Chapter 246 - Chapter 246: Quiet return

The road stretched ahead.

White.

Endless.

Snow falling in slow, steady layers.

The car cut through it quietly.

No rush.

No urgency.

Just the sound of tires against the ground.

Leah sat beside him.

Silent.

Watching.

Her fingers traced the edge of the window.

Cold glass beneath her skin.

"…It's still falling," she murmured.

Izana didn't look away from the road.

"…It will for a while."

A pause.

She leaned her head back.

Eyes soft.

"…Feels different now."

"…Being back?"

She shook her head slightly.

"…No."

A breath.

"…Being with you."

Silence followed.

Not empty.

Full.

His hand shifted.

Resting over hers.

Warm.

Grounding.

"…Good," he said quietly.

The mansion appeared slowly through the snow.

Dark against the white.

Familiar.

Still.

Waiting.

Leah straightened slightly.

"…We're here."

"…We are."

The gates opened.

Slow.

Silent.

The car rolled forward.

Gravel crunching beneath the snow.

The engine stilled.

Everything quiet again.

Neither of them moved right away.

Just a moment.

Breathing.

Letting it settle.

"…Home," she whispered.

"…Home," he echoed.

The doors opened.

Cold air rushed in.

Sharp.

She shivered.

Instinct.

His hand found her again.

"…Come on."

Simple.

Certain.

They stepped out.

Snow underfoot.

Soft crunch with every step.

The world muted around them.

The mansion doors opened before they reached them.

Warm light spilling out.

A figure in the doorway.

Elias.

Still.

Watching.

"…You took your time," he said.

Not cold.

Not sharp.

Just observant.

Izana didn't slow.

"…We arrived."

Leah smiled faintly.

"…We missed this place."

Elias' gaze shifted between them.

Noticing.

Everything.

A pause.

"…I can see that."

Another presence behind him.

Dante.

Leaning against the frame.

Arms crossed.

A faint smirk.

"…Yeah," he said quietly. "…I can see it too."

Leah blinked.

"…See what?"

Dante didn't answer immediately.

Just tilted his head slightly.

Studying.

"…Nothing," he said. "…Just… different."

Izana stepped inside.

Leah with him.

Warmth wrapped around them instantly.

The door closed behind them.

The outside gone.

Just like that.

Snow left behind.

Silence settling inside.

Elias stepped aside.

"…Everything's ready," he said.

Izana nodded once.

"…Good."

Dante's gaze lingered on Leah.

Not uncomfortable.

Just curious.

"…You look happy," he added.

Leah didn't hesitate.

"…I am."

A small pause.

Dante exhaled softly.

"…Good."

Elias turned slightly.

"…You should rest."

Izana's hand brushed Leah's again.

"…We will."

No more questions.

None needed.

They understood enough.

The hallway stretched ahead.

Familiar.

Quiet.

Their footsteps soft against the floor.

Leah walked close to him.

Not touching fully.

But close enough.

"…They noticed," she murmured.

"…Of course they did."

"…You don't mind?"

He glanced at her.

"…No."

A beat.

"…Do you?"

She shook her head.

"…Not really."

A faint smile touched her lips.

"…Feels nice."

"…What does?"

"…Not hiding."

He didn't answer.

Just kept walking.

The bedroom door opened.

The room unchanged.

Exactly as they left it.

The bed neatly made.

Curtains drawn halfway.

Soft light spilling in.

Leah stepped inside first.

Slow.

Taking it in.

"…It's the same," she whispered.

"…It is."

She turned slightly.

"…But it doesn't feel the same."

A pause.

He closed the door behind them.

"…No."

Their bags were set down.

Quietly.

No rush to unpack.

No urgency.

Just presence.

Leah moved toward the bed.

Sat down slowly.

The mattress dipped beneath her.

"…I missed this," she murmured.

"…The bed?"

A small smile.

"…This," she repeated.

He stepped closer.

Close enough to feel the warmth between them.

"…Then stay."

Simple.

She shifted further back onto the bed.

Pulling the blanket loose.

"…Come here."

He didn't hesitate.

Sat behind her.

Pulled her back gently.

Her back against his chest.

Familiar.

Natural.

The blanket wrapped around them both.

Warmth building slowly.

Her hands found his.

Fingers curling around them.

Holding.

"…Better," she whispered.

"…Yeah."

A pause.

Quiet settling in again.

No tension.

No distance.

Just stillness.

"…Movie?" she murmured.

He leaned slightly to the side.

Reaching for the remote.

"…Anything specific?"

She shook her head lightly.

"…Just something soft."

"…Alright."

The screen flickered on.

Light shifting across the room.

Across them.

He adjusted the blanket slightly.

Covering her more.

Without thinking.

She noticed.

Didn't say anything.

Just leaned back a little more.

"…You do that a lot," she murmured.

"…What?"

"…That."

A small pause.

He understood.

"…I know."

The movie started.

Soft sound filling the silence.

Background.

Not important.

Her focus wasn't on it.

Her thumb brushed lightly over his hand.

Slow.

Absent.

"…You're quiet," he said.

"…I'm thinking."

"…About?"

A pause.

"…Us."

He didn't respond right away.

Just listened.

"…It feels different," she added.

"…How?"

"…Closer."

A breath.

"…Like there's nothing in between anymore."

His hand tightened slightly around hers.

Barely noticeable.

"…There isn't."

She exhaled slowly.

"…Good."

The movie played on.

Unnoticed.

Time moving quietly around them.

Her head tilted back slightly.

Resting against him.

His chin lowered just a little.

Close to her hair.

Not touching.

Just there.

"…I like this," she whispered.

"…I know."

"…No noise."

"…No interruptions."

"…Just us."

A pause.

"…Yeah."

Her fingers shifted.

Holding his hand properly now.

Not just resting.

Intentional.

He didn't move it away.

Didn't adjust.

Just let it stay.

The room warmed slowly.

Fireplace crackling somewhere distant in the house.

Faint.

Comforting.

Outside—

Snow continued.

Unseen.

Unheard.

The world smaller now.

Just this room.

Just them.

"…We're really back," she murmured.

"…We are."

"…And everything's the same."

"…Not everything."

She smiled faintly.

"…No."

A pause.

"…Not everything."

Silence again.

But softer now.

Warmer.

He shifted slightly.

Pulling the blanket tighter around her.

Careful.

Without breaking the moment.

She leaned into it.

Accepted it.

Naturally.

"…Don't move," she whispered.

"…I won't."

"…Stay like this."

"…I am."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

The kind that stretches.

Settles.

Becomes something else.

Her breathing slowed.

Even.

Steady.

His matched it.

Without thinking.

Without effort.

"…Iz…"

"…Yeah."

"…We're okay."

Not a question.

A statement.

He didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"…We are."

Simple.

Certain.

She closed her eyes.

Just for a second.

Then opened them again.

"…Good."

The movie kept playing.

Light flickering.

Soft shadows moving along the walls.

Time slipping past unnoticed.

Their hands still together.

Her body relaxed fully now.

No tension left.

No hesitation.

Just calm.

Just warmth.

Just him.

And for now—

That was enough.
