Chapter 38: THE RECIPE TEASE
The lab was quiet at 9 PM.
I sat at my workstation, running the final analysis on a protein folding experiment that had consumed most of my afternoon. The results were good—another incremental improvement in my delivery efficiency protocol, another step toward the publication that Dr. Marsh had hinted might interest Nature.
The work had become comfortable. Routine, even. The kind of productive flow state that made hours disappear.
[EXPERIMENT COMPLETE. EFFICIENCY IMPROVEMENT: 3.2% OVER PREVIOUS ITERATION. CUMULATIVE IMPROVEMENT: 52% FROM BASELINE. RESEARCH MILESTONE ACHIEVED.]
I nodded at the notification, already preparing to save the data and call it a night.
Then the second notification appeared.
[EXPERIENCE THRESHOLD REACHED. LEVEL UP: 8 → 9. +10 IQ RESERVE (PERMANENT). +1 BASE IQ. MILESTONE PREVIEW UNLOCKED.]
Level nine. I'd been expecting the level-up—the accumulated research progress and social achievements had been building toward it for weeks. But the "milestone preview" was new.
[LEVEL 15 MILESTONE REWARD: RECIPE UNLOCK — NZT-48. COGNITIVE ENHANCEMENT COMPOUND. SYNTHESIS PARAMETERS: CLASSIFIED UNTIL UNLOCK. PRELIMINARY DATA: RARE MATERIALS REQUIRED. SIGNIFICANT RESOURCES NECESSARY. CONTROLLED SYNTHESIS ENVIRONMENT RECOMMENDED.]
My heart rate spiked.
NZT-48. The Limitless pill. The cognitive enhancement that had defined an entire universe of fiction—perfect recall, perfect connection, the ability to use every part of your brain at maximum efficiency.
In my reach.
I sat very still, processing the implications.
The System had always hinted at milestone rewards—special unlocks tied to level achievements. But I hadn't known what Level 15 would offer. Now I did.
I can make NZT.
The thought was intoxicating. With NZT, the cover problems would become irrelevant. I could process information at speeds that would explain any apparent expertise. I could solve problems that seemed impossible, make connections that defied normal cognition.
I could become something more than human.
[ADVISORY: HOST EXHIBITING ELEVATED STRESS RESPONSE. DOPAMINE AND NOREPINEPHRINE LEVELS SUGGEST ANTICIPATORY FIXATION. RECOMMEND CAREFUL MONITORING FOR OBSESSIVE PATTERNS.]
"System." I spoke aloud in the empty lab. "What's the timeline to Level 15?"
[PROJECTION: AT CURRENT PROGRESSION RATE, LEVEL 15 ACHIEVABLE IN APPROXIMATELY 12-14 WEEKS. ACCELERATED PROGRESSION AVAILABLE THROUGH INCREASED MISSION COMPLETION, RESEARCH MILESTONES, AND SOCIAL ACHIEVEMENTS. CAUTION: ACCELERATION CORRELATES WITH INCREASED NOTORIETY RISK.]
Three months. Maybe less if I pushed.
But pushing meant attention. More achievements, more visibility, more people noticing the suspicious acceleration of Nathan Cole's capabilities.
"What are the synthesis requirements? Detailed."
[CLASSIFIED UNTIL UNLOCK. PRELIMINARY INDICATORS: 7 COMPOUNDS REQUIRED. 3 CLASSIFIED AS CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES. 2 REQUIRE SPECIALIZED SUPPLIERS. SYNTHESIS TIME: APPROXIMATELY 8 WEEKS. BATCH YIELD: 20 PILLS. TOTAL ESTIMATED COST: SUBSTANTIAL.]
Controlled substances. Specialized suppliers. Substantial costs.
Even when I unlocked the recipe, actually making NZT would be another challenge entirely. This wasn't going to be simple.
Good. Simple things don't usually have lasting value.
I saved my experiment data, shut down the workstation, and gathered my things. The lab felt different now—charged with possibility, every surface a reminder of the goal I was working toward.
Sleep didn't come easily.
I lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind racing through calculations and contingencies. The NZT recipe. Level 15. The obstacles between here and there.
Around 2 AM, I finally drifted off.
The dream was vivid.
I stood in a lab—not my current one, but something larger, more advanced. A single pill sat on the counter in front of me. Small. White. Unassuming.
I picked it up. Swallowed it.
The effect was instantaneous. The world sharpened. Every detail became significant. I could see the connections between everything—the molecular structure of the air, the patterns in the ceiling tiles, the relationships between every piece of information I'd ever absorbed.
I understood. Everything. All at once.
It was beautiful.
It was terrifying.
I woke at 3 AM, heart pounding, sheets damp with sweat.
[SLEEP PATTERN DISRUPTED. DREAM CONTENT: GOAL-ORIENTED VISUALIZATION. PSYCHOLOGICAL STATE: ELEVATED ANTICIPATION WITH ANXIETY COMPONENTS.]
The System's clinical assessment didn't capture what I was feeling.
Power was seductive. I'd known that intellectually, but now I understood it viscerally. The NZT goal had shifted from abstract ambition to concrete desire—something I wanted not just strategically, but desperately.
That's dangerous.
I forced myself to think about other things. Leslie. The friends who'd gathered at my presentation. The life I was building that had nothing to do with cognitive enhancement.
The NZT wasn't the goal. The life was the goal. NZT was just a tool—a potentially powerful one, but a tool nonetheless.
[OBSERVATION: HOST ENGAGING IN DELIBERATE COGNITIVE REFRAMING. ATTEMPTING TO CONTEXTUALIZE MILESTONE GOAL WITHIN BROADER VALUE STRUCTURE. RECOMMEND CONTINUED SELF-MONITORING.]
I didn't sleep again that night.
But by morning, I'd made a decision.
Steady progression. Maintain cover. Reach Level 15 through sustainable effort rather than desperate acceleration.
The NZT would come. When it did, I'd be ready.
Until then, I had a life to live.
