Blazing flames burst from the mouths of Typhlosion and Charizard.
The two pillars of fire collided in the center of the battlefield.
The flames were evenly matched. Neither side could overpower the other, and neither Pokémon was willing to give in. The moisture in the air began to evaporate rapidly.
A crackling roar spread from the battlefield to everyone's ears.
Both Pokémon continued increasing the intensity of their flames, refusing to back down.
"BOOM!!!"
A thunderous explosion echoed across the stadium.
The violent clash of energy detonated in the middle of the field.
Thick black smoke instantly engulfed the battlefield.
No one could clearly see what was happening inside.
"Charizard, use Hurricane!"
Finding Typhlosion's position in the smoke would have been difficult for most Trainers, but Sam had a simpler solution.
He didn't need to find Typhlosion.
He only needed to attack the entire battlefield.
After receiving Sam's command, Charizard burst out of the smoke and flapped its wings powerfully.
The force of its wings summoned a violent storm.
The wind howled across the arena.
The raging hurricane quickly swept away the smoke and tore across the battlefield.
Even though the smoke had briefly obscured everything, Sam believed the storm would still deal significant damage to Typhlosion.
Seeing the storm sweeping across the field, Lily panicked.
"Typhlosion, use Dig! Hide underground!"
Panic often caused people to make mistakes.
And Lily had just made one.
Using Dig would have been a good idea if Typhlosion had acted before the storm fully formed.
But now the hurricane was already raging across the battlefield and had already struck Typhlosion.
More importantly—
The smoke had been completely blown away.
Typhlosion's attempt to dig underground was immediately spotted by Charizard.
"I've got you. You can't escape."
A faint smile appeared on Sam's face.
"Charizard, Giga Impact!"
As soon as the command was given, Charizard unleashed its full power and charged forward like a blazing meteor.
Typhlosion had exposed its back while digging.
In a battle of this level, exposing your back to the opponent was a fatal mistake.
Charizard slammed into Typhlosion with Giga Impact, sending it crashing directly into the half-dug hole in the ground.
Charizard staggered slightly after the attack.
The recoil from Giga Impact was never pleasant.
But Typhlosion had it far worse.
The referee quickly stepped forward.
"Typhlosion has lost the ability to battle!"
After confirming the result, the referee signaled Lily to send out her final Pokémon.
Lily's expression looked grim.
Typhlosion—her starter Pokémon—had been defeated so easily.
But the worst part was that Typhlosion hadn't lost because it was weaker than Charizard.
It had lost because she had been completely outmaneuvered by Sam's command strategy.
She had been defeated as a Trainer.
Lily took several deep breaths, trying to calm herself.
The cheers from the audience only made things harder. Nearly the entire stadium was shouting for Sam and Charizard.
The pressure was overwhelming.
After a moment, Lily finally regained her composure.
"You're very strong, Sam," she said sincerely.
"If I'm not mistaken, this still isn't your full strength. Can you show me your true power so I can understand the gap between us?"
Sam hadn't expected such a request.
He scratched his head awkwardly.
"I don't mind… but I'm a little worried whether you can handle the shock."
"Don't worry. I'm ready!" Lily replied firmly.
"Alright then."
"Come out, Camerupt!"
"Camerupt has appeared!" the commentator shouted.
"This is probably the first time many viewers have seen this Pokémon. Camerupt isn't from Kanto or Johto—it's a Pokémon native to the Hoenn Region!"
"I never expected Lily to possess a Pokémon from Hoenn!"
The commentator continued excitedly:
"Charizard hasn't lost much stamina from the previous battle. Will Sam keep Charizard in the fight, or will he honor Lily's request and reveal his true strength?"
The audience, commentators, and VIP guests all held their breath.
They were waiting for Sam's decision.
Sam smiled calmly.
"As the main character here, I shouldn't disappoint everyone."
"Then I'll grant your wish. Just don't be too shocked."
"Don't worry," Lily replied confidently.
Sam shrugged slightly.
He hoped Lily would still sound that confident after the battle.
"Come back, Charizard."
This battle had already become more of a demonstration than a serious match.
Since it was a show, it wouldn't be appropriate to send out Tyranitar.
There was one Pokémon in Sam's team far better suited for putting on a performance.
"Come out… Gengar!"
"Hehehehe…"
Gengar appeared with a wide grin.
And the moment it arrived, it delivered a terrifying welcome.
A chilling laugh echoed across the entire stadium.
The eerie voice sounded as if Gengar were standing right behind every spectator.
Many people instinctively turned around in fear.
Suddenly—
The sky darkened.
Ghost-type energy spread across the battlefield, blocking out the sunlight and plunging the arena into darkness.
"Activate the emergency lights!" the staff of the Indigo Plateau Conference shouted immediately.
The arena lights flickered on.
Under the dim emergency lighting, everyone finally saw what had happened.
Gengar floated lazily in the air.
At its feet lay Camerupt, completely unconscious.
The entire audience froze in shock.
Only a few seconds had passed.
No one had even seen Gengar move.
Yet Camerupt had already been defeated.
The commentator swallowed nervously.
"Although we didn't see Gengar attack… I believe everyone here felt its terrifying presence."
"Let's congratulate Sam, who has successfully advanced to the next round!"
"And at the same time… let's observe a moment of silence for Sam's next opponent."
"Because their fate may already be sealed."
