"Wow," Diego purred, his voice dripping with a sickening blend of theatrical pride and cold, dark malice. "Wow... so the princess can actually fight."
Before I could even catch my breath or wipe the fresh splatter of blood from my face, Mason moved. His hand clamped onto my arm, his fingers like heated steel, and he violently hauled me backward, throwing his entire large frame between me and the doorway.
I stumbled, my knees buckling beneath me, but his grip never loosened, never gave me the chance to fall. There was something almost inhuman in the speed of it, as though some switch inside him had been flipped, transforming the person I thought I knew into something harder, much more fierce.
"Stay with Rose, Phina! The both of you, get to the back wall right now!" Mason roared.
