Chapter 24 - Volume 7: The Weight of Being Held. Chapter 2: The Morning of Seeds

Dawn arrived wrapped in a soft mist that descended from the hills like a damp cloak. The village was still half-asleep; the houses exhaled the warm smoke of the first fires lit to prepare breakfast.

Ren, for his part, had not slept.

He didn't need to.

He had spent the night sitting outside the hut where Suki was being attended by one of the veteran warriors. Not like a desperate guardian… but like a fixed, silent presence, impossible to ignore.

And that calculated decision bore fruit faster than expected.

Katara was the first to appear.

The young woman came out of the hut where they, the Avatar team, had spent the night. Her hair was still damp, half-gathered. Her blue eyes were heavy with fatigue, as if she had dreamed of the sea wolf's attack over and over.

When she saw him, she stopped.

The breeze stirred her blue cloak. Ren observed her discreetly: the slight frown, the tension in her fingers, the way she exhaled slowly… everything indicated unease.

—"Were you here all night?" Katara asked, her voice still rough from sleep.

Ren showed no surprise. He just shifted his gaze to the closed door behind him.

—"Suki was hurt," he replied calmly. "I wasn't going to leave her alone."

Katara took a deep breath. That simple gesture… disarmed her a little.

Ren knew how to read her.

He knew how to read her.

—"You didn't have to stay," Katara insisted, but it sounded too soft, almost grateful.

Ren inclined his head slightly.

—"I don't do things because I have to," he said. "I do them because I care about who's around me."

The phrase landed gently, without seeming like flattery. Katara received it like one would a bucket of warm water.

She didn't know why it affected her so much.

She didn't know why this strange boy could get through her defenses so quickly.

Ren did.

And he didn't need to pressure her. It was enough to plant seeds.

Aang came out at that moment, still half-asleep, rubbing his eyes with the back of his hand. His clothes were a bit wrinkled.

—"Oh… Ren," he yawned. "How is Suki?"

Ren slowly got to his feet. He made no sudden movement; his posture was that of a calm, almost humble young man who wasn't seeking attention.

—"Stable," he replied. "She didn't suffer deep injuries, just muscle damage in her leg. She'll be fine."

Aang sighed in relief. It was a pure, transparent, childish relief. And Ren absorbed it with surgical precision.

—"That's good…" Aang said, smiling. "I saw you fight last night. It was incredible!"

The Avatar's enthusiasm was warm, naive. An open door.

Ren smiled, but with modesty.

—"I just reacted. The beast was hungry and confused. Anyone would have done the same."

Katara noticed the humility.

Aang noticed the bravery.

They both interpreted exactly what Ren wanted them to interpret.

Sokka was the last to join, with huge dark circles, his spear resting on his shoulder and a suspicious expression.

—"And why were you there?" he blurted out tactlessly. "How is it you show up just when there's an attack? What a coincidence, huh?"

Katara nudged him with her elbow.

—"Sokka! Don't be rude."

—"What? I'm just saying!"

Aang looked at Ren with concern.

—"Don't mind him," he said quickly. "He's… tired."

Ren didn't seem bothered. In fact, he seemed to understand Sokka more than the others did.

—"It's normal to be suspicious," Ren replied, with a serenity that surprised the young Water Tribe warrior. "A village was attacked, someone got hurt… and I'm a stranger here."

Sokka opened his mouth to retort, but Ren continued.

—"Doubt isn't a bad thing. It's prudence. And a leader needs prudence."

Sokka fell silent.

Ren had taken a step toward them without them even noticing:

He gave Katara emotional protection. He gave Aang validation and calm.He gave Sokka respect and recognition.

Three moves, three clean strikes.

Katara was the first to feel the urge to close the distance.

—"Ren… thank you for saving Suki," she said, briefly touching his forearm. "That meant a lot."

Ren looked at her. And here he applied the final touch: no smile, no pride… a serene, sincere expression.

—"I wouldn't have been able to forgive myself if something had happened to her."

Katara lowered her gaze, affected. Just as Ren had calculated.

Then Aang intervened with his usual sweetness.

—"Hey… why don't you come have breakfast with us? We're all worried about Suki and… you're part of this now."

Ren opened his lips for an instant, as if hesitating out of politeness.

But just as he was about to accept, the door behind him opened a little and a soft voice called out:

—"Ren…"

Suki.

Still weak, still tired… she was calling for him first.

The three from the Avatar team looked at each other, processing the fact that the leader of the Kyoshi Warriors was calling a stranger before them.

Ren seized the silence.

—"You go on," he said softly. "I'll just go see how she is. We'll meet up later."

Katara nodded, not entirely comfortable… but not distrustful either.

Aang smiled at him.

Sokka frowned, but said nothing.

As the hut door closed again behind Ren, Katara murmured:

—"Aang… I think Ren is… a good person."

Aang smiled, trusting.

—"Of course he is. Didn't you see him with Suki?"

Sokka scoffed.

—"I don't know… something about him doesn't sit right with me."

But even Sokka, the most distrustful of the group… was slowly beginning to lower his guard.

And Ren, from inside the hut, heard every word.

A faint smile appeared on his face.

The web continued to spread.

And no one saw it.
