Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: From me to you, From you to me

"Good morning." Wang Ming greeted his neighbor as he arrived at his desk.

"Good morning." Lin Ling smiled slightly at him.

"So..." Wang Ming looked at Lin Ling seriously. "How was it to cross the line?"

Lin Ling laughed nervously at his question.

"I can say... I learned my lesson."

"I hope... you don't put too much weight on your own shoulders, in the end only you will feel how heavy it is..."

"Thanks for the advice... but someone already told me that I need to take care of myself." Lin Ling smiled calmly as he remembered Cyan's words once again.

"Wait—" Wang Ming now had a slightly surprised look on his face, along with a kind of hopeful gaze. He approached Lin Ling and held his shoulders.

"It was her, wasn't it?"

"What...!?" Lin Ling was alarmed when he realized what he had let slip.

"No—I just remembered that I need to pay attention to myself.

"Okay, I'll pretend to believe you... I'm just glad that someone finally showed up to put you in line," Wang Ming had a slight smug smile on his face.

Lin Ling blushed slightly at his implication.

Damn... I let my guard down...

"Well... I hope you'll introduce me to her someday... For now, I have to get back to another meeting. The strategy and analysis departments never stop..." Wang Ming finished speaking wearily as he walked dejectedly to another of his work tasks.

"Good luck." Lin Ling waved as Wang Ming walked away.

"Lin Ling!"

Lin Ling turned around at his desk when he heard his boss calling him.

"Is there a problem, boss?"

"New requests for edits to the Nice commercial have arrived. I need an update by the end of the day."

"Okay."

Satisfied, the boss left with the same irritated expression as always, probably going to yell at another employee.

Well... I was away for another day, and of course some work would pile up...

Lin Ling let out a dry laugh at the end of that thought.

And Wang Ming still has meetings... at least I could ask him for help...

He then felt his cell phone vibrating. Picking it up, he realized it was a new message from Lucius.

YOU'RE BACK, AREN'T YOU?! GREAT, I NEED THE NEW COMMERCIAL SOON!

"I'm actually surprised it took him so long to text me..."

About that, your commercials will have to wait. I need to focus on other tasks, and the deadlines I set before are still far from due.

COME ON! YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO ME! I NEED YOUR HELP!

Lin Ling sighed as he read the message.

Of course you do...

"I'm sorry, but I've already done a lot by delivering the other commercials so early, I'll do things at my own pace now, you'll have to wait calmly."

A few seconds passed, Lucius saw the message, but didn't reply.

Lin Ling decided it was best not to worry about it.

"Okay..." Lin Ling stretched out a little in his chair. "Let's get started so I can go home on time."

Cyan woke up sitting on the bed, a yawn escaping her as she became more awake.

Did I sleep here...?

Cyan then began to remember the previous day, a slight blush appearing on her face as a result, and she placed both hands over her face in an attempt to hide her embarrassment.

Arghhh... did I cross the line?

She then remembered the moment Lin Ling fell asleep in her lap, and she allowed herself to smile slightly at that specific memory.

It was the first time I saw him so calm... I was able to help him...

Breathing deeply and calmly, she began to calm down and accept what she had done before.

I hadn't slept here... he really put me to sleep in his place...

Cyan turned to sit on the edge of the bed.

There's nothing I can do about that side of him... at least I hope he takes working less seriously—

Stepping on the floor to get up for another day, she felt she had stepped on something different.

What?

Picking up what was on the floor, she was curious about what it was exactly.

A scratch card...!?

A few hours later.

"Finally..." He leaned back in his chair after finishing editing the Nice commercial.

Although Treeman will be asking for more soon, for now, I'll consider this a victory...

A few seconds passed as he stared into space.

I think it's a good time for a break... I haven't been on Fomo in a while, and the couple of the month commercial is already on the air, so I can check out people's reactions.

Logging onto social media on his own laptop, Lin Ling was surprised by how people were reacting to the commercial.

Have you seen the new commercial for Nice and Moon!? It's perfect! Pure school love, wow, I couldn't stop smiling.

I wonder if Nice and Moon were ever classmates? And did they meet again as heroes? I could say it's fate delivering perfection.

I just wish Nice's smile was... how can I say less scary... sometimes I get the impression that he's not really smiling.

#nice #moon #perfectcouple

"Oh... wow..." Lin Ling let out his surprise, the fans were really loving the new commercial.

But I have to agree, Nice's smile is kind of scary sometimes... but I'm glad the commercial turned out romantic enough.

"If this tactic works, you could say that you and your girlfriend... are the perfect couple."

Lin Ling brought a hand to his face in embarrassment as he remembered Wang Ming's words.

Damn... I did that based on that night between me and Cyan... but that doesn't mean we're a couple!

Suppressing a groan of frustration, he decided to randomly browse for anything interesting on social media in an attempt to forget his recent thoughts.

Fomo really doesn't change much, even if I stay away for a few days—

Lin Ling's thoughts were interrupted when he came across comments about the #whatisyourcolor movement.

I'm afraid Lucky Cyan won't be coming back... even though it's better for her to rest, I'll miss her shows...

It's not just you, many fans are already protesting against DOS, demanding answers, and soon higher-ranked heroes will be promoting themselves with music. I'm glad we have more music, but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth when it happens.

What?

Opening the video of the comment, Lin Ling could see how people were already protesting against DOS.

At this rate, they won't be able to stay silent forever... what would Cyan do if she saw this?

Lin Ling decided to look at a few more comments to better understand how people were reacting.

That's no big deal, it's time for other heroes to show that side of themselves, and after all, if Lucky Cyan retires, she'll definitely be fine, she's had a successful career.

That's not the point! It all started when Lucky Cyan stepped away at a bad time! Many are taking advantage of someone's bad moment to climb to the top.

Remember the truth! @bigweb7766

Please! It's always been like this, heroes compete for ranks all day long, Lucky Cyan is just another one in this story, she's no different from the others, are you the type who believes that her luck doesn't bring anything negative to others? If someone wins, someone has to lose, it's simple. She was certainly happy being at the top with her luck, a classic selfishness of being a hero. And if she's really good, she'll come back without anyone's trust, or maybe this story of her being kind and talented is just a false image of her.

#whatisyourcolor

That idiot...

Lin Ling didn't like that comment; this guy was making absurd assumptions about Cyan.

In response, Lin Ling started typing on his laptop.

Moon is the best! @Moonthegoddess

You're a complete idiot for thinking that. Cyan isn't like that! She's strong, kind, and above all, a great heroine. She's also someone who knows how to appreciate the little things in life. She doesn't care about not being at the top; she exhausted herself trying to carry everyone's expectations on her back.

You can say that she got where she is thanks to luck, but luck is nothing without her own effort, and say what you want, but in the end, we are the ones who are lucky to have someone like her!

#luckycyan

Lin Ling walked away satisfied with that answer. He won't put up with these people spreading slander about Cyan.

Lin Ling then realized that the guy had already replied to him.

Wow... sorry, man... I didn't imagine that someone who is such a fan of the heroine Moon would react like this about another heroine... in fact, it seems like you know her personally...

#whatisyourcolor

Lin Ling turned pale when he read that comment, and quickly deleted his own comment for fear of further implications.

Shit... I'm an idiot...

He let his head fall onto the table after his mistake.

Things are escalating... maybe Cyan won't be able to keep hiding like this... I hope she can at least get some more rest.

Lin Ling needed a drink to calm down, he got up and approached a water cooler that was leaning against one of the walls.

Suddenly he felt his cell phone vibrating, picking up the phone he sighed when he saw who it was.

Lucius...

ARE YOU SURE ABOUT THIS DECISION?

Is he threatening me? I deserve it...

If you're not satisfied, find someone else for the commercials.

Lucius saw the message, but didn't reply.

I'm just asking him to calm down, is that so difficult?-

*RING*RING*

Now Lucius was calling Lin Ling.

This has to be a joke...

Lin Ling let out a slight irritated expression on his face as he answered the call.

"Listen here, Lucius—"

"I'm honored that you answered..."

Lin Ling's eyes widened when he heard his voice. It wasn't just on the phone, he was nearby. Lin Ling turned in the direction he heard the voice and found Lucius standing next to him with a small smile.

"Lin Ling."

"Lucius!? Why are you here!?"

"Well... I came to see for myself how you were doing after all. Yesterday, when I showed up, I was told that you were sick." Lucius began to approach Lin Ling slowly. "Even when I sent you a message yesterday, you didn't reply... I was worried... then when you finally replied, you treated me so coldly..." Lucius spoke in a sad tone, but Lin Ling could sense a subtle venom in his voice.

Lucius stopped beside Lin Ling, maintaining his usual smile.

"You know... that's no way for a hero to treat someone who needs help." Lucius took a few steps forward, passing Lin Ling and leaving him behind. "And you say you're going to be a hero." Lucius finished speaking mockingly.

Lin Ling turned back to Lucius with an angry expression.

"You talk as if you were a great example of a hero, but all you do is put yourself above others!"

"Well, why shouldn't I?" Lucius approached again, now stopping in front of Lin Ling. "Look at the difference between us. I am the hero, and you... are an ordinary person. Your existence serves to make people realize who is truly special."

Lin Ling clenched his fists in response.

"Anyone... can become a hero... even someone like me!"

Lucius laughed loudly at these words, which caught the attention of some employees.

"Do you really believe that? THEN TELL ME!"

Lucius grabbed Lin Ling's wrist tightly, lifting it up to the height of both their faces.

"WHAT NUMBER DO YOU HAVE HERE?" Lucius had an insane look on his face.

Lin Ling shuddered as he felt the grip on his wrist tighten.

"COME ON! AFTER ALL, THAT'S WHAT DEFINES WHO CAN BE A HERO! FOR YOU TO BELIEVE THESE WORDS, YOUR NUMBER MUST BE HIGH, RIGHT?"

Lin Ling looked at his own wrist, the number remained the same as it had been his entire life, 01. His grandmother had always been his supporter, always seeing him as someone who could be a hero.

I don't even remember the last time I looked at the number...

Lucius let go of Lin Ling's wrist. The silence that followed meant he was right. He didn't even bother to hide his victorious smile.

Lucius then wrapped an arm around Lin Ling's neck as he leaned in and whispered calmly in his ear.

"You're a lucky man, aren't you? After all, you have Lucky Cyan."

Lin Ling's eyes trembled when he heard these words, and he couldn't hear anything else around him.

Lucius's eyes flashed maliciously when he saw his reaction.

I must be worrying too much...

Cyan walked through the corridors of the ToadMan building, wearing the same clothes she wore the last time she visited this place. In one hand she carried a bag with something in it, and in the other she looked at the scratch card from before with a thoughtful look.

But I ended up coming here...

She sighed in exasperation with herself.

I hope I don't cause him any trouble at least...

She stopped abruptly when she reached the part of the building where Lin Ling worked. There was a crowd of people gathering in one part of the place.

"What?"

"Don't be too surprised, I've always been very observant and I have my contacts... your life must be really sad if that's the best result her luck can bring you, I'd be ashamed to be you."

Lin Ling trembled at his words, unable to say anything.

"Lucky Cyan must feel awful having to rely on you, it's such a waste of luck... Ah! I know... give her to me, I'll use her much better than you."

Lin Ling felt something snap inside himself.

Use her...

Lucius took a few steps back, satisfied.

"You know this is the best thing to do. I can help her better than you ever could..."

Lin Ling clenched his fists tightly.

Use her...

"I will truly help her, I will guide her to the true path of a hero..."

Lin Ling's shoulders trembled.

Use her...

"Then let the hero do the work that only a hero can do—

Cyan, who had managed to squeeze her way through the crowd, clenched her fists tightly at what she was seeing. She took a step forward in anger, but then her eyes widened at the next scene.

BAM!

"Arghh!" Lucius exclaimed when he felt a strong impact hitting his face. He took a few steps back until he hit his back against the water cooler, knocking it over and falling on his butt on the floor while the fallen water cooler spread water all over the floor around him.

He brought his hand to his nose when he felt it tingling. Looking up, he found Lin Ling with his right fist extended, his knuckles purple.

Lin Ling was breathing heavily with his eyes closed.

"Need help?

The day they met.

"I was just tired... tired of the life of a heroine..."

The truth about why she ran away.

"I felt happy living in pursuit of small things."

The kind of happiness he understood very well.

"It's not fair that I stay here while you do everything."

Someone who, even at their worst, is willing to help someone else.

"You're someone I'd like to have by my side every day here. That would be special to me."

Someone who finds your presence special in itself.

"It was to help my friend, so it doesn't matter."

What's important is helping a friend.

"You should have realized by now who's the strongest here."

He never thought he would have someone like that by his side.

All these memories from the last few weeks he had spent with Cyan were racing through his mind.

"Bastard..." Lin Ling let out a growl as he spoke.

"Don't you ever dare mention her again... she's the most incredible person I've ever met..." Lin Ling opened his eyes, a dangerous gleam in them, but with a spark of determination shining through.

"If it's for her... I DON'T NEED TO BE A HERO TO PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE!"

Lucius' eyes widened as they trembled violently upon hearing these words.

He lowered his head, and a few seconds passed before he began to laugh wildly as he ran his hand through his hair.

Everyone in the room fell silent at his actions.

"Well, well..." Lucius began to stand up. "I have to admit... you have courage, but do you know what happens to those who have courage but don't have the strength to match that courage?" Lucius looked directly at Lin Ling, his eyes shining with anger. It was remarkable how normal his nose looked; it seemed that Lin Ling's punch had caused him no harm.

"You will learn..." Lucius took a step forward, water splashing with this action. "Once and for all, what is a true hero—AH!"

CLATTER!

Lucius' metal boots made him slip on the water on the floor, and he fell face first with an audible thud.

A silence stretched out until he began to get up again.

"You'll learn- !"

CLATTER!

He fell again as he tried to take another step.

He got up quietly this time and...

CLATTER!

Another attempt.

CLATTER!

Another fall.

"Pffffft—" someone in the crowd burst out laughing at the scene.

CLATTER!

Lucius fell again.

Other people started laughing.

CLATTER!

Another fall.

Now most of the crowd was laughing at the hero in this scene, some people were recording it on their cell phones.

Lin Ling watched the scene with a lost look on his face, he expected everything but this.

CLATTER!

On the 7th fall, Lucius looked up from the ground at Lin Ling.

His face was flushed with anger and shame, clearly visible to all.

The crowd continued to laugh carelessly at him.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON HERE?!".

Suddenly, everyone fell silent when they heard the voice they all knew.

Mr. Cheng was at the back of the crowd, Wang Ming accompanying him.

The crowd made room for them both to reach the center of the chaos.

"Lin Ling!?" Wang Ming exclaimed when he saw the state of one of the people causing this chaos, and approached him with concern.

"What happened!?"

Lin Ling shuddered slightly, the gravity of the situation finally hitting him.

Mr. Cheng watched the situation closely.

"It was nothing..." Lucius stood up again as he spoke. "I'm just teaching your employee some manners."

"Really?" Mr. Cheng looked Lucius in the eye.

"All I see is a stupid hero who caused chaos and damage to my building." Mr. Cheng spoke calmly and coldly.

Lucius gritted his teeth when he heard these words.

"You frog face... DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO YOU'RE TALKING TO!?"

"A new type of clown?"

"AS SOON AS I TALK TO MY AGENCY—"

"Your agency, in case you lied earlier about not being in one just to use our autonomous order system, don't worry, they'll find out..." Mr. Cheng glanced at the crowd, and the people who were recording quickly put away their cell phones.

"Who do you think people are going to believe!?"

"You're telling the story of an ordinary person who hit a hero? What a shameful story for the hero..."

Lucius trembled as he realized what he was saying.

"Get out of this building and never come back." Mr. Cheng spoke harshly, no longer patient with this nuisance.

Lucius walked calmly away, passing through the crowd and disappearing down the hallways.

Silence fell once again.

"WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR!? GET BACK TO WORK!!"

The crowd began to disperse, many alarmed by their boss's words.

Cyan kept her head down as she stood still with one hand on her face, hiding a silly smile she couldn't wipe off her face.

"If it's because of her... I DON'T NEED TO BE A HERO TO PUNCH YOU IN THE FACE!"

She raised her head, now looking directly at Lin Ling, who was being lectured by the boss himself.

You really...

She began to approach him, a calm expression now displayed on her face.

You don't think you're a hero?

Meanwhile, no one knew, but on Lin Ling's wrist, the numbers that hadn't changed in years began to move.

01 ---> 02

YOU ARE REALLY LUCKY, LIN LING! OTHERWISE, I WOULD FIRE YOU RIGHT NOW!

Mr. Cheng yelled at his employee as he always did.

But this time Lin Ling wasn't listening; he was focused on how much his hand hurt at that moment.

"Boss, better leave that for later." Wang Ming interrupted the one-sided conversation between boss and employee. "He's hurt."

"Okay, take him to the third office down the hall, it's empty and there's a first aid kit there."

"That room isn't..." Lin Ling began to ask.

"She was fired this morning..."

"Excuse me..."

The three turned to the new voice they heard, Lin Ling's eyes widened when he saw who it was.

"Can I take care of him? I have to talk to him too..."

"Are you...?" Wang Ming asked curiously.

"Cynthia..."

"Oh Cynthia, you must have come to visit him..." Mr. Cheng now spoke in an alarmed tone. "I apologize for the inconvenience."

Wang Ming's eyes widened slightly at what he had just heard.

Is it her!?

"It's okay... just let me help him for now."

Cyan approached and grabbed Lin Ling's left arm as she led him to the room they had mentioned.

Both of them were now in the office, and a silence stretched out.

Lin Ling was sitting on a sofa while Cyan rummaged through the cabinet for the first aid kit.

Lin Ling tried to say something but couldn't.

"So..." Cyan approached with the first aid kit and sat down on a chair in front of him.

"When you said you were going to say no to him, was that what you had planned?" She asked him calmly.

"...No... it's just... I couldn't stay calm with what he was saying."

"I see..." Cyan let a small smile appear.

Cyan gently took his hand and began to wipe it clean.

Lin Ling flinched in pain.

"...How much did you hear?" Lin Ling asked hesitantly.

"Not much... but enough to know how much of an idiot he is."

Lin Ling nodded weakly.

"Do you think you did the wrong thing?" Cyan asked, noticing how distressed he looked.

"No... I just wanted to shut him up, make him stop talking about you like that... I just... I'm still confused about how to act."

Cyan laughed softly at his words.

"Well... I always prefer dialogue, but I'm grateful to you, and don't worry about how you acted, after all, you yourself said you don't have to be a hero to punch him... you acted like yourself and that's what matters."

Cyan finished by wrapping a cold compress around Lin Ling's hand.

"Thank you..." Lin Ling thanked her for her help.

"But why are you here?" Lin Ling asked, now curious.

"Well..." Cyan looked a little alarmed after that question.

She reached into her pants pocket with one hand and pulled something out.

"I found this at home..."

Lin Ling's eyes widened when she saw what she was holding.

I didn't throw it away!?

Cyan held the scratch card with a strange look on her face.

"I-I can explain... I—"

"Did you think you could use my luck?" Cyan asked him directly.

Lin Ling fell silent as he lowered his head and clenched his free fist tightly.

"...Yes... I was tired, I wanted everything to end quickly, and then I saw this and thought your luck could solve it, but when I realized what I was doing, I thought I could solve it just by throwing it away... but in the end, that doesn't change the fact that I chose to use you..." Lin Ling confessed calmly.

Cyan was silent after hearing these words, and Lin Ling only became more distressed as she said nothing.

"You know... the first thing I decided to do when I was homeless was exactly that, to use my luck for my own benefit..." Cyan began to speak as she stared at the scratch card.

"I wanted so badly to be just a normal person, but at the first opportunity, I used the power I hated so much for my own benefit..." She let out a slight dry laugh at the end of this confession.

"Those are different situations. I had other choices, but you were in the worst situation... you had that right." Lin Ling expressed a little distress.

"Really?" Cyan now looked directly at him.

"I was disappointed that I wasn't lucky anymore... I felt weak... I could only continue because I realized that I still had something to do for myself and for those I cared about."

Memories of when Cyan used to sing on the street flashed through her mind.

"Is that so different between us?" Cyan asked, looking into his eyes.

"I don't know..." Lin Ling replied honestly.

Cyan began to take something else out of her pants pocket.

"I found this on the way here." She held up a coin typical of City X in her hand.

"I'm still lucky..." Cyan glanced at her wrist, the numbers rising and falling incessantly, impossible to tell what the exact number was.

"I'm still Lucky Cyan, even after that day."

Memories of that rainy night flooded her mind.

"That night, I also threw myself at the mercy of my luck. Finding you and these last few days... my luck has been involved. I can no longer ignore it."

"We know that's not true... come on... you're telling me that was the best your luck could do..." Lin Ling was convinced of it.

"Then..." Cyan brought the coin closer to the scratch card. "Why don't we test it now?"

Lin Ling's eyes widened at this action.

"Wait. This—are you really going to do it?"

"I don't care... you said you wanted to say that you did everything in your power to help me... I want to do the same."

Lin Ling looked at her silently, he had no answer for that.

Cyan accepted this silence and began to scratch the scratch card.

Congratulations...

The first part of the scratch card appeared.

You won...

The second part appeared.

Both of them were excited to see what would appear in the last part.

Congratulations, you have won a 40% discount on Lucky Cyan products.

Cyan and Lin Ling blinked silently at this result.

Cyan looked at her own wrist again. She couldn't tell what the number was, but she was still in 7th place in the rankings, so her number was definitely high.

"These things..." She held up the scratch card with a slightly irritated expression, one eyebrow raised. "They're a scam."

Lin Ling looked at this scene for a few seconds and then...

"Pfffft—"

He let out a loud laugh.

Cyan looked at him with an indignant expression.

"That's not funny..."

"No—it's just that—" Lin Ling began to calm down, gradually stopping laughing.

"...We can say... that this is the best result your luck brings." Lin Ling said with a sincere smile.

Cyan calmly processed the words, then let out a sigh, but a slight smile appeared on her face.

"You're an idiot."

"An idiot that your luck chose." Lin Ling now had a smug smile on his face.

Cyan rolled her eyes at his words.

"Right... there's something else I want to ask, what's that?" Lin Ling pointed to the bag Cyan had left on the floor next to the chair.

"Ah..." Cyan felt a slight blush of embarrassment rise to her face.

"I-I..." She picked up the bag awkwardly.

"I thought it would be polite to bring something in return for visit, so I made these..." Cyan took what appeared to be a package of cookies out of the bag, but to Lin Ling, they looked a little different from cookies, their shapes were strange.

"I should have expected this from you..."

Taking one of the cookies, Lin Ling could see that they really were strange and even crumbly.

Eating one, he could feel Cyan looking at him expectantly.

"Oh... it's good!"

"Really!?" Cyan asked in surprise.

Lin Ling nodded in confirmation.

"My grandmother always made things like this, so I have a standard for saying it's good." Lin Ling finished saying as he took another cookie.

Cyan smiled when she heard that, the hours spent trying to get the recipe right were worth it.

Suddenly, a knock could be heard at the door.

They both looked curiously.

"Come in."

The door opened, revealing Wang Ming.

"Good, you two are still here."

He approached them with a small smile.

"Cynthia, it's a pleasure to meet you!"

"Are you?" She asked, confused about him.

"Ah! Yes, I'm Wang Ming, Lin Ling's supervisor and coworker."

Cyan looked at Lin Ling, and he nodded, confirming Wang Ming's words.

Cyan stood up and extended her hand to Wang Ming in greeting.

"It's a pleasure to meet you."

"The pleasure is mine..." Wang Ming accepted the greeting. "I'm glad that stubborn guy finally has someone to keep him in line."

Lin Ling looked at Wang Ming with a hint of indignation.

"Thank you... I'm really glad I can help him be less stubborn, he really needs help in that regard."

Lin Ling looked surprised at Cyan's words, at least he thought she would defend him, even though he knew it was true.

"Isn't that right? He always finds a way to get himself into unnecessary trouble, I'm counting on you to keep him in line." Wang Ming flashed an amused smile.

"Sure, you can count on me to help him."

"Hey, I'm here." Lin Ling said, a little offended.

Cyan let out a giggle when she heard him speak.

"Right... now on another note, you're crazy Lin Ling, punching a hero like Lucius..." Wang Ming now looked at Lin Ling.

"I don't regret it."

"Okay... but you're really lucky lately, all that overtime allowed the boss to give you the weekend off, of course a big part of that came from today's incident."

Lin Ling's eyes widened slightly in response.

Cyan smiled at that, he could rest more this way.

"But I was thinking..." Wang Ming began to speak calmly. "I'm also off this weekend... so how about coming with my family on a little trip during the break?"

"Huh? "Huh?"
