Selene's POV
The drive back from Red Moon took three hours.
Long enough to sit with everything Thane had said. Long enough for the shape of it to settle from raw information into something I could think around rather than just hold.
My mother had been given a document before her mating. By a Council elder who had since died. A legal claim to territory Garrett had been disputing — something old enough and legitimate enough that he couldn't simply override it with force, something that required her cooperation or her absence to neutralize.
She had refused to give it to him.
She had hidden it.
And she had told one person — a man she wasn't sure she could fully trust, on the night before she died — that the way to find it was through the covenant's first witness.
