Ten months later
Each year, on the day of his birthday, Rameses Hadiyyah felt as though his mind had been transported back in time, to the days of damp, cold walls, crouching inside of a locked closet, with his sister whispering quietly in the dark:
'Won't you smile for me, Ram? You should smile and make a wish.'
At seventeen years old he understood the custom of a birthday wish now.
You were supposed to think of a personal desire before blowing out the candle, something that you truly wanted, something that would make you happy. And it had to be kept secret or it wouldn't happen.
If he could wish for something now, it would be for Kai to stop telling him about the girl that he was currently enamoured by. One of the popular girls from the year above them with long, mahogany hair and wide brown eyes, who was currently ignoring Kai's existence entirely, despite his efforts to hold her attention.
