Chapter 287 - Chapter 287: The Junkyard Director

Some things only reveal their true nature through comparison.

Makoto had totally been gaslighting Ōtsutsuki Toneri earlier, but the core logic of his argument was actually sound.

Especially the phrase, "Even if we take ten thousand steps back."

It made the moon boy realize that even if they genuinely had a duty to monitor the Shinobi World, they forfeited any right to judge humanity the second they genocided their own clan.

This is the key difference between Makoto's Talk-no-Jutsu and Naruto's.

Makoto's words are rooted in logic.

Even when fabricating total bullshit stories, he sticks to a logical framework.

Naruto's Talk-no-Jutsu, on the other hand, went something like this:

Naruto: You're a Penguin Fucker, you're a Penguin Fucker, you're a Penguin Fucker, who are you?!

Enemy: I... I'm your enemy! I'm going to destroy the Shinobi World!

Naruto: Wrong! You're a Penguin Fucker, you're a Penguin Fucker, you're a Penguin Fucker, who are you?!

Enemy: I... I... I'm a Penguin Fucker! Squawk, squawk!

Literally like that.

It was precisely because Naruto lacked basic logic, forgetting his own promises the moment they left his lips, that his version of the technique was basically just loud brainwashing.

The key difference lay in the aftermath: those who had been swayed by Makoto's silver tongue, given a second chance to choose again, would still choose Makoto.

Those who succumbed to Naruto's Talk-no-Jutsu, however, were a totally different, depressing story.

If Nagato had foreseen that Naruto would bring zero peace and zero economic prosperity to the Hidden Rain Village after his death, he would have never yielded to the blonde kid's speech.

Even on the verge of death, he would have skipped using Rinne Rebirth to revive Konoha, preferring to just die out of spite.

Or he could have just used it to resurrect Madara Uchiha and watched the world burn.

Konan wouldn't have needed to waste 600 Billion Explosive Tags defending Nagato's corpse from the Masked Man.

Just like in the Limited Tsukuyomi universe, she could have used those tags to wipedout the Five Great Shinobi Villages instead.

Since a win-win scenario was impossible, a lose-lose outcome would have been way better than just letting the enemy win for free.

"What... what am I supposed to do now?" Toneri asked, lifting his wet, eyeless head in pure confusion.

At this vulnerable moment, if Makoto had simply said, 'Then go commit suicide,' Toneri would have slit his own throat without a second thought, returning to the heavens.

Conversely, if Makoto had reached out and declared, 'The Moon serves as Earth's first line of defense against the Otsutsuki invasion. Toneri, do you dare assume the mantle of its guardian?' Toneri would have sworn lifelong fealty on the spot.

Yet Makoto did neither.

Toneri had already been thoroughly mind-broken, letting him die now would be a huge waste of free labor.

"Would you be interested in becoming an environmental ambassador?"

"?"

"The waste generated by the Shinobi World's industrial development will continuously release toxic substances into our land. That's why we transfer our raw sewage to the Moon—to protect Mother Nature."

"Similarly, as Earth's satellite, the Moon would be the Ōtsutsuki Clan's first point of contact if they ever invade from the stars. Your new task would be to immediately inform us upon their arrival, allowing us to prep our defenses. Don't act on your own, and refrain from doing anything stupid."

"Do you understand? Can you handle this job?"

Makoto stood safely on the shore, addressing Toneri calmly.

He had zero desire to shake hands with the guy.

Even after being cleansed by the hot spring, the moon prince still smelled like a dry shit.

"The Ōtsutsuki Clan? Invading the Shinobi World?" Toneri asked, his voice filled with dread.

"That's right. The true Ōtsutsuki Clan," Makoto confirmed. "Have you made your decision? You are a descendant of Hamura, bearing half-mortal blood and half-Otsutsuki blood. Will you fight for the mortals of Earth, or serve as a lapdog for the pure Ōtsutsuki in the future?"

"..."

Toneri hesitated.

He wasn't debating becoming a lapdog, but rather...

"Can the Shinobi World truly withstand an invasion from them? According to our legend, the Shinobi World is ultimately just a byproduct of a branch sent out by the main clan..."

"Dead wrong," Makoto interrupted sharply. "The emergence of the Tenseigan requires both the Ōtsutsuki Clan's chakra and a Byakugan with sufficiently high genetic purity, correct?"

"If the condition were truly that simple, then before your moon clan was wiped out by incest, everyone except you should have unlocked the Tenseigan. But one of the conditions isn't just 'a Byakugan.' It's specifically the Byakugan of the Hyuga Clan on Earth, isn't it?"

"Yes."

"Then haven't you ever wondered why? Why did the Otsutsuki need to plunder the Shinobi World's power? Why can only the Byakugan of the Hyuga Clan, who remained on Earth and whose bloodline appears diluted by human DNA, awaken the true Tenseigan?

"Because the power of the Shinobi World is the key. The Ōtsutsuki Clan fears us not because we are gods, but because we are mortals with limitless potential."

"..."

Toneri was deeply shaken!

He had been brainwashed to take pride in his bloodline.

Yet precisely because of this, the thought of facing the real Ōtsutsuki stirred deep feelings of genetic inferiority within him.

But now Makoto was dropping facts, telling him that what truly mattered wasn't the Otsutsuki DNA, but the power of the Shinobi World—the power of humanity!

"Here, catch. I've got some onboarding gear for you."

Makoto tossed a laminated card and a chunky ring over the water to Toneri.

"What's this?"

Toneri caught the card and ran his sensitive fingers over it, feeling the braille-like inscription.

"This is an old general from a classic novel, known by the single name 'Zhong,' meaning 'Loyalty.' You should know that if you encounter the main Ōtsutsuki Clan, as long as you don't activate this teleportation portal, it will take them a considerable amount of time to fly down to Earth.

"That time will be enough for you to notify us, allowing the Shinobi World to prepare. I hope you can uphold this single word: 'Loyalty.' As for the ring, it's a communication device."

"Oh, right, this old general also had a classic, badass line: 'I've only ever shot others, I've never been shot myself,'" Makoto quoted.

"'I've only ever been Toneri?' I understand."

Toneri misinterpreted the quote through his broken brain, carefully stowing the card and ring away in his robes.

He took a deep, dramatic breath and dove straight back down into the septic depths of the dimensional pool.

"Huh? Why did he just leave?"

Hanabi, who had tagged along, was totally bewildered to see the guy who had been destined to try and gouge out her eyes just suddenly retreat to the moon.

After all, she was standing right next to Makoto!

'Doesn't he have any ambition? Come and try to gouge my eyes out, you coward!'

"He's in a hurry to get back and clock in as the new landfill director. He probably wants to remodel his palace to make it better for storing our garbage," Makoto said, glancing sideways at Kakashi.

"Once you get back to the village, you'll need to file a report with Tsunade and have her send a real estate team to develop this cave."

The ring he'd tossed to Toneri originally belonged to Zetsu.

The Akatsuki used these rings for their holographic meetings.

Makoto figured he'd test if the signal even reached the Moon.

As for Zetsu? The White Zetsu clones came with their own biological hive-mind network anyway.

Why would they need chunky rings for communication?

"That's it? It's over?"

Kakashi stared blankly at the rippling surface of the hot spring where the moon prince had disappeared.

He had assumed playing garbage man for a week was just a tactical preliminary step.

He honestly thought the real S-rank mission was to wage a glorious war against the Ōtsutsuki on the Moon.

But instead...

Turns out he had been the main DPS this whole time, contributing the most combat value by giving the moon a ton of shit?
