The Butterfly Estate had long since fallen quiet, the distant hum of night insects blending with the whisper of wind through the trees. The moon hung low and luminous above the courtyard, bathing everything in silver light. Akira sat beneath the engawa, his back resting against a wooden pillar, Mitsuri resting comfortably across his lap.
Her pink-and-green hair was untied tonight, cascading freely over his thighs like silk touched by moonlight. His fingers moved through it absentmindedly, brushing and separating the strands with slow care. Mitsuri's eyes were half-lidded, a soft smile playing on her lips as she enjoyed the simple intimacy.
Akira finally broke the silence, his voice low but steady. "So you don't think it was necessary to tell me that you joined the Demon Slayers? And what did you tell Uncle and Aunty? How did you find me?"
Mitsuri tilted her head slightly, looking up at him with playful defiance. "You really thought you can fight with demons alone and I will stay home, did you?"
Akira let out a quiet sigh, though his fingers never stopped moving through her hair. "I know you would have come with me. That's why I didn't tell you."
He looked down at her then, and whatever teasing edge had lingered in his tone disappeared. His eyes held nothing but affection, fondness, care—and something far rarer. Fear.
It was not fear of demons, nor of death. It was fear of losing her.
Mitsuri saw it instantly. She always had a way of reading him more clearly than anyone else. That was why she waited, trained, and endured until she stood strong enough to earn the title of Hashira before approaching him again.
"I know you fear losing me," she said softly. "But I'm strong. I won't die—"
Akira's free hand rose swiftly and covered her mouth before she could finish.
"Don't you dare say a word."
His tone was calm, but there was iron beneath it. Mitsuri blinked in surprise before laughing against his palm, her eyes curving in delight.
"Sometimes you really are possessive. You know that? And I love it."
Akira's mouth twitched, betraying him. He flicked her forehead lightly.
"Oww." Mitsuri rubbed her forehead, instantly putting on teary eyes that shimmered dramatically in the moonlight.
He knew she was acting.
Still, his hand moved back instinctively, gently massaging the spot he had flicked while his other hand continued combing through her hair. His touch was careful, almost reverent.
"Troublesome girl," Akira muttered under his breath.
Mitsuri's smile widened. "You still like this girl."
He didn't answer immediately, but his fingers lingered longer in her hair than necessary.
Before the moment could deepen further, a deliberate cough cut through the air.
"Well excuse me! I will be interrupting your romance."
Without asking permission, Shinobu stepped forward and gracefully lowered herself onto Akira's other leg, resting her head there as if it had always belonged to her. Her violet eyes gleamed mischievously as she folded her hands over her stomach.
"You still haven't answered to my confession. Till then you are my half-boyfriend."
Akira's mouth twitched again, this time more visibly. "You really are something."
Yet his fingers, almost traitorous in their reflex, slid into Shinobu's short hair, brushing gently through it. She closed her eyes briefly, clearly pleased with the response she pretended not to care about.
"So you girls met before Mitsuri became a Hashira?" Akira asked, glancing between them.
He then looked back at Mitsuri, arching a brow. "You know she proposed to me, right?"
Mitsuri shrugged lazily, entirely unbothered. "Knew that already. But I know no one can take my place."
There was no arrogance in her tone—only certainty.
Shinobu also shrugged, though a faint smirk tugged at her lips. "I'm not the type to plot stealing someone's place. I create my own."
Akira flicked her forehead next.
"Yah, I saw that just now."
Shinobu huffed, rubbing her forehead in exaggerated offense. Mitsuri laughed openly, the sound bright against the quiet night. Even Akira's shoulders relaxed as he let out a faint chuckle.
"You staying there?" Akira asked suddenly, without turning his head.
A few steps away, Kanae stood with her arms crossed, her gentle smile illuminated by moonlight.
"Sharp as always," she said warmly. "I was just thinking whether to disturb the romantic atmosphere or not?"
Akira shook his head. "There is no romance. Just catching up with my childhood friend who decided to become a hunter who hunts demons without asking me or telling me. And a girl who just claimed herself my half girlfriend."
Kanae laughed softly. "Yeah, that's quite an accurate explanation of your situation."
She walked over and sat gracefully near them, careful not to disturb the arrangement of heads occupying Akira's legs.
Mitsuri looked up at him again, eyes sparkling. "So my dear Sun, what are you gonna do?"
Akira leaned back slightly, his expression shifting as the playful warmth faded into thoughtful resolve.
"Nothing much. I will be training Tanjiro in Sun Breathing. The Kamado family will be helping in the Butterfly Estate. And I need to find a way to kill Muzan."
The name hung heavy in the air.
His eyes darkened slightly as he continued, voice lowering. "Now he would be screaming in rage. And will absolutely not leave his Infinite Castle."
Shinobu opened one eye. "You sound certain."
"I am," Akira replied. "He doesn't tolerate threats. Especially not ones he cannot control."
Kanae studied him carefully. "And you believe you've become that threat?"
"I know I have," Akira said without arrogance, only calm certainty. "Sun Breathing resurfacing alone is enough to make him restless."
Mitsuri shifted slightly on his lap, turning so she could look at him more clearly. "You're planning something more than training, aren't you?"
Akira's fingers paused briefly in her hair before resuming their motion.
"I need strength. Not just mine. Tanjiro's potential is immense. If he masters even a fragment of true Sun Breathing, Muzan will feel it."
Shinobu's tone softened slightly. "And you intend to shoulder everything again?"
He glanced down at her. "Not alone."
Mitsuri smiled at that.
Kanae tilted her head thoughtfully. "You've changed, Akira. You still carry the burden, but you're not isolating yourself the way you used to."
Akira looked toward the moon. "Isolation was easier."
"And lonelier," Mitsuri added quietly.
He didn't deny it.
Shinobu shifted slightly, resting more comfortably. "For someone who claims there is no romance, you're awfully gentle."
Akira sighed. "You three are relentless."
Mitsuri grinned. "You love it."
He didn't respond verbally, but the way his fingers continued their absentminded strokes through both their hair betrayed him.
Kanae clasped her hands together. "So the Sun Hashira trains the successor of flame itself. The Love Hashira refuses to be left behind. The Insect Hashira claims half-boyfriend rights. And I… simply observe."
"You're enjoying this too much," Akira said flatly.
"Immensely," Kanae replied.
The wind shifted slightly, rustling Mitsuri's loose hair across Akira's arm. He brushed it back gently, careful and deliberate.
"Mitsuri," he said quietly.
"Hmm?"
"If things turn worse… if Muzan targets those close to me…"
She reached up and tapped his chest lightly. "Then we'll fight. Together. You don't get to decide for me anymore."
Shinobu added calmly, "You may be the Sun, but the rest of us are not candles waiting to be blown out."
Kanae smiled. "We are Hashira, Akira."
He closed his eyes briefly, absorbing their words.
"Troublesome women," he muttered.
Mitsuri laughed. "You still like these troublesome girls."
He allowed himself a faint smile.
"Yes," he admitted quietly. "I do."
The moon continued its silent vigil above them as the four sat together in an unusual but strangely balanced arrangement. Playful teasing lingered, but beneath it was something far steadier—trust, shared resolve, and unspoken devotion.
For now, there was warmth.
Tomorrow, there would be war.
But tonight, beneath the silver sky, the Sun Hashira allowed himself to rest.
