Chapter 83 - Chapter 80

They both frowned at that with Junichiro picking up the thread, "The scabbard would have had to be one of the last things to stored in here, so it should, logically, be on top of the pile right? Yet..." He closed his eyes and focused, "I can't sense anything with the level of strength I would assume the scabbard has."

The pair of them looked at the compass in Mittelt's hand and followed it until it was once more spinning in a circle. Junichiro pulled out a wand and began using it to lift sections of gold coins out of the way. Telekinesis was one of the most useful magical abilities, by far, "I can feel something magical down this way, but it's really not all that strong feeling."

Eventually he lifted out a large chest that the compass pointed directly at and followed as it moved through the air, "Huh."

After setting it down, Junichiro examined the large chest, at least two meters on every side and a meter tall with a very thick lock keeping it sealed, "Well that's interesting. Both the chest itself and the lock feel magical. Recognize anything Mittelt?"

After the petite fallen shook her head, Junichiro pulled out another wand and began to cast diagnostic spells on the chest and lock. Only a fool would just immediately try to open it up.

The diagnostics came back as rather simple magics. The chest was enchanted to hide whatever was inside of it while the lock was only enchanted so it couldn't be picked or broken. Both enchantments were quite old, around a thousand years each. So, if Excalibur's Scabbard was inside, which it should be, then it was placed inside and locked there about a thousand years ago. That's maybe two to three hundred years after it was first stolen from Arthur.

"Well, that might explain why Albion never mentioned the scabbard to his wielders. He might not have known he had it. This chest probably hasn't been opened since it was sealed around a thousand years ago, give or take a century, and the chest blocks anything trying to get out of it. I can only locate the magic on the chest and lock with nothing else registering."

After his explanation, Junichiro pulled out another wand and began casting at the lock. It was a simple, if someone tedious, process to disenchant the lock. Due to its age the locks enchantments were already drastically weakened and only needed a little more work to be completely disenchanted. After that, removing the lock would be easy. And indeed it was, after just a few minutes of work the lock popped open and was removed.

Junichiro flipped open the top of the chest and gasped along with Mittelt as a truly monstrous amount of holy power suddenly flooded out and crashed into them.

It was almost a physical force as it washed over the pair of them bathing them in its pure radiance. If the holy energy had been a physical thing they would have both been blown to the other side of the cave.

It took a minute for the pair of them to catch their breath and become accustomed to the sheer power radiating from within the chest. They both goggled at the contents of the simple looking box. Sitting on top was the item Junichiro had come for, the Scabbard, but it wasn't the only item contained within the chest. There were a plethora of items within the chest, all that he could see glittered as if brand new. Yet he had no eyes for them, he was focused solely on the scabbard.

To all appearances, it was a rather simple looking thing, if extremely well made. It looked to be made of gold with blue and white enamel patterns flowing around it. The pair stared at it for a good few minutes, just marveling at its beauty. Eventually, though, Junichiro finally reached into the chest and gently picked up the Scabbard.

The moment he touched it, he felt it connect to his magical core, binding itself to him. They both stared as the scabbard gave off a gentle golden glow in his hands. Remembering the powers of the Excalibur Fragments, Junichiro sends his desire to the Scabbard and watches in joy as it changes shape and becomes a wrist watch strapped around his left wrist.

Mittelt stares at the watch now adorning Junichiro's wrist with a combination of incredulity, amazement, and fear, "We. Are. So. Fucked."

Junichiro looked at Mittelt after her outburst only to see her looking at him with a blank expression and dull eyes. When she spoke her voice sounded hollow, "You know. I thought you were just fucking around and having a little fun. Granted digging a kilometer into the Earth didn't seem like much fun at first, but the cave is kind of cool. But then..."

Here her expressionless face morphed into a disturbing combination of pissed off and terrified, as if she couldn't decide which emotion took precedence, "But then you had to go and actually find it! That thing is a death sentence for two weaklings like us!" She started to hyperventilate, "We're fine down here, no way anyone can detect anything through a kilometer of solid ground." She stared at Junichiro with tears in the corner of her eyes, "But the moment we leave?! We'll be swarmed by everyone with any kind of supernatural sense! They'll be clamoring for our blood! They'll rip us apart, then rip each other apart until the strongest has that thing in their possession!"

She was panting and practically frothing at the mouth as she screamed, "Oh GOD! You're going to restart the WAR!"

As Mittelt had her meltdown and started rambling about the coming apocalypse, Junichiro stuck his hand into one of the pouches on his utility belt. After digging around for a second, he pulled out a small trinket that didn't look like much more than a small golden ball. As Mittelt continued to rant, he casually hooked the trinket up to the watch. The moment he clicked the clasp of the trinket closed, the overwhelming holy aura of Excalibur's Scabbard vanished as if it had never existed.

Mittelt froze as the powerful aura emitted by the scabbard just disappeared. Her head slowly turned until she was facing Junichiro. Her face was completely blank as she asked in a very flat tone, "What did you do?"
