Chapter 84 - Beneath The Lantern Sky

The festival continued long into the night.

Music echoed through the streets.

The laughter of families and friends filled the air.

Lanterns floated endlessly into the heavens, becoming tiny stars against the dark sky.

Yet despite all the excitement surrounding them—

Chaos Tenno and Rowena remained on the bridge.

Neither seemed eager to leave.

Neither wanted the night to end.

The river below reflected thousands of colors.

Gold.

Blue.

Silver.

Purple.

Each lantern painted the water with a different shade of light.

For a while neither spoke.

Not because they had nothing to say.

But because the silence felt comfortable.

Peaceful.

The kind of silence only shared between people who truly enjoyed each other's company.

Rowena rested her arms against the bridge railing.

Her eyes followed the drifting lanterns.

A small smile appeared on her face.

Rowena Graves:

"You know…"

Chaos Tenno glanced toward her.

Chaos Tenno:

"What?"

Rowena chuckled softly.

Rowena Graves:

"If someone had told me years ago that we'd be standing here together at a festival…"

She shook her head.

Rowena Graves:

"I would've called them crazy."

Chaos Tenno laughed.

Chaos Tenno:

"That's fair."

Rowena raised an eyebrow.

Chaos Tenno smiled.

Chaos Tenno:

"I wasn't exactly easy to get along with."

Rowena immediately laughed.

Rowena Graves:

"That's the understatement of the century."

Chaos Tenno placed a hand over his chest.

Chaos Tenno:

"That hurts."

Rowena:

"You deserve it."

Chaos Tenno:

"Probably."

The two laughed together.

The sound felt natural.

Easy.

There was no tension between them anymore.

No walls.

No barriers.

Just honesty.

Eventually Chaos Tenno's gaze drifted toward the festival below.

Children running through the streets.

Friends celebrating together.

People dancing.

Living.

Smiling.

Everything they had fought for.

Everything they had sacrificed for.

Everything they had nearly lost.

And yet—

One thought occupied his mind more than anything else.

Rowena.

Without realizing it, he smiled.

Rowena immediately noticed.

Rowena Graves:

"There it is again."

Chaos Tenno blinked.

Chaos Tenno:

"What?"

Rowena pointed directly at him.

Rowena Graves:

"That look."

Chaos Tenno:

"What look?"

Rowena:

"The one you get whenever you're thinking too much."

Chaos Tenno sighed.

Chaos Tenno:

"I always think too much."

Rowena:

"True."

The wind gently moved through her hair.

Chaos Tenno found himself staring again.

Not because he meant to.

Not because he was trying to.

It simply happened.

Every time he looked at her lately—

He found it harder to look away.

Rowena noticed.

Again.

This time she didn't tease him immediately.

Instead, she simply looked back.

Their eyes met.

For a moment—

Everything else seemed distant.

The music.

The crowd.

The festival.

The world itself.

None of it mattered.

Only this moment.

Rowena's heart unexpectedly sped up.

And judging by the expression on Chaos Tenno's face—

The same thing was happening to him.

Neither knew who spoke first.

But eventually—

Chaos Tenno broke the silence.

Chaos Tenno:

"Rowena."

His voice was softer than usual.

She looked at him.

Rowena Graves:

"Yeah?"

For once—

The Creator God seemed nervous.

Actually nervous.

Not facing an enemy.

Not confronting a cosmic threat.

Not defending creation.

Just nervous.

Because this mattered more.

Chaos Tenno looked away briefly.

Then back toward her.

Chaos Tenno:

"Can I tell you something?"

Rowena smiled gently.

Rowena Graves:

"You can tell me anything."

The words gave him courage.

A small amount.

Enough to continue.

Chaos Tenno:

"For a long time…"

He paused.

Searching for the right words.

Chaos Tenno:

"I didn't trust anyone."

Rowena nodded.

That part was true.

Everyone knew it.

Chaos Tenno:

"I kept everyone at a distance."

"I convinced myself it was easier that way."

He laughed softly.

Chaos Tenno:

"Safer."

His eyes met hers once again.

Chaos Tenno:

"Then you came along."

Rowena felt her heartbeat quicken.

Chaos Tenno smiled.

Chaos Tenno:

"You challenged me."

"You argued with me."

"You ignored every warning I gave you."

Rowena smirked.

Rowena Graves:

"Sounds like me."

Chaos Tenno laughed.

Chaos Tenno:

"Yeah."

"It does."

The smile slowly faded.

Not into sadness.

Into sincerity.

Chaos Tenno:

"But somewhere along the way…"

His voice lowered.

Chaos Tenno:

"You became the person I trusted most."

Rowena froze.

The world around her suddenly felt very quiet.

Very far away.

Chaos Tenno continued.

Chaos Tenno:

"When things got difficult…"

"I looked for you."

"When I had good news…"

"I wanted to tell you."

"When something happened…"

"You were the first person I thought about."

Rowena's eyes widened slightly.

Her heart was racing now.

Chaos Tenno took a deep breath.

For someone who had created existence itself—

This felt impossibly difficult.

Chaos Tenno:

"I think…"

He smiled nervously.

Chaos Tenno:

"No."

"I know."

His golden eyes reflected the lantern light.

Chaos Tenno:

"I love you, Rowena."

The words finally left his mouth.

Honest.

Simple.

Real.

For a moment—

Rowena couldn't speak.

Not because she was shocked.

Not because she didn't know.

Deep down—

She had known for a long time.

Tears unexpectedly formed in her eyes.

Small.

Happy.

Overwhelming.

Chaos Tenno immediately panicked.

Chaos Tenno:

"Oh no."

Rowena blinked.

Chaos Tenno:

"Are those tears?"

Rowena laughed through them.

Chaos Tenno:

"I made you cry."

Rowena:

"These are happy tears, idiot."

Chaos Tenno visibly relaxed.

Then Rowena stepped closer.

Much closer.

Close enough that neither needed to raise their voice.

Rowena smiled.

The kind of smile reserved only for him.

Rowena Graves:

"You know something?"

Chaos Tenno:

"What?"

Rowena gently took his hand.

Rowena Graves:

"You took forever."

Chaos Tenno groaned.

Chaos Tenno:

"Not you too."

Rowena laughed.

Then her expression softened.

Completely.

Rowena Graves:

"I love you too."

Chaos Tenno stopped breathing for approximately three seconds.

Rowena immediately noticed.

Rowena Graves:

"Did you just forget how breathing works?"

Chaos Tenno:

"Maybe."

Rowena:

"That's concerning."

Chaos Tenno:

"I wasn't prepared for success."

She laughed.

And somehow—

That made him love her even more.

The distance between them slowly disappeared.

Neither rushed.

Neither felt pressured.

There was no battle waiting tomorrow.

No enemy threatening existence.

No countdown.

No urgency.

Just them.

The lanterns continued floating overhead.

The festival lights shimmered around them.

The river reflected the stars.

The entire world seemed to glow.

Chaos Tenno gently reached up.

His hand brushed against Rowena's cheek.

She leaned into it.

Without hesitation.

Without fear.

Without doubt.

For the first time in a very long time—

Everything felt simple.

Their eyes met one last time.

And then—

They kissed.

Softly.

Gently.

Beneath the lantern-filled sky.

The world didn't shake.

Reality didn't crack.

No divine power exploded across creation.

Nothing dramatic happened.

Because it didn't need to.

For Chaos Tenno—

The moment already felt perfect.

When they finally pulled apart, neither moved very far.

Both were smiling.

Both were blushing slightly.

Both looked happier than they had in years.

Rowena rested her forehead against his.

Rowena Graves:

"So."

Chaos Tenno:

"So."

Rowena:

"What happens now?"

Chaos Tenno looked toward the endless horizon.

Toward the future.

Toward all the possibilities waiting ahead.

Then he looked back at her.

And smiled.

Chaos Tenno:

"Now…"

He squeezed her hand.

Chaos Tenno:

"We get to find out together."

Above them, thousands of lanterns drifted toward the stars.

And beneath that beautiful sky—

Chaos Tenno and Rowena Graves stood side by side.

Not as warriors.

Not as heroes.

Not as legends.

But as two people who had finally found the future they wanted.

Together.
