Since they wanted to harvest a multitude of things and conveniently explore more of this area, they would definitely be gone from early morning until late at night. In the worst-case scenario, they might even have to spend another night in the forest, so they had to prepare a fair amount of food. Naturally, for a forest trek like this, they couldn't use white rice to cook meals; after all, white rice was precious. Eating it occasionally to satisfy a craving was fine, but taking it into the woods was an absolute waste.
