July, Meiji 34 (1901)
Age: Akira & Mitsuri — 11 years, 1 month
---
Dawn arrived before the sun.
That thin, colorless hour when the world still belonged to shadows—and breath carried weight.
Akira stood alone in the clearing behind the houses, bare feet pressing into cool earth. The cicadas were silent. Even the birds waited.
He adjusted the gourd against his chest.
The old one—cracked, repaired, reinforced—had been replaced.
This new gourd was thicker. Heavier. Its surface roughened intentionally, designed to resist expansion longer.
Akira placed a hand over it.
"…Today," he whispered, "we combine them."
Not recklessly.
Not fully.
But for the first time—breathing and form together.
Inside his mind, presence stirred.
"Great Sage: Confirmation. Initiating integrated training phase. Objective—synchronize Total Concentration Breathing with reconstructed Hinokami Kagura movement theory. Warning: physical load will increase non-linearly."
Akira exhaled slowly.
"I know."
He inhaled.
Total Concentration Breathing.
Not rushed.
Not forced.
The air filled him—hot, dense, alive.
His muscles responded instantly, heat spreading from lungs to limbs. Veins tightened, posture straightened, and his awareness sharpened until even the faint sway of grass registered clearly.
Akira raised his wooden sword.
Not in a stance taught by anyone.
But one carved into him through theory, observation, and countless hours of silent repetition.

Hinokami Kagura — First Form: Enbu (Dance)
He moved.
One step.
One turn.
A smooth, circular cut that carried his entire body with it.
The breath did not break.
That alone made his heart pound.
The movement flowed—hips, spine, shoulders—each part aligned with the rhythm of his inhale and exhale. Heat surged through his core, but instead of scattering, it spiraled.
Akira completed the motion and froze.
No pain.
No dizziness.
Only a deep, vibrating warmth in his chest.
"Great Sage: Synchronization successful. Muscular efficiency increased by 41% compared to non-breathing execution. Oxygen consumption stabilized."
Akira swallowed.
"…So this is the foundation."
He didn't continue immediately.
He waited.
Let the breath settle.
Then—
---
Second Form: Hekira no Ten (Blue Heavenly Spiral)
A deeper step.
A sharper rotation.
The gourd creaked.
Akira felt it—pressure building faster than before. His lungs worked harder, ribs expanding under strain.
Control.
He finished the spiral, breath still intact—but his legs trembled faintly.
He stopped.
Immediately.
"Great Sage: Recommendation—halt progression. Current integration limit reached safely."
Akira nodded, chest rising and falling steadily.
Two forms.
That was enough.
Even so—his body hummed like a drawn blade.
By the time Mitsuri arrived, the sun had just begun to peek over the rooftops.
She stopped when she saw him.
Not because he was training.
But because something was different.
Akira stood still, sword lowered, steam rising faintly from his shoulders despite the cool morning air.
"…You look," she searched for the word, "hot."
He blinked. "…Physically?"
She nodded quickly, flustered. "I mean—your breath. It's different."
Akira relaxed his breathing slightly. "I started combining it."
Her eyes widened. "Already?"
"Carefully."
She walked closer, studying him the way she always did—quietly, deeply. "It feels… heavier. Like the air's bending around you."
He smiled faintly. "You always notice."
Mitsuri hugged her arms around herself, gaze drifting to the gourd. "Did it hurt?"
"No," he said honestly. "But it would if I pushed."
That reassured her.
She sat nearby, watching as Akira shifted his training.
No more forms.
Now—gourd training.
He tightened the strap.
Inhaled.
Total Concentration—high output.
The gourd screamed.
Loud.
Sharp.
Akira held the breath—longer than ever before.
Muscles locked.
Heart thundered.
His vision narrowed—but did not fade.
"Great Sage: Lung capacity adaptation accelerating. Micro-damage detected—within acceptable growth parameters. Maintain for two more counts."
Akira obeyed.
Then released.
The gourd survived.
Barely.
He laughed quietly, breath fogging the air. "…Still alive."
Mitsuri clapped without thinking—then covered her mouth. "S-sorry!"
He grinned. "It's fine."
They rested together afterward, sitting in the grass.
Mitsuri practiced her own breathing—lighter, more elastic, copying only the idea of Akira's rhythm, not the structure. Her body bent and flowed naturally, movements unconsciously refined.
Akira noticed—but said nothing.
Letting it grow on its own.
As the sun rose fully, Akira stood, stretching.
His body felt heavier.
Stronger.
Closer to balance.
"Great Sage: Assessment—growth phase accelerating as requested. However, sustained discipline remains critical. You are approaching a threshold where your body will no longer forgive carelessness."
Akira looked at Mitsuri—laughing softly as she chased a butterfly through the clearing.
"…I know," he thought.
And he would not cross that line alone.
