Chapter 38 - Another skill acquired

I'm curious why she's trying to recruit Oswin; is she really a scout, and why is she being so secretive? When I search for her name online, nothing comes up. And that match Oswin described was too specific, and a skilled player who rivals Oswin's dribbling skills. I really want to open this envelope. But seeing Oswin being that down, I don't think I will have a fair shot. One thing at a time, Winston, let me focus on this upcoming match before I can open this envelope. And this woman, named Diana, is quite strange. I need to be careful from now on.

For now, I will just put this envelope inside my suitcase, let me use this time to train with Dumi. I must use this time to soak up more knowledge and techniques from Dumi to refine my own techniques. Thanks to Boris for the training, I have been feeling a lot more agile. And this Nethen Essence and Voltage core might reward me with more points.

Winston pondered while walking down the steps leading to the training ground; on this third week, he has been drawing up plans to win this upcoming match. Thanks to his sleepless night, he has been thinking about playing styles and the skill moves he wants to buy. "Oh you here kid, it so unusual to see you here late," said Dumi, who was standing with Oswin, surprised to see them there, he jogged toward them and rubbing his back head in a jokily manner he said, "I am sorry coach, I overslept,"

In honest, Winston didn't sleep; he was just to engrossed in what happened to Oswin, "you good, bro it not like you to miss training, you are a workaholic," seeing Oswin in a cheery mood, he wondered if he had talked to Dumi about one-on-one training. Scanning the training ground, Winston saw a lot of training equipment placed all over the ground; Dumi interjected, and he said, "This is your third week, so I know you've been waiting for this one. Today we will focus on shooting," he turned facing both Winston and Oswin, he continued, "Kid, do you have any question"

Winston recalled the dead-ball technique, he asked on the second week, Winston looked at Dumi and he said, "Yes, about dead ball."

"Mmm, you want to specialize in free kicks"

"Umm, I want to master it without free kicks or penalties; one twin in Arlesey used it against us, and he used the dead-ball technique while he was moving."

"Oh yeah, that kid did somewhat master it, but if you noticed, he didn't use it while sprinting. He stopped and dribbled into an open space, and he trigger run the ball into an open space."

"Oh, is it possible to use it without stopping?,"

"Yes, you can, but you have to kick it with more precision, let me show you," Dumi tapped the ball in front of him, he dribbled toward the mannequins that were standing in a defensive formation. Dumi's rapid-fire dribbling weaved through the mannequins, a blur of motion that left Winston and Oswin awestruck by his agility. As he neared the goal, Dumi unleashed a shot, the ball arcing in a seamless ninety-degree "S" shape, spinning precisely into the top right corner, leaving Winston questioning reality.

What he witnessed was so bewildering that the hair on the back of his neck prickled with unease. Jolted back by Oswin, who was shaking Winston's shoulder excitedly,

"Bro, what, oh shit, did you see that?" Oswin held his head in amazement, he continued, "Old man Crowe, can you also train me to."

Dumi looked back at the goal area, he said, "I am a little rusty, I can teach you this move, but I have a friend who specializes in your position, and he is a pro at training. He will come two days from now. That move is called finesse."

"Yes, thank you, old man Crowe"

"This technique is defined by the positioning, if you were paying attention to that kid, you would have noticed. His kicking positioning was fundamental, he leaned more on the front and he pushed himself back, propelling into a more arc curve. Of course, it's effective, but it needs time to prepare. This is why his technique needed him to be a sprinter and a fast reactor and calm composure."

Winston pondered over what Dumi just said, he looked back at Dumi and asked, "The one you used was different, it was similar to Oswin style,"

"Not real, mine is similar to Darwin's , a little. That skill is my amateur attempt of my favourite winger, Atlas Zebalini,"

"Lucky for you, kid, that the person who is going to teach you,"

Eyes widened, Oswin roared with excitement. He said, "Thank you, old man… I mean Mr. Crowe. I can't wait to be trained by the best winger who was terrifying the defenders in the senior league."

"Okay let get back to training, kid there are variety shooting techniques, Instep Drive (Laces Shot), Inside-of-the-Foot (Placed Shot), Outside-of-the-Foot (Trivela), Chip/Lob Shot, Header, Knuckleball (Dip Shot)."

Winston pondered and asked, "Is it possible to incorporate any of these shooting techniques with dead-ball?"

"Mmm, It could work but you have to be quick on your movement, and a placed shot would be a better mash up dead-ball," Dumi pondered for a while until he snapped out of it and said, "for now let's focus on mastering these other shooting techniques first."

The first shooting drill they focused on was about Winston receiving a high ball from afar, from Oswin. With a few failed tries behind him, Dumi patiently demonstrated how to receive the ball on his chest and transition it smoothly to his feet, warning against holding onto it too tightly. After becoming accustomed to Oswin's lofty deliveries, he'd smoothly trap the ball against his chest and seamlessly bring it down to his feet. He lacked a shooting stance, which made him hit the goalpost. Dumi also showed him how to position when taking a shot. And how he should lean to his sides when shooting. After like twenty or forty attempts, Winston started getting used to it and he started scoring goals. The training drill changed positions from thirty meters to twenty and ten meters from the goal area; the drills were also mixed with heading since Dumi realized Winston played as a target man and he needed to master heading.

After some time, Dumi suggested they practice the shooting techniques Winston was eager to learn. Winston's first request was for a long-range shot. When he was young, Winston had always admired Dumi's long shots and would frequently rewatch his highlight reels.

While Dumi was demonstrating the shooting technique, Winston unfortunately failed to pay attention; Winston's long shot attempt was marred by such abysmal form that the ball ultimately ended up soaring over the designated goal post.

Winston glanced at the flashing notification; he had forgotten that in order for him to master or be able to use a specific skill, he needed to buy them. He even forgot that he had accumulated points from his previous training. While Dumi was showcasing his impressive ability to kick the ball from a considerable distance, And Oswin was simultaneously trying to execute the same long shot technique, prompting Winston to swiftly access the core system, and navigated to the skill move shop, and purchase the desired long shot skill.

After Dumi finished his demonstration and Winston had taken a few deep breaths, he sprinted towards the ball and then powerfully kicked it into the top corner of the net. Winston came to the understanding that accumulating additional points was a necessary step for him to achieve true mastery and effectively utilize these shooting techniques.
