Lydia's Point Of View
I didn't move. My ears rang with a high-pitched whine that drowned out everything else.
"Ms. Vale will be the one to present it to us."
The Chairman's voice sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a very deep, very annoying well. My fingers, still clamped around the edge of my file, felt like they were turning into stone. The cardboard edge bit into my skin, but I couldn't make myself let go.
After three nights of surviving on nothing but caffeine and spite? After basically bleeding over these spreadsheets just to get a glimpse at the men who actually ran this world? After sacrificing sleep, meals, and what was left of my sanity to make these numbers sing?
And now, he was just handing it to her. Like she needed another trophy for her collection. Like she hadn't already sucked all the oxygen out of the room the moment she walked in.
