Chapter 20 - The Day After the Echo

Morning came again at Aetherion Academy, but the atmosphere had changed in a way no one could properly explain.

The sky was still blue.

The training grounds were still intact.

Students were still laughing, sparring, eating, living.

But something in the background of reality had shifted.

Like the world was holding its breath without realizing it.

Arios felt it first.

Not as danger.

Not as pressure.

But as a missing rule.

He stood in formation, sword resting in his hand.

And for a moment—

he couldn't tell how far anything was.

Not physically.

Not conceptually.

Distance itself felt… uncertain.

Arios narrowed his eyes slightly.

"…It's getting closer."

Lysera, standing a few meters away, didn't respond immediately.

Her gaze was fixed on nothing.

Then she spoke softly.

"…No."

A pause.

"It's not getting closer."

Her crimson eyes sharpened.

"…It's starting to exist where we are."

That statement alone made Jin Sakamoto turn his head slightly.

For the first time—

his expression wasn't calm.

"…Explain."

Lysera lifted her hand slightly.

A faint pulse of her Soul Bead flickered.

"I cut a thread yesterday."

"But it didn't break."

She paused.

"It adapted."

A silence followed.

Then Jin muttered:

"…So it learned how to reach through resistance."

Arios tightened his grip on his sword.

"…Then it's not observing anymore."

He exhaled once.

"…It's approaching."

And at that exact moment—

something impossible happened.

A leaf fell near Arios.

It stopped mid-air.

Not floating.

Not frozen.

Just—

unplaced in space.

Then it disappeared.

Like it had been removed from the concept of falling entirely.

Far Beyond the Academy —

In the null-space between reality layers—

Noctivar Khaos opened his black book again.

The pages were no longer static.

They were writing themselves faster.

Three interlocked triangles pulsed brighter than before.

The symbol wasn't just a mark anymore.

It was becoming a directional law.

Noctivar stared at it calmly.

"…Distance is collapsing."

A soft smile.

"Good."

He turned a page.

New structure formed.

Reality Index Codex — Operation Update

Subject: Arios Dreamveil

Status: Increasing Resistance to Classification

Trait: Partial Distance Immunity

Result: Direct mapping insufficient

Conclusion: Physical intersection required

Noctivar closed the book.

Slowly.

Carefully.

"…If I can't observe you properly…"

A pause.

"…then I'll just step into your layer."

The air around him folded slightly.

Not teleportation.

Not movement.

Something worse.

He was adjusting existence to include himself elsewhere.

Back at the academy, Jin Sakamoto exhaled slowly.

His eyes sharpened.

"…Everyone stop training."

Instant silence.

Even Borus, Lex, and the others froze.

That alone was rare.

Jin stepped forward.

"…Something is interfering with spatial consistency."

He paused.

"…Not a monster wave."

"…Not a system glitch."

His gaze turned toward Arios and Lysera.

"…Something that treats distance like a suggestion."

Lysera spoke quietly.

"…It's here."

A ripple passed through the air.

Very subtle.

Almost unnoticeable.

But Arios felt it.

Not near him.

Not far from him.

Just—

around him.

Then—

a crack appeared in space.

Not dramatic.

Not explosive.

Just a thin vertical break, like reality forgetting how to stay continuous.

From it—

nothing stepped out yet.

But something breathed through it.

And that breath—

matched Arios' presence perfectly.

Lysera's eyes narrowed instantly.

Her Soul Bead activated fully.

"Judgment Layer: Activate."

A thin field of death-creation authority spread outward.

But instead of targeting an enemy—

it hit the crack.

And for a brief second—

the crack stabilized.

Not closed.

Not destroyed.

Just… delayed.

Lysera clicked her tongue softly.

"…It's resisting conceptual deletion."

Borus whispered from behind:

"…What kind of enemy does that?"

Lex didn't answer.

Even he had stopped joking.

Arios — First Recognition of the Threat

Arios stepped forward slightly.

His system flickered.

SYSTEM NOTICE

"External entity attempting proximity override."

"Warning: Distance rule instability detected."

Arios frowned.

"…So you're here already."

He raised his sword slightly.

Not fully.

Not aggressively.

Just ready.

"…Then show yourself properly."

A pause.

Then—

a voice emerged from the crack.

Not spoken.

Written directly into the air.

"I am already here."

The temperature dropped slightly.

Not physically.

But in perception.

And for the first time—

even Jin took a step forward.

"…Everyone back."

His voice was calm.

But firm.

"…This is not training anymore."

The First Partial Manifestation

The crack widened slightly.

Not into a portal.

Not into a gate.

But into a conceptual overlap.

And something began forming inside it—

not fully visible.

But undeniably present.

A presence that did not arrive.

It simply became shared space.

Arios' eyes narrowed.

"…So you really don't use distance."

Lysera whispered.

"…It's not crossing space."

A pause.

"It's rewriting where space thinks it is."

The presence inside the crack pulsed once.

And then—

the system message in Arios' mind flickered violently.

"Target proximity established."

A pause.

Then a second line appeared:

"No longer observing."

"Now intersecting."

Arios exhaled slowly.

A faint grin formed.

"…Finally."

He raised his sword fully.

White-void aura flickering at the edge of his grip.

"…Then come."

The crack widened another inch.

And from the other side—

Noctivar Khaos took his first step toward the academy layer.

Not through space.

Not through time.

But through the removal of separation itself.

And the moment his presence crossed—

Aetherion Academy stopped being safe in principle.

It had become reachable.
