Chapter 11 - A mother's choice

The clock finally struck 6 p.m.

At last the day was over.

I could finally get the hell out of here.

I took the elevator to the bottom floor with a bunch of papers and keys in hand.

How on earth was I going to make my way back home?

"Ms. Nyla, I've been assigned to drive you tonight." A young French-looking guy approached.

He looked really hot and was dressed in an expensive suit.

Even their drivers looked fancy.

I definitely didn't fit in here.

I handed over keys to him without asking further questions.

I had learned to stop questioning things here.

"Where would you like me to take you?" He asked.

"I need to get to another city this evening. Something about a private jet. HR mentioned something about a private jet. Could you take me there?"

" Sure thing", he replied

"Right this way," he led me towards the car and we both got in and shut the door.

I caught a glimpse of Jade, the rude intern, and some of her co-workers from the elevator this morning. They seemed to be having a good laugh about something. She was probably spreading rumors about me , but I didn't have time to worry about that. I had to get to Karen and set things right.

The plane ride took less than an hour.

Soon enough I was back at the place I had learned to call home these past five years.

I knocked on the door softly and waited for it to open to reveal Karen. She looked half-tired, hair was a mess and eyes looked like they hadn't slept for hours.

"Mommy", a little voice echoed from behind her, running towards me. "Baby," I echoed back lifting him up for a big hug.

"You made it" Karen sighed dryly, a look of relief on her face.

"I'm so sorry I took so long to come back. Things didn't go as expected".

She looked at me. I couldn't tell if she was s

Mad or just genuinely tired.

"Well, I hope it was worth it, because the landlord came in today. We've got till the end of the week to pay up or pack up."

"End of the week?" I screamed.

It was Friday already. The weekend was tomorrow. How on earth was he expecting us to come up with that much money?.

"What are we going to do?" She asked.

Think Nyla, solution.

"You could move to New York with me and Ryan, I got the job" I announced.

"You're moving to New York?"

She said not as excited as I hoped she would have been.

"Yeah, I got the job and it comes with a house, car and everything,"

"Wow, so you just up and decided to move to New York without telling me,"

"I didn't plan it. It was just so unexpected. It happened so fast," I tried to explain.

"You can just pack your pretty little bags and go live a big shot life I New York, I need to get some sleep , I have a busy day of work ahead of me" She calmly replied walking away.

She wasn't pissed or at least I hoped she wasn't.

This wasn't how I expected things to go I sighed.

I stared at my beautiful baby boy who had now fallen asleep softly on the sofa.

He deserved much better than this rundown apartment.

I carried him to the room, laid him on my bed, kissed his sleepy head, sat down beside him, and played with his hair.

I finally had a chance to give him a better life and I knew it was probably going to hurt Karen but I had to do it.

I made a call to Leah,

"Could you please help me with the rent of this month, I promise to pay you back as soon as I get paid at my new job"

"So you decided to take it" she screamed out in excitement.

I was really exhausted and my tummy seemed to finally remember that we were hungry.

"I promise to fill you in when I get back, I just need this one thing really quickly".

The call came to an end and the money was sent.

I waked into the kitchen to make dinner for myself but all I could find was a half empty cup of instant coffee powder and stale bread.

I sighed silently, secretly grateful that I could get my baby away from this.

I wish I could do have done the same for Karen but I knew her, she was strong willed and it was too sudden plus she didn't have any opportunities waiting for her in New York.

I couldn't even understand why I had asked her in the first place, who would quit their job to be unemployed and live of the work of other people In a strange city.

No one in their right minds I guess.

I spent a couple of minutes packing up all me and Ryan's stuff, just a bunch of clothes and pictures, it wasnt like I owned anything valuable .

I layed in bed that night on an empty stomach uncertain of what the future held but one thing was for sure,

New York was no longer an option, it was the only way forward
