He stopped at a street corner and looked up. The sky, which had been a brilliant blue when he first arrived in this world, was now bleeding into deep shades of violet and burnt orange. The sun was dipping below the horizon, casting long, stretching shadows across the pavement. The streetlights of Viridian City flickered to life, buzzing softly.
"Fuck," Kian muttered, running a hand through his hair. "It's already evening."
The reality of his situation crashed down on him. He was a transmigrator with a powerful System, a sexy Gardevoir in his pocket, and a grand ambition to conquer the world—but he had forgotten the most basic human necessity: shelter.
He patted his pockets. He had no local currency yet. He hadn't looted the grunts, and he hadn't exactly shaken down Haley for cash—he had taken a much more visceral form of payment from her. That was satisfying for his libido, but it didn't buy a hotel room.
"I can't sleep on a park bench," he grumbled to himself. "Not on my first night. That's not how a protagonist rolls."
He scanned the street, looking for options. His eyes landed on a group of young teenagers—clearly rookie trainers, judging by their oversized backpacks and the nervous, excited energy they radiated. They were walking in a cluster, chatting loudly as they headed toward the city center.
"Man, I'm so glad the League sponsors the first night," one of the boys said, adjusting his cap. "I spent all my allowance on Pokéballs."
"Yeah, the Pokémon Center dorms are a lifesaver," a girl replied. "I heard they even have a hot shower."
Kian's ears perked up. The Pokémon Center. Of course. It was a public service for licensed trainers.
"Jackpot," Kian whispered.
He didn't waste another second. He merged into the flow of traffic, his long strides eating up the distance as he headed toward the red-roofed building he had visited earlier. The prospect of a soft bed and a hot shower—and perhaps another glimpse of Nurse Joy—put a fresh spring in his step.
He jogged up the steps, the automatic doors sliding open to welcome him back.
The lobby was far more crowded than it had been that afternoon. Trainers were everywhere—some nursing injuries, others boasting about their catches, and a large queue forming near the registration desk.
Kian bypassed the line, using his height and broad shoulders to weave through the crowd until he reached the front counter.
Nurse Joy was there, looking slightly more frazzled than before. Her perfect pink hair was still in place, but there was a tightness around her eyes that spoke of a long, chaotic shift. She was typing furiously on her keyboard while a Chansey rushed back and forth with towels.
She looked up as Kian approached, her professional smile straining to stay in place.
"Welcome to the Pokémon Cen—Oh," she paused, recognition flashing in her blue eyes. "It's you. The trainer from earlier. Kian, right?"
"That's me," Kian said, leaning against the counter and flashing her a tired, lopsided grin. "I'm back. But not for healing this time. I heard you guys offer boarding for trainers starting their journey?"
Joy's face fell. The smile dropped completely, replaced by a look of genuine apology.
"Oh, Kian... I am so, so sorry," she sighed, gesturing to the crowded lobby. "We do offer rooms, yes. But with the start of the League season, we've been swamped. The last dormitory bed was claimed about ten minutes ago. We are completely at capacity."
Kian felt his stomach drop. "You're kidding."
"I wish I was," Joy said, looking down at her screen. "Every bunk is full. Even the emergency cots in the hallway are taken. I can give you a list of nearby budget motels, but..."
Kian slumped his shoulders, letting out a long, heavy sigh. He didn't have to fake the exhaustion; his body was genuinely tired. He rubbed the back of his neck, looking down at the floor like a kicked puppy.
"I don't have any money for a motel," Kian lied smoothly. "I... I really messed up today, Joy."
He looked up at her through his lashes, his dark eyes filled with a manufactured vulnerability.
"I was so excited to leave Pallet Town... so eager to start my adventure... I just ran out the door. I walked all the way through Route 1, fought battles, almost got mugged... and I just realized I even forgot my Town Map."
He shook his head, laughing bitterly at himself. "Daisy Oak was supposed to give it to me, but I was in such a rush I didn't even stop to say goodbye. I'm just... I'm a mess. And now I'm going to have to sleep on the pavement outside."
He saw the crack in her armor instantly.
Nurse Joy wasn't just an NPC; she was a caretaker by nature. Her entire existence was defined by empathy and healing. Seeing a handsome, capable-looking man reduced to such a helpless state tugged violently at her heartstrings.
She bit her lip, looking from Kian to the crowded lobby, and then back to Kian.
"You... you forgot your map?" she asked softly.
"And my sense of direction, apparently," Kian joked weakly. "It's fine, Joy. Really. I'll find a tree or something. Gardevoir can keep watch."
He pushed himself off the counter, turning as if to leave.
"Wait!"
Joy's voice cut through the noise of the lobby. Kian stopped, hiding a smirk, and turned back slowly.
Joy was looking around, checking to see if anyone was listening. She leaned over the counter, beckoning him closer. Her cheeks were flushed a delicate pink.
"I... I can't let a trainer sleep on the street," she whispered, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial hush. "Especially not on their first night. It's against my code."
"But you said you were full," Kian whispered back.
" The dorms are full," Joy corrected, her eyes darting to the side. "But... there is one room."
She took a deep breath, her hands fidgeting with the hem of her white apron. "There's the... the night nurse's quarters. My quarters."
Kian's eyebrows shot up. "Your room?"
"It's a single cell," she explained hurriedly, her face burning brighter now. "It's small. There's only one bed. But... it's warm, and it's safe. I have a night shift tonight, so I'll be out here at the desk most of the time anyway. You... you could sleep there."
She looked at him with wide, hopeful eyes, clearly breaking several company regulations. "It's strictly against the rules, Kian. If the League found out, I'd be in trouble. But... you look so tired."
Kian stared at her. It was better than he had planned. Sleeping in the common dorms would have been fine. Sleeping in Nurse Joy's private bedroom? That was an invitation to a whole different kind of adventure.
His expression softened, shifting from the weary traveler to something more intimate. He reached across the counter.
He took her hands in his.
They were soft and warm. Joy gasped slightly at the contact, her breath hitching, but she didn't pull away.
Kian stepped closer, closing the distance until only the counter separated them. He looked deep into her blue eyes, locking his gaze with hers. He squeezed her hands gently, his thumbs brushing over her knuckles.
"Joy," he said, his voice low, vibrating with sincerity and a hint of something darker, something possessive. "You have no idea what that means to me."
He held her gaze, making sure she felt the weight of his gratitude—and the intensity of his attraction.
"I won't cause you any trouble," he promised, his thumb tracing a slow circle on the back of her hand. "I'll be quiet as a mouse. Thank you. Thank you so much."
Joy felt her heart hammering against her ribs. The way he looked at her... it wasn't the way a trainer looked at a nurse. It was the way a man looked at a woman. It made her knees weak.
"I... It's my pleasure, Kian," she breathed out, unable to look away. "Just... come around the back. I'll let you in."
Kian smiled, a genuine, dazzling smile that made Joy's stomach do a flip.
"Lead the way," he said.
As she turned to unlock the security door, Kian watched her go, his eyes tracing the curve of her hips in the white uniform. He had a bed for the night.
