged."

Barbara nodded, following his thought.

"Kaito Kid's card mentioned 'when the star meets the rising dawn.' That's sunrise."

Dick snapped his fingers. "Light. Heat. Reflection."

Jim looked back at the diamond frozen in its icy prison.

"You're suggesting he plans to melt the ice in plain sight?"

Dean shook his head.

"No. That would take too long."

He paused.

"Unless the ice is hollow."

---

The Realization

Dean stepped closer, ignoring the biting cold that slipped beneath his gloves. He squinted, focusing not on the diamond—but on the ice surrounding it.

And there it was.

A faint seam.

Nearly invisible.

Barbara inhaled sharply when she saw it too.

"It's two layers."

Director Orff stepped forward in alarm. "What?"

Dean spoke calmly.

"The outer ice is thick and solid. But the core—where the diamond is—might not be fully fused. If someone knew exactly where to apply pressure…"

Dick finished the sentence.

"…they could extract the diamond without shattering the entire block."

Jim turned slowly toward Biska.

"Was this ice prepared in Gotham?"

Biska hesitated.

"It was transported from our controlled facility."

Dean's eyes narrowed slightly.

Transported.

Meaning opportunity.

---

Suspicion in the Ice

The tactical bodyguard shifted her stance subtly.

Dean noticed.

He had performed enough stage magic to recognize tension in posture.

He leaned toward Dick and whispered, "Watch her hands."

Dick nodded.

Jim folded his arms. "Even if what you're saying is true, how would he get close enough?"

Barbara answered instantly.

"By becoming someone who's already here."

The implication hung heavy in the freezing air.

Kaito Kid was famous for disguises.

And the exhibition hall was small.

Very small.

If one person inside wasn't who they claimed to be…

The chill suddenly felt less like temperature and more like danger.

---

The Smithsonian Representative

Dean's gaze moved subtly between Biska and the bodyguard.

The bodyguard's tactical outfit was practical, but her boots were too clean.

Too polished.

Security boots collected scuffs.

Those had none.

He stepped casually to the side.

"Miss," he said politely to the bodyguard, "may I ask—did you inspect the ventilation system personally?"

Her head tilted slightly.

"My job is to protect the asset."

Her voice was calm. Neutral.

Too neutral.

Dick leaned closer to Dean. "You think?"

Dean didn't answer.

Instead, he looked back at the diamond.

Then at the chillers.

Then at the lighting above.

And suddenly—

He smiled faintly.

---

The Hidden Trick

"Kaito Kid doesn't need to melt the ice," Dean said clearly. "He needs to crack the illusion."

Everyone looked at him again.

"The outer layer of ice is real. The inner core is likely shaped separately and inserted. If the temperature shifts even slightly, microfractures form between layers."

Director Orff paled. "Are you saying the diamond could drop out?"

"Or be slid out," Barbara added.

Jim's jaw tightened.

"And if someone inside the hall creates a sudden temperature imbalance," Dean finished, "the seam will weaken."

Silence.

Then Brock muttered, "You're telling me the whole block is a magic trick?"

Dean shrugged lightly.

"We're in Gotham."

---

Pressure Builds

Jim stepped closer to the bodyguard.

"Remove the sunglasses."

A long pause.

Then—

She smiled.

And in that moment, Dean knew.

The smile was wrong.

Too theatrical.

Too confident.

The woman slowly reached up—

But instead of removing her glasses—

She flicked her wrist.

A flash of light burst across the room.

Smoke exploded outward.

Dick shouted.

Barbara grabbed Jim's arm.

Brock lunged forward.

And through the chaos—

A laugh echoed.

Clear.

Playful.

Mocking.

"Kaito Kid!" Jim roared.

---

The Ice Shatters

The chillers abruptly shut down.

The temperature began rising instantly.

Condensation formed along the ice.

Tiny cracks spiderwebbed across the surface.

Dean moved fast.

"Don't touch it!" he shouted.

But it was too late.

The inner seam split open with a sharp crack.

The diamond dropped—

Only to vanish in midair.

The smoke began clearing.

And standing atop the massive ice block—

Cloaked in white, cape fluttering—

Was Kaito Kid himself.

He tipped his hat.

"Thank you for warming the stage for me."

Jim aimed his gun upward.

"Drop it!"

Kaito Kid held up his hands dramatically.

"But Commissioner, I haven't even taken it yet."

Dean's eyes widened.

He looked at the ice.

Then at Kaito Kid's empty hands.

Then—

Behind him.

The diamond wasn't in the smoke.

It wasn't in the ice.

It wasn't in Kid's hands.

It was—

---

Hidden in Plain Sight

Dean's gaze snapped to the floor.

Water pooled beneath the melting ice.

And floating within that shallow water—

A perfect reflection.

He understood instantly.

"Kaito Kid never intended to take the real diamond," Dean said sharply.

Everyone froze.

"The one inside the ice was a decoy."

Barbara gasped.

Director Orff staggered back.

Jim's eyes burned with fury.

Kaito Kid laughed softly.

"Bravo, young magician."

The cloaked thief flipped backward off the ice block.

"But the true star always shines elsewhere."

He threw down another flash bomb.

When the smoke cleared—

He was gone.

And so—

Was the real Hope Blue Diamond.

---

Aftermath in the Cold

The ice block continued cracking as the temperature normalized.

Brock swore loudly.

Director Orff looked near collapse.

Biska whispered, "Impossible…"

Jim turned slowly toward Barbara, Dick, and Dean.

"Not a word," he muttered.

But there was no anger in his voice now.

Only reluctant admiration.

Dean folded his arms thoughtfully.

"He switched it before tonight."

Barbara nodded slowly.

"During transport."

Dick exhaled. "So we were guarding an illusion the whole time."

Dean glanced at the melting ice.

"Kaito Kid wanted us to focus on the trick."

Jim stared at the empty pedestal where the real diamond should have been displayed originally.

"He always does."

---

A Silent Promise

As officers flooded the exhibition hall and alarms echoed through Gotham's streets, Dean felt something unexpected.

Excitement.

Challenge.

This wasn't just a theft.

It was a duel.

A battle of minds.

Barbara looked at him.

"You enjoyed that, didn't you?"

Dean smirked faintly.

"A little."

Dick laughed.

"Welcome to Gotham."

Outside, dawn's first light crept over the skyline.

Somewhere above—

A white figure glided across the rooftops.

And in his hand—

The Hope Blue Diamond sparkled brilliantly against the rising sun.

But beneath that sparkle—

A new rivalry had begun.

And Dean Thurston knew one thing for certain.

Next time… the trick would not succeed.
