Kai opened his eyes with a groan and the distinct absence of Rami's body heat in their bed.
He had returned home two hours after Kai and Aida, sleeping downstairs with her by the hearth without asking Kai if that was what he actually wanted.
He knew what Rami was doing, giving space, allowing Kai to be angry with him for keeping secrets.
But truly, Kai would have preferred if the infuriating man would just tell him what he was keeping from him and get in the damn bed.
He let out an audible sigh and sat up, groping for the white marble contact rune that Eunos had gifted him for his birthday to stay in touch with his family.
He listened to the recording his father had left the night before: Ely acknowledging that Aida had stayed with Kai and Rami, and wishing them luck for their trip to Sekhet and Mirai - asking Kai to wish her a happy birthday, to be safe, and to stay close to each other.
'Well, I'm trying. This one isn't my fault.'
