Chapter 41 - Chapter 41: THE SANCTUARY

Chapter 41: THE SANCTUARY

Morning revealed what darkness had hidden.

The sanctuary sprawled across the valley floor in a pattern that made strategic sense once I studied it properly. The main house anchored the center, with training grounds to the east, gardens and greenhouses to the south, and what looked like alchemical workshops to the north. Everything was positioned for defensive coverage—clear sight lines, multiple fallback positions, chokepoints where a small force could hold against a larger one.

Yennefer didn't just pick this place for the wards. She picked it because it could be defended.

[LOCATION ASSESSMENT: COMPLETE]

[DEFENSIVE VALUE: HIGH]

[RESOURCE ACCESS: MODERATE]

I stood at my window, cataloging the layout while the rest of the sanctuary came to life around me. Staff moved between buildings with practiced purpose. Smoke rose from multiple chimneys. The sounds of a functioning community drifted through the morning air.

A knock at my door.

"Cole." Yennefer's voice, clipped and businesslike despite the early hour. "Orientation in twenty minutes. Main hall."

"I'll be there."

Twenty minutes gave me time to wash, dress, and grab something from the kitchens—fresh bread and dried meat that tasted better than anything we'd had on the road. The staff member who served me didn't meet my eyes, but she wasn't afraid either. Just professional.

Everyone here knows how to keep secrets. That's probably why they're still alive.

The main hall had been transformed from last night's war room into something resembling a classroom. Maps still covered the walls, but now they showed different territories—political boundaries, magical concentrations, troop movements. Yennefer stood at the central table, fresh documents spread before her. Geralt occupied a chair in the corner, his presence more observer than participant.

Ciri arrived moments after I did, still yawning but clearly more rested than she'd been in days. The Link confirmed it—her emotional state had stabilized overnight, the frantic fear fading into something more manageable.

"Good." Yennefer wasted no time. "First, the basics. This sanctuary operates independently of any political structure. The Lodge doesn't know it exists. Nilfgaard's intelligence services have no record of it. That anonymity is our greatest asset, and protecting it is everyone's priority."

She gestured to the maps.

"The staff here—twelve in total—are bound through contracts I've held for decades. They provide support, not combat capability. Security is our responsibility."

"Patrol rotations?" I asked.

"Unnecessary inside the wards. The magical barrier alerts me to any significant breach. Outside..." She paused. "We don't go outside unless absolutely necessary. Every trip risks exposure."

A prison and a sanctuary in one.

"Training structure." Yennefer moved to a schedule pinned to the wall. "Mornings: magical education. Ciri's primary focus, but Cole will attend as well—his Nullification needs theoretical grounding."

"Afternoons," Geralt spoke up, "combat. Both of you. Different focuses, but you'll train together when coordination matters."

"Evenings are for theory, research, and rest." Yennefer's gaze swept across us. "Any questions?"

"How long do we have?" Ciri's voice was steady, but I felt her anxiety through the Link.

"Unknown. The Hunt will search for months before considering broader approaches. The Lodge might accelerate things, depending on which faction controls their current priorities." Yennefer's expression didn't change. "My best estimate: six to eight weeks of relative safety. Possibly more if we're fortunate."

Six weeks to prepare for dimensional hunters and political scheming. No pressure.

[QUEST UPDATE: SANCTUARY TRAINING]

[ESTIMATED DURATION: 6-8 WEEKS]

[PRIORITY: MAXIMUM DEVELOPMENT]

"There's something else." Yennefer's tone shifted. "Context you need, Cole, that the others already understand."

I straightened. "I'm listening."

"The Lodge of Sorceresses is not your ally." She let that settle before continuing. "They view Ciri as a resource—her bloodline, her power, her political value. Several factions within the Lodge would see her controlled, married off to appropriate nobility, or worse."

"I'm aware of their reputation."

"Reputation doesn't capture it. Philippa Eilhart would sacrifice any of us without hesitation if it advanced her goals. Francesca Findabair views Elder Blood as elven heritage to be reclaimed. Even the moderates see Ciri as a piece on a board, not a person with agency."

Ciri's jaw tightened. Old anger at being treated as currency rather than individual.

"Then why work with any of them?" I asked.

"Because the alternative is facing the Hunt alone." Yennefer's voice carried the weight of decades navigating impossible choices. "The Lodge has resources, intelligence, combat capability. We may need them eventually. But we'll deal with them on our terms, not theirs."

"And Nilfgaard?"

"The Empire wants Ciri for succession—a claim to the Northern kingdoms through marriage or force. Emperor Emhyr has been hunting her since she was a child." Yennefer's gaze moved to Ciri. "He's her father, biologically. That complicates the politics considerably."

I processed that revelation. Ciri's father was the Emperor of Nilfgaard. The man trying to conquer the North was hunting his own daughter.

This world's family dynamics make mine look simple.

"Nilfgaardian intelligence operates everywhere," Yennefer continued. "They have mages, spies, military resources beyond what the North can match. If they locate us, they'll come in force."

"So we're hiding from dimensional hunters, power-hungry sorceresses, and an empire." I kept my voice level. "Anyone else?"

"Various bounty hunters, religious fanatics who view Elder Blood as abomination, and the occasional independent mage seeking to harness Ciri's power for personal gain." Yennefer almost smiled. "Welcome to our reality."

[THREAT ASSESSMENT UPDATED]

[WILD HUNT: ACTIVE SEARCH]

[LODGE OF SORCERESSES: POLITICAL THREAT]

[NILFGAARDIAN EMPIRE: ACTIVE HUNT]

[MISCELLANEOUS: ONGOING]

The briefing continued for another hour—specific names, known locations, alliance structures that shifted like sand. By the end, my head was spinning with information that would take weeks to fully process.

But I had weeks. Maybe.

Night found me walking the perimeter.

Not because the wards needed checking—Yennefer had made that clear. But because movement helped me think, and I had much to think about.

The sanctuary grounds were beautiful under starlight. Gardens that should have been dormant showed signs of magical cultivation. The training grounds gleamed with equipment that looked ancient but well-maintained. The alchemical workshops hummed with residual energy even at this hour.

The Ciri-Link pulsed slow and steady. She was sleeping—finally, properly sleeping—and for the first time in weeks, her dreams weren't touched by fear.

This is what we're fighting for. Moments of peace in between the chaos.

I paused at a fountain in the garden's center. Water flowed despite the winter cold, clearly enchanted to resist freezing. I let my hand trail through the current, feeling the magic that kept it moving.

Forty years of preparation. Yennefer built this place to survive exactly what we're facing.

Respect for the sorceress deepened. She was calculating, politically ruthless, and occasionally terrifying. But she protected her own with the same fierce dedication I felt toward Ciri.

We could work with that.

[SANCTUARY ASSESSMENT: ADEQUATE]

[TRAINING POTENTIAL: HIGH]

[TIME REMAINING: UNCERTAIN]

The stars wheeled overhead as I completed my circuit. Tomorrow, the real work would begin. Magical theory, combat training, the endless process of becoming strong enough to face what was coming.

Tonight, I let myself hope.

Ciri's heartbeat echoed through the Link, steady and peaceful.

We had time.
