Chapter 19 - CHAPTER 19 – Practical Exam

The Main Courtyard of Northwood Academy looked like a high-tech execution ground. At its center stood three "Rank Stability Pillars"—monolithic towers of blackened steel etched with glowing orange circuits. They hummed with a low-frequency vibration that set Kai's teeth on edge, a sound that resonated deep within the marrow of his bones.

Around the pillars, the Bureau of Talent Integrity agents moved with the cold efficiency of droids. They were dressed in sterile white combat-suits, their faces obscured by polarized visors. But it wasn't the agents that made the five hundred assembled students go dead silent.

It was the man sitting on a raised throne of violet-tinted mana-glass.

The Violet Sage didn't look like a janitor anymore. He wore robes of deep amethyst that seemed to swallow the morning sunlight, his silver hair flowing over his shoulders like a frozen waterfall. But those eyes—the piercing, unnatural violet embers—remained the same. He leaned his chin on a gloved hand, watching the students with the bored curiosity of a god looking at an ant farm.

"He's looking at you," Elena whispered. She was standing barely an inch from Kai, her S-rank aura retracted into a tight, shivering shell. The Empress's Anchor was the only thing keeping Kai's core from vibrating out of his chest.

"I have a very punchable face, Elena. It's one of my few consistent talents," Kai replied, his voice a low rasp.

He surreptitiously pulled up his status.

[Current Status: Kai Rowan]

[Rank: D (Hidden / Cloaked as F)]

[Talent: Adaptive Learner (Origin: Growth Potential)]

Attributes:

[Strength: 7.55]

[Agility: 7.50]

[Intelligence: 9.15]

[Stamina: 7.95]

[Status: Syncing with 'Empress's Anchor']

"The pillars," Elena said, her eyes fixed on the nearest tower. "They use 'Forced Resonance.' They're going to pump raw, unfiltered mana into your core. If your rank is a lie, the core will over-rotate to compensate for the pressure. It's like putting a high-performance engine in a cardboard box. The box will shred."

"So, my 'cardboard box' needs to become a black hole," Kai muttered. "If I can't hide the mana, I'll just eat it. My talent is 'Growth,' right? What is a stress-test but a very aggressive, government-funded meal?"

"Kai, that's suicide," Elena hissed. "If you absorb that much raw pressure, you could trigger a premature evolution. You'll explode in front of the Chief Investigator."

"Better to explode as a mystery than to be dissected as a fraud," Kai said, his sarcastic smirk returning, though it was slightly crooked. "Besides, I've always wanted to see how much 'Potential' I actually have."

The Testing Begins

Headmaster Vance stepped onto the dais, his voice amplified by the Academy's mana-grid.

"The Rank Stability Exam is now in session. One by one, you will step into the Pillar's radius. You will endure three pulses of 'Core Stress.' If your talent is stable, the pillar remains orange. If you are masking your rank or using artifacts, the pillar will turn red. Failure to maintain stability results in immediate detention and core-sealing."

The first student stepped up—a B-rank girl with 'Wind Manipulation.' She looked confident.

The first pulse hit. The air around her turned a violent orange. She staggered, her breath hitching as her mana flared.

The second pulse hit. Her hair whipped around her face, and her wind started to leak, creating small dust devils at her feet.

The third pulse hit. She let out a sharp cry, her knees hitting the stone. The pillar remained orange.

"Stable. Rank B confirmed," the agent droned.

The line moved with agonizing slowness. Kai watched as C-rank students—the backbone of the school—struggled. Some vomited from the mana-nausea; others had to be carried away by medics. The "Core Stress" wasn't just a measurement; it was a physical assault.

"Next! Tyler Markson, Rank C!"

Tyler was a well-known bully in the middle-tiers, a guy who had made Kai's life miserable for years by using his 'Kinetic Impact' talent to knock Kai's books into the mud. He stepped into the ring with a swagger that quickly evaporated as the first pulse hit.

Tyler's face turned a sickly shade of purple. His kinetic talent flared uncontrollably, the ground beneath him cracking as invisible hammers slammed into the stone.

"Pulse two!" the agent called.

Tyler screamed. The orange light from the pillar was blinding. His talent was fighting back, trying to push against the external pressure. It was a classic "Rigid Core" response. He held on, but by the third pulse, he was a shaking mess, blood trickling from his ears.

"Stable. Rank C confirmed. Barely," the agent noted with a look of pure disdain.

Tyler stumbled away, leaning against a wall, his pride shattered. He looked toward the F-rank queue, his eyes landing on Kai with a look of predatory hate. "Go on then, Rowan. Let's see how 'Growth Potential' handles a real man's pressure. You'll probably turn into a puddle on the first pulse."

The Outshining

"Kai Rowan, Rank F," the agent announced.

A ripple of laughter went through the crowd. The "Millennium Man" was up. The students who hadn't seen the duel with Brooks were expecting a comedy routine.

Elena gripped Kai's arm one last time. "Don't fight it. Inhale it."

Kai stepped into the circle. He felt the Violet Sage's gaze shift. It wasn't the bored look anymore. The Sage sat up, his violet eyes narrowing as they locked onto Kai's chest.

"Initiating Pulse One," the agent said, looking like he was about to fall asleep.

The orange wave slammed into Kai.

It didn't feel like a hammer. To Kai's Adaptive Body, it felt like a heavy, warm blanket. His 7.95 Stamina took the hit, and his Adaptive Learner talent instantly began to decode the frequency of the pulse.

Logic identified: Compression and Vibration. Mimicking frequency...

Kai didn't move. He didn't even blink. He stood perfectly still, his hands in his pockets.

The orange light washed over him and... disappeared. It was as if the mana had hit a void.

The agent blinked, checking his display. "Pulse One... absorbed? Status: Stable. Initiating Pulse Two."

The second pulse was three times stronger. It was meant to make C-ranks buckle. The ground beneath Kai groaned, the air around him shimmering with the sheer force of the mana-pressure.

Kai closed his eyes.

[Skill Activated: Focused Breathing]

[Status: Origin Hunger Triggered]

Instead of pushing back, Kai opened his mana-channels wide. He treated the pulse like a deep breath.

[Growth Potential Progress: 18.5% ... 20.0% ... 25.0%!]

The orange mana was sucked into his skin, fueling his D-rank core. To the spectators, it looked like Kai was a statue. There was no flare. No leak. No struggle. He was the calm center of a hurricane.

The Violet Sage stood up from his glass throne. The agents looked at each other, confused.

"Is the pillar malfunctioning?" Headmaster Vance demanded, his voice cracking with anxiety.

"It's at maximum output for an F-rank, sir!" the agent shouted. "Rowan isn't just stable. He's... he's empty!"

"Pulse Three," a voice rang out. It wasn't the agent.

The Violet Sage walked down the stairs of the dais, his amethyst robes whispering against the stone. He stood ten feet from the pillar, his violet eyes glowing with a terrifying intensity. "Set the pillar to Class-B Threshold. Let's see what this 'Potential' can truly hold."

"But Sage! He's an F-rank! A Class-B pulse will kill him!" Vance protested.

"Do it," the Sage commanded.

The pillar's circuits turned from orange to a brilliant, searing white. The hum became a high-pitched scream.

Elena took an instinctive step forward, her ice flaring, but the Sage raised a hand, and she was frozen in place by a field of absolute violet mana.

"Pulse Three!"

The white wave erupted. It was a wall of force that would have sent Tyler Markson through the Academy walls. It hit Kai with the sound of a thunderclap.

Kai's blazer was shredded instantly. His 7.55 Strength pushed back, his feet anchoring into the obsidian floor with such force the stone turned to dust.

Inside his mind, the golden screen was a blur of numbers.

[STRESS OVERLOAD DETECTED]

[ADAPTIVE BODY: STRENGTHENING...]

[GROWTH POTENTIAL EXP +15.0%!]

Kai's head snapped back, his teeth gritted. He felt the violet light from the Sage and the white light from the pillar clashing in his soul. He didn't just endure it; he mastered it.

He looked toward Tyler Markson, who was still gasping on the sidelines, and then toward the Violet Sage.

Kai didn't collapse. He didn't vomit. He slowly reached out a hand and touched the surface of the Rank Stability Pillar.

With a soft tink, the white mana of the pillar suddenly turned Golden.

The pillar groaned, its circuits flickering before it shut down entirely, overloaded by the sheer intake of its own energy. Kai stood in the center of the ring, his tattered clothes smoking, his body radiating a heat so intense the air was warping around him.

He wasn't an F-rank struggle. He had just endured a pulse that made the C-rank bully look like a flickering candle.

The silence was absolute.

"Stable," Kai panted, a dark, sarcastic glint in his eyes as he looked at the stunned agent. "Does that mean I pass? Or do I need to break another one?"

The Violet Sage didn't speak. He just smiled—a wide, predatory smile that revealed far too many teeth.

"You didn't just pass, Kai Rowan," the Sage said, his voice echoing in the dead courtyard. "You've just set a new record for the most 'Potential' ever seen in this Academy's history."

He turned to the Headmaster, who was looking at Kai with pure terror.

"I believe we've found our representative for the Inter-Academy Tournament," the Sage added.

Kai's heart plummeted. He had outshone the C-ranks so completely that he was no longer a background character. He was now the most interesting thing in the world to the most dangerous man he'd ever met.

[Quest Completed: The Practical Exam]

[Hidden Reward: Recognition of the Sage]

[New Ranking: '???' (Pending Bureau Evaluation)]

Elena was finally released from the violet field. She ran to Kai, her eyes wide with a mixture of pride and horror.

"You idiot," she whispered. "You just made yourself a target for every S-rank in the country."

Kai looked at the Violet Sage, who was still watching him, and then at the broken, smoking pillar.

"Well," Kai said, his voice a weary whisper. "At least I don't have to fix toasters."
