"How am I supposed to ignore it?" I asked, my voice sharper than I intended. "You let her walk into your space whenever she wants. You let people call her your fiancée. And you stand there like it has nothing to do with you. Are you convincing yourself, or are you trying to convince me? What's the point of all this, Ashton?"
He held my gaze for a moment, then suddenly laughed, low and careless. "And what about you? You let John fuss over you, bring you things, talk about the past like it still matters. Why is that acceptable, but Rebecca isn't?"
The words hit hard.
I stood up too fast, the room tilting for a second. My balance slipped, and instinctively, he reached for me. I shoved his hand away at once. "Don't touch me."
I walked straight for the door. The tension in my chest felt tight, restless, like something inside me wanted to push free.
