Chapter 84 - Chapter Eighty-four: The Voice Beneath The City

The ground moved again.

Not a tremor this time.

A deliberate movement.

Something beneath the sanctuary was rising.

Ariana stood completely still as golden light continued spreading beneath her feet.

The first generation had stopped moving.

Even the Architects looked uncertain.

Then the voice came again.

"The Covenant has been restored."

Ariana looked toward the floor.

"Who are you?"

For several seconds, there was no answer.

Then the entire sanctuary went dark.

Every light disappeared.

The artificial sky above them vanished.

The Memory Tree stopped glowing.

Only the golden light beneath Ariana remained.

Lena reached for her hand.

"Ariana, don't move."

"I wasn't planning to."

A deep sound rolled through the city.

It sounded almost like breathing.

Slow.

Massive.

Alive.

The silver-haired woman dropped to her knees.

Ariana stared at her.

"What are you doing?"

The woman bowed her head.

"We have waited thousands of years for this moment."

"I didn't ask you to wait."

"You didn't need to."

Ariana's frustration grew.

"Everyone keeps talking as though I was born knowing all of this."

The woman looked up.

"You weren't."

"Then stop treating me like I am supposed to understand."

The woman stood slowly.

"You are right."

She looked around at the sanctuary.

"We made the mistake of believing blood carried knowledge."

Ariana frowned.

"It doesn't?"

"No."

The woman's expression softened.

"Blood carries potential."

Ariana looked at her hands.

"Then what carries knowledge?"

The answer came from beneath them.

"Memory."

Ariana froze.

The voice wasn't coming from the speakers anymore.

It was inside her mind.

She could hear it as clearly as her own thoughts.

"Get out of my head."

Lena looked at her.

"What happened?"

Ariana shook her head.

"I heard something."

The Architect suddenly stepped forward.

"You heard it too."

Ariana turned toward him.

"You know this voice."

He didn't answer.

"You know what is underneath us."

Still nothing.

Ariana's patience snapped.

"What is down there?"

The Architect looked at the floor.

"The first source."

Adrian immediately raised his weapon.

"You told us the source was Ariana."

"The bloodline is the vessel."

The Architect looked at Ariana.

"But the source..."

He paused.

"...is older."

A violent tremor shook the sanctuary.

The floor split open several feet away.

A massive circular platform emerged from beneath the stone.

Ancient symbols covered its surface.

At its center was a small depression shaped exactly like a human hand.

Ariana stared at it.

She knew what it wanted.

"No."

The Architect looked at her.

"Yes."

"You want me to touch it."

"We need you to."

Ariana shook her head.

"That's exactly why I won't."

The Architect's expression hardened.

"If you don't, everyone in this sanctuary may die."

Lena stepped forward.

"You're threatening her."

"I'm warning her."

Adrian moved between them.

"Same thing."

The Architect ignored him.

"The system beneath us is waking without a proper connection. If it completes the awakening on its own, this entire mountain will collapse."

Ariana looked around.

People were already running toward the outer corridors.

Children cried.

The first generation began directing citizens toward evacuation routes.

She looked back at the platform.

"How do I stop it?"

The Architect answered immediately.

"Touch the seal."

"And then?"

"You will know."

Ariana almost laughed.

"Of course."

She stepped toward the platform.

Lena caught her arm.

"You don't have to do this."

Ariana looked at her.

"Actually, I do."

"No."

Lena shook her head.

"You don't know what it'll do to you."

Ariana glanced at the glowing cracks beneath her feet.

"Neither does anyone else."

She gently removed Lena's hand.

"But if that thing wakes up without me, people die."

Lena's eyes filled with fear.

"Promise me you'll come back."

Ariana managed a faint smile.

"I'll try."

She walked onto the platform.

The entire sanctuary fell silent.

The golden light surrounding her intensified.

Ariana slowly raised her hand.

For a moment, she hesitated.

Then she placed her palm against the seal.

Everything disappeared.

The sanctuary.

The people.

The Architects.

Lena.

Even her own body.

Ariana found herself standing in darkness.

Then a light appeared in the distance.

A woman walked toward her.

Long dark hair.

Familiar eyes.

The same face Ariana had seen in her visions.

Her ancestor.

Ariana stared at her.

"Are you real?"

The woman smiled.

"That depends on what you believe reality is."

Ariana shook her head.

"I don't have time for riddles."

"Good."

The woman stopped in front of her.

"Then listen carefully."

Ariana's heart pounded.

"What is beneath the sanctuary?"

The woman's expression became serious.

"Not what."

She reached toward Ariana's chest.

"Who."

Ariana stepped back.

"Who?"

The woman nodded.

"The first consciousness."

Ariana's blood ran cold.

"Human?"

"Once."

The woman looked into her eyes.

"Now, it is something else."

Ariana swallowed.

"Why does it want me?"

"It doesn't want you."

The woman smiled sadly.

"It recognizes you."

The darkness around them began to crack.

Ariana heard Lena's voice somewhere far away.

Then Adrian's.

Then her mother's.

The vision was collapsing.

Her ancestor leaned closer.

"There is one thing you must never forget."

"What?"

"Power does not make you the heir."

Ariana stared at her.

"Then what does?"

The woman whispered:

"Choice."

The darkness shattered.

Ariana's eyes flew open.

She was back inside the sanctuary.

But something had changed.

The platform beneath her was glowing.

The cracks had stopped spreading.

The ancient voice spoke one final time.

"Connection established."

Ariana looked around.

Everyone was staring at her.

The Architect's face had gone completely pale.

He whispered:

"She's done it."

Adrian frowned.

"Done what?"

The Architect looked toward Ariana.

"She opened the source."

Ariana's heart sank.

Because beneath the sanctuary, something had just opened its eyes.
