Lucien's POV
"I think I heard something," I said, pausing, my hand stilling from finger fucking her.
"You did? How come I didn't?" Natalie asked, breath uneven.
"Maybe it's just the wind," she added quickly.
"Right."
But the tension in my chest didn't ease.
I tried to brush it off, but the moment had already broken. The interest was gone. I adjusted her gown, lowered her legs, then walked over to the small tap in the corner and washed my hands.
Something felt… off. I just can't place it yet.
Strangely, I felt good today.
At some point, I started questioning the whole mate bond.
No matter how much I tried to act it—tried to feel it before coming here—I felt nothing. No grief. No pull. No pain.
Just… nothing.
Were the legends even true about the bond? I wondered.
If I didn't clearly remember it, if my wolf hadn't claimed her as mine, I would have doubted we were mates.
