"Failing me?" he repeated softly.
She nodded quickly, wiping at her tears but only making it worse. "Amira found this clinic," she rushed on, the words tumbling over each other now. "She said they could help…that they could make sure everything would work, that I could..." her voice broke again, "...that I could give you a child."
Julian went still and was completely shocked. Amara didn't notice. She kept going, desperate now, desperate for him to understand.
"They did some examination," she said, shaking her head slightly, as if she still didn't fully understand it herself. "And the doctor said I have to wait thirty days. No intimacy, nothing, or it could cause complications."
Her voice softened, fragile.
"I was doing it for you and me," she whispered. "So you could finally have the family you deserve." Silence fell. Heavy. Julian didn't speak. Didn't move.
And when Amara finally looked up at him. She froze. Because he didn't look relieved. He didn't look grateful. He looked.
