Chapter 149 - Chapter 149 Yet this good neighbor-wife was not only experienced,

Yet this good neighbor-wife was not only experienced

but also completely uninhibited—and loved to play teacher.

Under her guidance, Hunter had not only learned plenty,

but had also enjoyed a taste of what it felt like to hit the jackpot.

Add to that the fact that, night after night, she had gone out of her way to bring him warmth,

and Hunter didn't mind giving her a permanent spot as his mistress.

Arriving at the seaside hotel, he parked his bike and got ready to go inside.

If Maggie hadn't returned the key card, Hunter had no intention of extending the booking.

Stanfield had been on the run for several days; the FBI was now searching for him across the entire United States.

Although Maggie and Matilda were Michael's family, they had nothing to do with the case the FBI was investigating.

By now they should have long been released by the Bureau.

If Maggie and Matilda hadn't come back here, there was only one possibility left—

the mother and daughter were planning to leave the city.

If that was the case, Hunter would respect their choice.

The moment he stepped into the hotel, the front-desk manager recognized him.

After all, it was hard to forget a guest who had booked the same room for over ten days and whose female companion had once been taken away by the FBI after her husband was murdered.

"Sir, you're finally here."

The manager greeted him with a smile and immediately reminded him, "As you instructed last time, your companion arrived at the hotel a few days ago."

"She's been staying and eating here for the past few days; the bill is now four—"

Hunter cut him off before he could finish.

"Got it. I'll settle the tab in a moment."

Seeing how readily he answered, the manager smiled and led him to the elevator,

even personally pressing the button for him.

Soon the elevator reached the floor of the reserved room.

Hunter stepped out unhurriedly and walked toward the suite.

Before long he was at the door; he raised a hand and tapped lightly.

After a few seconds came the sound of footsteps.

The door opened quickly, revealing a little girl whose face was full of indifference.

It was none other than Matilda!

"Hey."

Hunter lifted a hand and greeted her.

He knew Matilda's relationship with her biological father Michael—who beat and scolded her at every turn—and with her older sister Liv was terrible.

In this little girl's heart there was probably far more hatred than affection.

The only family member she felt close to was probably her younger half-brother, born to her step-mom Maggie.

When Matilda saw it was Hunter, she nodded expressionlessly,

then turned and walked back into the room, calling inside, "Mom, the person you're waiting for is here."

Hunter wasn't bothered by the child's cold attitude.

He stepped into the room and closed the door behind him.

As he turned around, a strong wave of perfume hit him.

"Thank heavens you're finally here, my little lover."

Feeling Maggie's enthusiasm, Hunter patted her lightly while looking at this good neighbor-wife.

He couldn't see much sorrow on her face.

Perhaps she had merely been muddling through life with her husband Michael.

But she should still have feelings for her children—

well, not too many, anyway.

Seeing that smile on her face, as if she had found support again,

Hunter raised an eyebrow and, putting an arm around Maggie, walked further into the room…

Chapter 148 – Settling the Mother and Daughter, Finding the Reason

Afterward, Hunter pulled out a cigarette.

Maggie lit it for him with a lighter; he took a drag and slowly exhaled the smoke.

Looking at this good neighbor-wife, languid and exhausted yet forcing herself to stay awake,

Hunter said slowly, "In a while I'll check out of the hotel. You and Matilda go stay at the apartment I'm renting for a few days."

"If you're too shaken up to go there, I'll find you another apartment."

"I'm looking around; I plan to buy a farm."

"When the time comes, you can live there."

"Really?"

Maggie looked at Hunter in disbelief; after learning of her husband Michael's death she hadn't actually felt much grief.

After all, the reason she had agreed to marry him in the first place was just for mutual support and to have someone to rely on!

She worked in a nightclub as a bar hostess!

With such a history, even if she had truly kept herself clean, it would be very difficult to find a good home!
