Chapter 73 - What Remains

Smoke swallowed the city.

Dust filled the air.

Everything was quiet.

Too quiet.

— Maxruell's Battlefield —

The ruins were unrecognizable.

Buildings reduced to debris.

Ground cracked open.

At the center—

A figure stood.

Veyron.

Breathing steady.

Body damaged—

Clothes torn—

Blood running down his arm—

But standing.

"…Impressive."

His voice was calm.

But lower than before.

In front of him—

Maxruell knelt.

One knee on the ground.

His shadows—

Gone.

Completely gone.

His body shook slightly.

Breathing uneven.

The red glow in his eyes flickered—

Then dimmed.

"…Tch…"

He tried to stand.

His legs didn't respond.

Veyron stepped closer.

"…You pushed beyond your limit."

A pause.

"And it almost worked."

Maxruell laughed weakly.

"…Almost doesn't count."

Veyron looked down at him.

"…No."

A pause.

"It doesn't."

Silence.

Then—

Veyron turned away.

Maxruell's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…You're not finishing it?"

Veyron stopped.

"…Not yet."

A pause.

"You're still… incomplete."

He glanced back.

"…Killing you now would be a waste."

Maxruell clenched his fist slightly.

"…You talk too much."

Veyron smirked faintly.

"…And you're still not strong enough to stop me."

Then—

He vanished.

Leaving Maxruell alone.

Broken.

— Juvy's Battlefield —

The light faded slowly.

The street was destroyed.

But not completely.

At the center—

Two figures stood.

Juvy…

Still standing.

Breathing steady.

Light flickering gently around her.

Controlled.

Across from her—

Lyra.

Bruised.

Damaged.

But smiling.

"…You win."

Juvy's eyes narrowed slightly.

"…What?"

Lyra laughed softly.

"…Relax."

A pause.

"I'm not dying here."

Juvy didn't lower her guard.

"…Then why stop?"

Lyra tilted her head.

"…Because I've seen enough."

A pause.

"You've reached it."

Juvy's light dimmed slightly.

"…Reached what?"

Lyra smiled.

"…Balance."

Silence.

Then—

Lyra stepped back.

"…You're different from him."

Juvy didn't respond.

"…You won't break."

A pause.

"And that makes you more dangerous."

Juvy's expression hardened.

"…If you're done—leave."

Lyra smiled.

"…Gladly."

She turned.

"…Next time…"

A slight glance back.

"…I won't hold back either."

And just like that—

She disappeared.

Juvy stood alone.

Her light slowly fading.

Her body finally relaxing.

"…I won…"

But her expression didn't change.

"…Did I?"

— High Above —

Mother Cain stood in silence.

Watching both outcomes.

Serah spoke quietly:

"…Different results."

Cain nodded.

"Yes."

Her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Exactly as expected."

One screen showed Maxruell—

Defeated.

Broken.

The other showed Juvy—

Standing.

Evolved.

Serah crossed her arms.

"So she's ahead now."

Cain shook her head slightly.

"…No."

A pause.

"They're simply taking different paths."

Her gaze sharpened.

"But both are progressing."

Maxruell lay back against the rubble.

Staring at the sky.

"…Damn it…"

His hand clenched weakly.

"…Still not enough."

Far away—

Juvy stood under the fading storm.

Looking at her hands.

"…I can do more."

Two outcomes.

Two paths.

One lost.

One stood.

But neither had reached the end.

The war wasn't over.

Not even close.
