Chapter 5 - Chapter II: The Crime’s Echo (Part III)

It was four in the afternoon. Everything seemed to be fine, despite the clashes against the mutants. Many people chose to take refuge inside their homes; others simply carried on as if nothing were happening.

In Mihondy, a neighborhood within the city, there was a police headquarters. The district had always been conflictive, and with the rise of mutants it had only grown worse. Due to its poor location, officers were constantly in danger despite being armed with firearms. With the emergence of mutant-related crimes, they had lost several agents in different confrontations. This was mainly due to their low level of weaponry, as they often faced mutants with superior abilities—classified as Trolls for their hardened skin, inhuman strength, and monstrous violence.

On several occasions, they had requested permission from higher command to abandon Mihondy, but every request was denied, no matter how many times they asked. In that situation, only one option remained if they wanted to keep fighting the increasingly numerous mutants…

Ring, ring, ring… The phone rang at the Mihondy gendarmerie. The captain answered immediately.

—Central Headquarters calling the Mihondy Department, over…

—Mihondy Department here, Captain Ferros speaking. We read you loud and clear, over.

—The requested delivery will be made tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. The cargo will be escorted by several military vehicles, but once inside the Mihondy zone, they will turn back.

—Understood. We will take over from there. Thank you very much.

—Be extremely careful. No mistakes will be tolerated. Over and out.

—Uff… —the captain sighed— Elvis!

—Yes, Captain!

—Gather the entire squad. Prepare for the worst. We will receive the cargo at the border, and no mistakes are allowed. This information must not leak. Be discreet. IS THAT CLEAR?!

—Yes, sir!

They knew it wouldn't be easy, so they prepared with everything they had. They prepared for the worst.

At 5:30 p.m., three armored military vehicles left the Mihondy station heading toward the meeting point to retrieve the package.

—Alpha 1, report the situation.

—Alpha 1 reporting: the right flank is calm, no threats detected.

—Alpha 3, everything okay in the rear?

—Confirmed. Advancing without issues.

They continued moving calmly toward the meeting point. The clock marked 6:25 p.m. when they arrived at the designated location. The cargo hadn't arrived yet, so they took security measures.

—Move, move, move… secure blind spots. Form teams of three. I don't want casualties. Be ready to get the hell out of this place as soon as the delivery is done.

—Yes, sir!

And so they did. In the distance, a convoy could be seen approaching—military vehicles with the package positioned in the center. The clock marked 6:50 p.m.

—Central, calling Captain Ferros… respond!

—Ferros here!

—Are you ready to receive the package? We don't have time to waste.

—Yes, we're ready.

—Good. There will be no stops. Start your vehicles and move as soon as the package crosses the limit. From that point on, it's under your jurisdiction.

—Understood.

—Ah… and Captain… don't use it unless the situation demands it. Understood?

—Understood. Everyone, back to the vehicles. There will be no stops. The gift is just minutes away from us, so let's get out of here.

Everyone hurried back into the vehicles. Everything seemed to be going according to plan. Engines roared to life, forming a triangle around the package as they advanced through the streets of Mihondy toward the military base.

They could already see the base—it was only minutes away. Everyone looked relieved by how simple and smooth the operation had been.

Then it happened.

BOOM!

Something struck the military vehicles, forcing them to stop abruptly.

—It's time… fast, boys. Finish them here and now —said Maren from underground.

—Sir! We're under attack! We're under attack!

—Everyone, get ready! Move, move, move! We can't let them take it!

—Yes, sir!

They all got out and faced something unexpected. This wasn't a simple group of mutant criminals. No—they were soldiers willing to die for their cause. They had a plan.

At the front stood three Trolls of different species, forming the vanguard. Behind them were four Lucers, mutants with ranged attack abilities. In the rear stood Maren and Edgar, the leaders.

—Attack! Show no mercy! They're not kids—they're monsters! —Captain Ferros shouted.

The battle was intense. Bullets bounced off the Trolls' skin like drops of water. With their brute strength, they crushed the agents they encountered. Some died instantly; others were left gravely wounded. The Lucers attacked with spikes, spears, and still-limited but effective abilities.

They were winning. More than half of the soldiers had fallen.

Hidden behind an overturned car, Captain Ferros looked at the cargo. Without knowing what was inside, he gambled his life on an even riskier plan.

Suddenly, he sprinted forward, firing his weapon and leaping over obstacles toward the cargo. He reached it and used his fingerprint to open the vehicle.

Then he saw it.

From the rear, Maren was nearly celebrating victory. Almost all the soldiers were down. It was a flawless win. For someone so young, she was a capable strategist—she boasted silently to Edgar.

Bang. Bang. Bang.

Three gunshots echoed, aimed at one of the Trolls. Accustomed to being unharmed, they watched—until something changed.

Martín collapsed to the ground. A pool of blood spread around him.

Everyone froze, paralyzed with fear.

—Not bad… these new weapons. Heavy, sure, but now I understand all the security —said a voice.

Captain Ferros emerged calmly from behind the vehicle containing the package, smiling.

Only five men remained—but with those weapons, they would make a difference.

—They have them… they have them! RETREAT! —Maren screamed in panic.

The five men armed themselves quickly, each choosing a weapon that caught their eye, and the massacre began.

Bang!

Aahhh!

No, please…!

The echo of the crimes filled the air. The young ones were being slaughtered.

—Edgar, let's go! There's nothing we can do! Let's go!

—What are you saying?! They're there because of us! We have to help them!

—They're dead! There's no one left to help! If we don't leave now, we'll die too! Is that what you want?!

They were about to flee when a scream echoed behind them.

—Edgar… Maren… help us, please… I beg you… I don't want to die like this! Aaaahhh!

They looked at each other. Edgar turned back and decided to return. He ran toward the surface. At the exit, a soldier appeared in front of him, aimed, and fired.

Bang.

Edgar fell to the ground. He didn't move.

Maren saw everything.

The soldier saw her too.

They stared at each other for a moment—but the soldier couldn't pull the trigger.

Maren fled the scene. The soldier, without knowing why, let her escape.

That attack was broadcast as the first military strike by the mutant section of Mihondy. It didn't last long, but that spark became the flame that set the world on fire.

Rebel groups emerged across the globe. Some demanded rights; others simply seized the opportunity to cause harm.

Violence escalated drastically worldwide. Murders, torture, kidnappings…

Mutants in various regions formed entire societies to survive, using violence as a bargaining tool against humans. Borders and limits were established between species—humans, mutants, and their variants. Differences in nature and ideology caused them to fracture over time, growing distant and hateful toward one another.

To ensure security and preserve the human species, the human government enacted the LAW OF RACE, prohibiting all forms of relationships between species. Those who broke the law risked being declared traitors and sentenced to death.

Thus, a new world order was born—ruled by terror, hatred, and mutual vengeance.

The world was in flames. Sand buried corpses, water turned red, and hearts lost all hope.

Somewhere hidden in the world…

—Listen to me carefully, ladies. Hell is coming, and when it arrives, it will bring something that can fix everything… or destroy everything… (coughs) When that time comes, the light will incarnate, and it will be your duty to guide it to its destiny… (coughs) Do not be deceived by anyone or anything. Protect it and guide it—that is your duty from this day forward. Find it, help it, or no one will ever see the light of day again.

After those final words, ELLONOR, the eldest of the Black Ladies—those believed to be the witches who cursed the world—died.
